A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

In nature, organisms often face substantial abiotic and biotic environmental variation in their lifetime. In response to such variations, alternative phenotypes may evolve as adaptations that allow organisms to maximize their fitness in the environment they experience. Renewed interest in phenotypic plasticity contributed to the development of numerous theoretical models and predictions about the conditions under which adaptive plasticity may evolve; however, consensus about the potential significance of plasticity in different traits in different life-history stages is still lacking. In the proposed research I aim to investigate the effect of several abiotic and biotic environmental cues on reproductive behaviour, maternal effects and embryonic responses in smooth newts (Lissotriton vulgaris), and examine how individuals originating from various sub-populations differ in their phenotypic response to changes in their environment. Furthermore, I will investigate genetic differentiation between sub-populations and environmental predictability in the breeding habitat of the studied meta-population. With an optimality model I will also examine adaptive plasticity in a meta-population of a species, where plastic phenotypes may exhibit plasticity in different life history stages and specialists are capable of choosing the appropriate habitat for their offspring.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

According to theory, plastic responses are favoured by natural selection only if environmental variation is intermediate and population structure hinders genetic adaptation to local conditions. However, we know very little about how various forms of plastic responses may contribute to individuals’ success in differently predictable environments, despite their potential significance for ecology, evolution and conservation, through effects on individual fitness, interspecific interactions and demography. The proposed experiments will help to better understand the significance of plasticity in different life history stages and how environmental variability and genetic structure affects the evolution of plastic responses in the studied amphibian meta-population. Furthermore, we may also gain insight about the general conditions under which a phenotype exhibiting adult plasticity might prevail.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

The proposed project focuses on highly relevant and intriguing questions regarding the evolutionary consequences of environmental variation and the significance of various plastic responses in an amphibian meta-population. By collecting environmental and genetic data, performing experiments and modelling, this project is very likely to contribute considerably to the quickly expanding research field of phenotypic plasticity. Results will have important implications for evolutionary biology, behavioural ecology, and potentially for conservation biology, and may spark new directions for studying the potential role of plasticity in micro-evolutionary processes. Findings will increase our understanding how natural populations are capable of adapting to variable environments and persist in fragmented landscapes where local extinctions, e.g. due to stochasticity or anthropogenic impact, are likely to occur.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

Although environment-induced phenotypic variation was considered to be a mere nuisance for a long time, plasticity became a central paradigm in modern evolutionary biology in the last two decades. It is because now accumulating evidence suggests that a wide variety of living organisms are able to adjust their behaviour, morphology or life-history traits to actual or local environmental conditions, thus phenotypic plasticity contributes greatly to diversity in nature. However, we still lack consensus about which traits are the most likely to become plastic in different circumstances and what are their role in population persistence. In this project I aim to test how environmental variation and genetic structure influences plasticity in a variety of traits in smooth newts (Lissotriton vulgaris), a species with complex life history. Such studies are necessary if we aim to increase our knowledge about the evolution of plastic responses and assess the role of plasticity in mitigating the effect of (abrupt) environmental changes.

A pályázat megvalósítása során kísérletes körülmények között vizsgáltam, hogy a predációs veszély, mint az egyik legfontosabb környezeti jel, hogyan befolyásolja a felnőtt állatok szaporodási befektetését, a lerakott peték kelési idejét, illetve a kikelt lárvák viselkedését pettyes gőtéknél (Lissotriton vulgaris). A kísérletek eredményei alapján a nőstények képesek azonnali plasztikus választ adni és szaporodási befektetésüket időbeli és környezeti tényezőkhöz igazítani. Emellett azt is kimutattuk, hogy egy prediktív környezeti jel finom léptékű időbeli változása detektálható változásokat okozhat az utódok fenotípusában, illetve a szülői környezet jelentősen befolyásolhatja az utódok fenotípusos válaszát a korai fejlődési időszakban jellemző környezettel interakcióban. Mindemellett a létrehozott optimalitás modellünk predikciói alapján a specialista fenotípusok véletlentől eltérő élőhely-használata jelentősen korlátozhatja a plaszticitás evolúcióját, ugyanakkor a plasztikus fenotípusnak kedvező feltételek az egyik életszakaszban mérsékelhetik a környezeti heterogenitásra vonatkozó feltétel küszöbértékét a másik életszakaszban komplex életmenettel jellemezhető modell organizmusoknál. A vizsgált meta-populáció egyes alpopulációi közötti genetikai differenciálódás elemzésének befejezése után arra is választ kaphatunk majd, hogy a genetikai adaptáció is fontos szerepet játszhat-e a környezeti szempontból heterogén szaporodó helyekhez való alkalmazkodásban.
Results in English
During the project I investigated the effect of predation threat, one of the most important environmental cues, on females’ reproductive investment, hatching time and behavioural responses of the larvae in smooth newts (Lissotriton vulgaris). According to the results, female smooth newts have the potential to exhibit activational plasticity and invest differently into eggs depending on temporal and environmental factors. Furthermore, our findings provided experimental evidence that fine-scale temporal variation in a predictive cue can lead to detectable changes in offspring phenotype. Also, the obtained results highlighted the importance of the parental environment, which may exert a substantial influence on progeny’s phenotypic responses to the environment in interaction with early environmental effects. Moreover, our constructed optimality model predicted that the ability of non-random habitat use in specialist phenotypes can substantially limit the evolution of plasticity, but favourable conditions in one life stage may relax the heterogeneity thresholds in the other stage for the plastic phenotype in organisms characterised by multiple life stages. The completion of the analysis on genetic differentiation between sub-populations may also reveal whether genetic adaptation is also taking place at the environmentally heterogeneous breeding habitats.
