A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A tervezett kutatás a brigetiói legiótábor, katonaváros és tágabb környezetének komplex vizsgálata elsősorban nem romboló régészeti módszerek segítségével. A beépítetlen területeken végzett korábbi légifotók és régészeti kutatások alapján a legiótábor és a katonaváros eddig teljesen ismeretlen belső szerkezetének vizsgálata nagyon jó eredményeket ígér, ez a további légirégészeti kutatások mellett geofizikai vizsgálatok, terepbejárások és kis felületű szondázások segítségével vihető végbe. Az utcarendszer, lakónegyedek és nem lakó jellegű objektumok azonosítása, jellemző épülettípusok, építészeti módok meghatározása mellett a táborból kivezető utak szerkezetének és vonalvezetésének vizsgálata, valamint a Tatáról Brigetióba vezető vízvezeték pontos vonalának rekonstruálása is a kutatás fontos célja. A Brigetio területén végzett régi ásatások dokumentációjának, leletanyagának feldolgozása is nagyban elősegíti munkánkat. A területtől délre található óholocén Duna-medrek talajfúrásokkal történő kutatása és keltezése fontos kérdésekre adhat választ az egykori város topográfiai helyzetével és környezeti adottságaival kapcsolatban. A projekt további célkitűzése az eddig nem ismert esetleges késővaskori települések lokalizálása Brigetio környezetében. A rombolásmentes régészeti módszerekkel való kutatás jól illeszkedik a magyarországi limes világörökségi helyszínné válását célzó folyamatba, aminek Brigetio az egyik kulcsfontosságú helyszíne.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

A belső struktúrák vizsgálata mellett fontos probléma a katonaváros kiterjedésének lehető legpontosabb lehatárolása.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A projekt számos, a későbbi kutatások számára is fontos eredményt hozhat egyrészt Brigetio római korával kapcsolatban, másrészt a vizsgálati módszerek más helyen történő alkalmazhatóságának szempontjából. Az előzetes kutatások alapján valószínűsíthető a tábor és a canabae szerkezetének, utcahálózatának, épületeinek megismerése. Ezáltal a későbbi, tervezett kutatás számára relevánsabb területek kiválaszthatóakká válnak. Lehetővé válik a pusztulás szempontjából legveszélyeztetettebb területek kiválasztása, illetve a modern város terjeszkedése, fejlődése esetére támpontul szolgál. A vizsgált területről pontos térkép és jól használható térképészeti adatok fognak rendelkezésre állni. Lehetővé válik az egyes módszerek kontrollja, eredményeik összevetése, ezáltal a további kutatások során hatékonyságuk növelése. A brigetiói katonaváros szerkezetének kutatása nemcsak hazai, hanem európai viszonylatban is kimagasló jelentőségű eredményeket hozhat. A környező késővaskori, illetve római kori településrendszer megismerése nemcsak a római kori háttér-települések rendszerének, az utaknak és szerencsés esetben a vízvezetékrendszer azonosításának lehetőségét hordozza, hanem az előzmények megértését. Utóbbi alapjául szolgálhat a kelta nyelvű boiusokat és eraviscusokat elválasztó pannon (illyr) nyelvű azalusok későbbi pontos topográfiai azonosítását célzó kísérleteknek is.
Brigetio a magyarországi limes világörökségi helyszínné válását célzó folyamat egyik kulcsfontosságú helyszíne, a folyamat sikere esetén a tábor és a katonaváros területén végzett kutatások eredményei fontos részét fogják képezni a nagyközönség számára elkészítendő háttéranyagoknak.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The planned research is the comprehensive investigation of the legionary fortress and canabae of Brigetio, primarily by non-destructive methods. Based on the results of recent aerial photography and archaeological research, the investigation of the so far completely unknown inner structure of the legionary fortress and canabae could produce very promising results, which could be achieved by geophisical measuring, fieldwalking, small-scale trial excavations, and the use of further aerial photography. Besides he identification of the street-plan, residential quarters and non-residential areas, and defining the characteristic building types and architectural styles, one of the main aims of the research is investigating the structure and alignment of the outgoing roads from the legionary fortress and localizing the traces of the aquaeductus leading from Tata to Brigetio. Processing and evaluating the documentation and find material of old excavations in Brigetio are also of importance. Research by ground drilling in the Early Holocene riverbeds of Danube south to the canabae will help understanding the topographical situation and the environmental circumstances of the ancient settlement. Another main aim of the project is localizing the Late Iron Age settlements in the region surrounding Brigetio. The use of non-destructive methods suits well in the process aiming to declare the Hungarian Danube Limes as a World Heritage Site, with Brigetio as one of the key places.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

A coherent part of the territory of the legionary fortress and canabae in Brigetio is situated on an unbuilt plot, which is a rare circumstance in the Roman Empire. However, our data concerning this territory are based on rescue excavations, while the modern, non-destructive methods played little or no role in the earlier research. The research was concentrated mainly on the civilian settlement by planned excavations, the territory of the legionary fortress and canabae were only investigated during small-scale rescue excavations. Recently several previously unknown structures were photographed on the actually unbuilt part of the canabae and the legionary fortress, including residential buildings, street-patterns and traces of whole insulae. These observations were confirmed, that surveying the above-mentioned territories with non-destructive methods could indicate very impressive results. Besides the investigation of the inner structures, an important problem is defining the dimensions of the canabae as far as possible. According to a hypothesis based on the earlier research on the Early Holocene riverbeds of Danube, the ancient Brigetio was built on a natural island. Proving or denying this theory based on archaeological data is a key question of the project. Though the name Brigetio is of celtic origin, we know no traces of celtic settlement in the territory of Brigetio, neither in the surroinding areas. However, on the right bank of these Early Holocene riverbeds – especially to the west of Brigetio – chains of settlements have been discovered by aerial photography, among which traces of pre-Roman native settlements can probably be found.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

Our project can produce several important results, usable for the further research concerning the Roman Brigetio, as well as the aspects of applying the research methods in other areas. According to earlier research, the structure of the canabae and the legionary fortress, the street-plans and buildings would be well-observable. These results will help choosing well-researchable areas with key importance for later archaeological research in Brigetio. We will be able to select those areas where cultural heritage would be in definite danger in case of the expansion of the modern city. Precise maps with well-usable topographical data of the researched territory will be accessible. Different research methods can be compared with each other, which benefits the improvement of their efficiency for later investigations. The research of the canabae, legionary fortress and the surrounding areas could produce very important results in international comparison as well. Research on the surrounding Late Iron Age and Roman settlement systems will improve our knowledge not only on the background of the Roman period Brigetio, but on its predecessors as well. That may help further attempts to define the topographical location of the illyrian-speaking azali, which separated the celtic tribes of boii and eravisci.
Brigetio is one of the key sites in the process aiming to declare the Hungarian Danube Limes as a World Heritage Site, therefore in case of success our research will act as a base of the background materials prepared for the public. This process would obviously benefit the development of tourism and cultural life in Komárom and its surroundings.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

The city of ancient Brigetio which situated in the territory of the present-day Komárom, having a legionary fortress, too, was one of the most important setllements in Pannonia besides Aquincum. Brigetio is one of the key places in the process aiming to declare the Hungarian Danube Limes as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, however, there were no systematic archaeological research in the legionary fortress and the adjacent military settlement so far. Recent aerial photographs of the currently unbuilt territories have produced informations on the traces of the Roman street-pattern, residential buildings and other structures. The main aim of our project is the modern, non-destructive research of that territory by aerial photography, fieldwalking, geophysical and geographical survey and small trial excavations, to gather important informations on the currently unknown inner structures of the legionary fortress and the military settlement, and to investigate the building types, roads and the aqueduct. Besides of that, further key question of the project is locating the presumed Celtic settlement which preceded the Roman city. If the Hungarian Danube Limes – together with Brigetio - became a World Heritage Site, our results would be well integrated with the presentation of the site, would serve as a base for further research, which benefit the development of tourism and cultural life in Komárom and its surroundings.

Final report

Results in Hungarian
A kutatás eredményei jelentősen meghaladták a pályázat indulásakor prognosztizált várható eredményeket.

Results of the research has exceeded all of our expectations concerning the prospective results framed at the beginning of the work. The field walkings, geophysical surveys and aerial photography has highly extended and changed our previous knowledge on the topography of Brigetio, which has been enriched with numerous new elements – streets, buildings, public works. Results of geographical research has shed new light on the hydrogeology of Roman Brigetio and the questions of settlement development. The excavations carried out during the project produce discoveries of international importance, such as the bronze tablet with the law of Philippus Arabs, the excavation of the first bath in Brigetio, localizing the principia of the legionary fortress and the Late Roman apsidal building where Valentinian I probably died. 30 papers was given during the project in scientific conferences in Hungary and abroad, and our results were published in 20 articles in Hungarian and foreign languages. The research has been continued due to the highly important new perspectives in the frame of a new project „Fortress – City: the Roman settlement complex of Brigetio, between 2016 and 2020.
