A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Korábbi kutatásaim témája, amelyet doktori értekezésemben összegeztem, a „tetszhalott lány” motívumának vizsgálata volt a középkori francia és okszitán elbeszélésekben. Doktori értekezésemben az ismert regény- és mesemotívum kialakulásának és sajátosságainak feltárásán túl arra is rávilágítottam, hogy a görög/bizánci regények minden bizonnyal már a 12. században is ismertek voltak a francia szerzők számára, s hatásukkal a francia udvari regény születésénél is fontos tényezőként kell számolnunk. A posztdoktori kutatás során a korábbi eredmények kiszélesítésével a bizánci regények 12. századi francia recepcióját tervezem vizsgálni, a disszertációmban már kidolgozott elvek alapján, kimutatva a jellegzetes görög/bizánci regénymotívumok továbbélését egyes francia művekben, a lexikai, formai, strukturális és jelentésbeli eltérések feltárásával. Kutatásaimban ugyanakkor a feltételezhető bizánci hatás történeti hátterét is szeretném feltárni, amelyben a francia-magyar-bizánci dinasztikus kapcsolatoknak köszönhetően egyrészt fontos szerepe lehetett a magyar „közvetítésnek”, másrészt a magyar-bizánci vonatkozások egyes francia művekkel kapcsolatban is szolgálhatnak új eredményekkel.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.

A bizánci regények középkori francia recepciója kevéssé kutatott terület.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

Ezen kívül a tervezett motívumindex elkészítése a további kutatásokhoz értékes segédanyagként szolgálhat, amennyiben a későbbiek folyamán átültethető más corpus-okra is. A kutatások ily módon az európai udvari irodalmak párbeszédének vonatkozásában is tovább szélesíthetők, azon folyamatok vizsgálatával, amelyek a motívumok fejlődése, változásai alapján kirajzolódnak. A szervezésemben működő Udvari Irodalom Nemzetközi Társaság magyar tagozatának munkáján belül összehangolt kutatásokra is lehetőség nyílna a jövőben. A magyar vonatkozások feltárása révén nemzeti örökségünk bővítésének tekintetében is fontos eredmények születhetnek. Összességében a kutatás a regény műfajának nyugati fejlődésében olyan összefüggéseket tárhat fel, amely a regényirodalom árnyaltabb, a modern irodalomelméleti módszerek eredményeit kiegészítő értelmezését szolgálja.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Kutatásaimban ugyanakkor a feltételezhető bizánci hatás történeti hátterét is szeretném feltárni, amelyben a francia-magyar-bizánci dinasztikus kapcsolatoknak fontos szerepe lehetett.
Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The topic of the research I have carried out so far and summarized in my PhD dissertation was the analysis of the motif of the “dead-alive girl” (« la morte vivante ») in the medieval French and Occitan narratives. Apart from exploring the characteristics and development of the well-known motif appearing in romances and tales, in my dissertation I also managed to reveal that with all probability the Greek/Byzantine novels were already known to the French authors in the 12th century, and perhaps it is no exaggeration to state that their influence has to be considered in connection with the birth of the French courtly romance. Within the postdoctoral research project, through the extension of my previous results I intend to study the 12th-century French reception of the Byzantine romance on the basis of the principles already established in my PhD dissertation, through revealing the survival of the characteristic motifs of the Greek/Byzantine romance in certain French works with the examination of the lexical, formal, structural and semantic differences. At the same time, I also intend to map the historical background of the presumed Byzantine influence in which the Hungarian “mediation” had an important role through the French-Hungarian-Byzantine dynastic relations and the Hungarian-Byzantine connections might as well provide us with new results about the single French works.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The medieval French reception of the Byzantine novels is a less researched field. On one hand, the genre of the Byzantine novel, or to be more precise, the four extant novels have become available for the researchers only in the past few decades. These works were earlier regarded as simple imitations of the Hellenistic novels, and therefore were not researched. In connection with the French-Byzantine literary relation, the question has only been asked in a “reversed way” so far – i.e. whether the French romance had an effect on the Byzantine novel and to what extent. During my previous research work, beyond the exploration of the literary parallels, I attempted to emphasize those historical data which can also establish connection between the Byzantine and French romances. However, in accordance with my postdoctoral research plan, we can reveal new and even more interesting connections, if I study the historical and literary questions in relation to the French-Hungarian-Byzantine dynastic relationships which became closer in the 12th century. The relevance of the problem is also indicated by the fact that in the literature of the medieval French romance the questions emerge more and more often how to categorize those medieval French love and adventure romances which do not fit the characteristic categories of the “courtly romances” and what kind of antecedents they could have. I am convinced that we can find an answer to these questions in my research work, because these works mediate the characteristic features of the Greek/Byzantine novels.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

As the planned result of the research which will become available in a series of publications (conference presentations and studies), I would be able to reveal so far unknown aspects of the French medieval literature of romances, which could modify not only our picture of the courtly romance, but in a wider sense also our present knowledge about the beginnings of the European novel and the circumstances of its development. Besides, the compilation of the planned motif index can prove to be a valuable auxiliary material for further research since it can be applied to different corpora. In this way the research can be extended also from the viewpoint of the dialogues of the European courtly literatures by the study of those processes which become visible through the development and changes of the motifs. The Hungarian branch of the International Courtly Literature Society under my organization would also have the possibility to carry out related research projects in the future. Through the exploration of the Hungarian relevance of the topic, important results can be expected also from the viewpoint of our national heritage. All in all, the research can reveal correlations in the Western development of the genre of the novel which would contribute to a more elaborated interpretation of the genre complementing the results offered by the methods of the modern literary theory.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

In the postdoctoral research project I plan to study the 12th-century French reception of the Byzantine novels with the examination of the works in the French medieval literature that show Byzantine influences: primarily through collecting and analysing works which have Greek/Byzantine topics or exhibit the characteristics of the Hellenistic romances and which did not fit the category of the so-called “courtly romances” due to their different nature. At the same time, I also intend to map the historical background of the presumed Byzantine influence in which the French-Hungarian-Byzantine dynastic relations could have had an important role.

Final report

Results in Hungarian
A kutatás 2 éve alatt a bizánci regények 12. századi francia recepcióját vizsgáltam, azon görög/bizánci témájú, vagy a hellénisztikus kori regények sajátosságait követő művek elemzésével, amelyek eltérő jellegük miatt ezidáig nem illeszkedtek a francia irodalomtörténeti osztályozáshoz. Vizsgáltam a francia-magyar-bizánci dinasztikus és irodalmi kapcsolatokat, különös tekintettel III. Béla francia művekben megjelenő alakjára. Kutatásaim során kimutattam, hogy a középkori francia elbeszélésekben fellelhető magyar vonatkozású irodalmi motívumok egyre szélesebb körű és árnyaltabb alkalmazásában Béla-Alexiosz személye és bizánci-magyar uralkodói pályafutása jelentős hatással lehetett. A kutató munka során megkezdtem az Athosz-hegyi Iviron 463-as jelzetű bizánci kódex görög és ófrancia szövegének átírását és kiadásra való előkészítését. A 11. századi görög kézirat főszövege a Barlám és Jozafát című regényes legenda rövidített, ógörög nyelvű változata. A kézirat legfőbb érdekessége, hogy a görög szöveg mellett – és körül – a margón (valamennyi ránk maradt 135 foliumon) napjainkig érdemben nem kutatott, ismeretlen és kiadatlan, valószínűsíthetően igen korai (12. századi) ófrancia fordítást tartalmaz. A kutatás az ófrancia filológia szempontjából rendkívüli jelentőségű, mert ebből a korból igen kevés eredeti írásos emlék maradt ránk.
Results in English
Over the 2 years of my research, I investigated the 12th-century French reception of Byzantine novels, analysing such works following the themes of Greek/Byzantine or Hellenistic novels that had not been integrated into the classification of French literary history due to their peculiar character. I mapped the French–Hungarian–Byzantine dynastic and literary relations, with particular regard to the figure of Béla III appearing in French literary works. My examination demonstrated that the person of Béla-Alexios and his career as a Byzantine-Hungarian ruler may have had a significant effect on the ever broader and more nuanced application of literary motifs with a Hungarian bearing. As part of my investigation, I commenced the transcription of the Greek and Old French texts of the Byzantine codex Mount Athos: Iviron 463. The main text of the 11th-century Greek manuscript is an abridged version of the romance legend Barlaam and Josaphat in Ancient Greek. The chief interest concerning the manuscript lies in the fact that next to – and around – the Greek text, on the margins, all through the 135 folios, it includes a presumably very old translation in Old French (probably from the 12th century), which has not been substantially researched, nor known or published, up until the present day. This research is of extraordinary importance in terms of Old French philology as very few original written remains are extant from this period.
