A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A pályázati munka célja nagy-aktivitású radioaktív hulladékok biztonságos tárolására alkalmas új boroszilikát üvegek előállítása, atomi szerkezetük tudományos igényű meghatározása. Erre a célra alkalmas a 10 MW-os Budapesti Kutatóreaktornak helyet adó épület, ahol a kísérleti munkámat képező PSD neutrondiffraktométer is működik. A boroszilikát- és a radioaktív elemeket tároló üvegek szerkezetének megismerése új információval szolgál mind a tudományos szakterület, mind a nukleáris ipar számára. Gazdaságos előállíthatóságuk megoldást jelenthet a nagy-aktivitású hulladékok tárolására.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

A különböző eredetű nukleáris hulladékok tárolására alkalmas anyagok közül a boroszilikát üvegek bizonyultak a legmegfelelőbbnek.
A munka célja, egyszerű, gazdaságos eljárással előállított tároló boroszilikát üveg összetétel kifejlesztése, amely a radionuklidok széles skálájára lesz alkalmazható. A projekt keretén belül egy kis méretű radiokémiai labort kívánok létesíteni, ahol olvasztással és gyorshűtéses technikát alkalmazva állítom elő a kívánt üveg összetételeket. Erre a célra alkalmas a 10 MW-os Budapesti Kutatóreaktornak helyet adó épület.
Gazdaságos előállíthatóságuk megoldást jelenthetnek a nagy-aktivitású hulladékok tárolására.
Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The aim of the project is to synthesize novel borosilicate glass matrix for long term storage of radioactive waste materials, and to determine the atomic structure of these new glass compositions. Due to the hollow structure of glasses, the radioactive elements are linked into the network structure, and the dissolved radionuclides becomes strongly bonded to the glass and therefore become isolated from the biosphere.
I plan to establish a small radiochemistry laboratory for preparation of the planned glassy materials by rapid quench technique, which would open new possibility for other projects, as well. For this work the building, which hosts the 10 MW Budapest research reactor, where I carry out my experimental work using the PSD neutron diffractometer, provides an ideal surrounding from the point of radioactive safety regulations. The network structure of the glasses will be investigated by combined neutron- and X-ray diffraction, EXAFS and reverse Monte Carlo modelling.
I will determine the partial atomic pair-correlation functions, which provide structural data for the short- and medium-range order, like partial atomic distances, coordination surroundings, ring statistics, bonding characteristics, not investigated so far. The formulation of new borosilicate glasses and the knowledge of their glassy structure resulting in this project will provide new information for the scientific community and a special interest is expected from nuclear industrial companies. Their economical preparation could be a possible solution to the high-level waste storage.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The most important requirement of radioactive waste storage is, that the waste must be completely isolated from the biosphere. Vitrification appears to be the most promising way to achieve chemical isolation of the waste materials. Several famous research laboratories are working on the optimisation of the vitrification process, the publicity is partly open. The optimised glassy materials contain large number of - even 10-20 different - elements, therefore the characterization of their structure is very difficult.
The basic question of the present research is to solve in a safe and economically way the stable, long-term storage problem of the high activity level actinides (U, Np, Pu, Am, Cm) and the fission products (Sr, Cs, etc.), which remain behind after reprocessing nuclear fuel. We plan to develop suitable compositions with stable structure, which contain only few components (typically 5-6 different oxides) and can be realized within an economical preparation technology.
We intend to characterise the incorporation of radioactive elements, the atomic structure of the glasses, the possible network units and their links to each other, which builds up the basic structure. Besides the stability of the glass composition, our aim is to increase the amount of loaded radioactive elements for stable and safe disposal.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

To close the nuclear cycle, we need to solve the long term storage of high-level radioactive waste (HLW). HLW storage is one of the primary problems to be solved due to the widespread use of nuclerar energy, however, a lot of questions are still open. The most feasible and accepted way for storage of HLW is the vitrification process, where the active elements are melted and poured into glass form, and thereafter deposited in a deep geological formation, where the objective is to retain the radionuclides in the host rocks, and to block access to the biosphere. In Hungary, the Boda Claystone Formation (BCF) has been found as the potentialy most suitable host rock for HLW storage, located in the W-Mecsek Mountains.
The nuclear industry’s leading countries have already accepted and they support the borosilicate glasses as storage composition and vitrification as the process of the storage of HLW. The above-mentioned Boda Claystone Formation have been selected as the most suitable candidate for host rock of the repository.
In this project, I would like to find a stable and efficient glass composition which is able to keep the HLW materials in itself for a really long-time, and has an economical way of preparation. Additionally, I would also like to understand the structural properties of these glasses in order to optimize the aforementioned properties. The vitrified waste can than be molded in steel cylinders, and disposed in the BCF-clay formation.
Nuclear energy is needed in Hungary, and the service time of the Paks nuclear plant has been extended. Even the construction of new blocks is possible, and this forecasts that Hungary will commit itself besides the nuclear energy for the long term. My work intends to contribute to the success of HLW storage project, which is important for the present and future generations.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

Various types of radioactive waste materials are formed during the operation of a nuclear reactor. The final and safe storage of radioactive waste materials is nowadays an existing problem which needs to be solved urgently. It’s a generally accepted as a technical solution for the HLW storage, to be disposed into suitable geological formations, which are isolated from the environment. The most appropriate host geological rocks are the granite, clay formation, tuff and salt layers. Before displacing the waste here, it can be encapsulated into suitable glass composition. This is called vitrification. The most capable material for storage of a variety nuclear waste is the borosilicate glass system.
This research aims to develop a simple and economical process for preparation of borosilicate glasses which is applicable to store wide range of radionuclides. I plan to establish a radiochemistry laboratory for preparation of glassy materials by melt-quench technique. For this work the building, which hosts the 10 MW Budapest research reactor, provides an ideal surrounding from the point of radioactive safety regulations. In order to optimize the physical properties of the various glasses, I will need to investigate their atomic structure, by combined neutron- and X-ray diffraction, EXAFS and reverse Monte Carlo modelling.
Formulation of new borosilicate glasses and the knowledge of their glassy structure resulting in this project will provide new information for the scientific community and a special interest is expected from nuclear industrial companies. Their economical preparation could be a possible solution to the high-level waste storage.

A projekt célja nagy-aktivitású radioaktív hulladékok tárolására alkalmas matrix-üvegek előállítása, atomi szerkezetük meghatározása. A boroszilikát rendszert szisztematikus előállítási-vizsgálati folyamat során jellemeztem. Meghatároztam, hogy mátrixüveg szerkezeti felépítésében [3]B-O-[4]Si és [4]B-O-[4]Si vegyes láncok vesznek részt. Meghatároztam a maximálisan adalékolható UO3 mennyiséget, amely 40s%. A transzurán elemek beépülésének vizsgálatára-a beszerzés lehetetlensége miatt-kémiai modell elemeket használtam, Ce-ot a Pu atom, Nd-ot a Cm/Am szimulálására.

The aim of the project is to synthesize novel glass matrix for long term storage of radioactive waste materials, and to determine the atomic structure of these new glass compositions. I established a radiochemistry laboratory for preparation of glassy materials, installed a high temperature electrical furnace. During the work I prepared and studied molybdate/borosilicate glasses. The structure was studied by diffraction measurements, and NMR spectroscopy was performed as well. In the case of MoNdBO system, it was established formation of mixed [3],[4]B-O-[4]Mo linkages. For the MoZnBO system, it was found mixed [3],[4]B-O-[4]Mo and [3],[4]B-O-[4]Zn bond-linkages. ZnO proved to be a network former, not a modifier as it is often reported in the literature. Adding UO3, the samples became crystalline, which means that they are not suitable for HLW storage. New borosilicate glassy samples were synthesized. It was established that the basic network structure consists [4]Si-O-[3]B, [4]Si-O-[4]B bond-linkages and the stable Matrix can incorporate a maximum of 40 w%HLW. It is also necessary to study the inclusion of Transuranium elements into the Matrix as well. For non-availability reasons, the chemically equivalent lanthanides were used. Ce substitutes for the radioactive Pu, while Nd for Am/Cm. From the results it was concluded that the U, Ce and Nd can be accommodated into the basic network structure, which might be the reason for the high incorporation ability of the Matrix
