A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A tematikus konferenciák éves ritmusa előre tervezhetővé teszi a feldolgozást, a konferenciákon elhangzott előadások lehetőséget biztosítanak a többi Anjou-ország tisztviselőinek, intézményeinek megismerésére, folyamatos összehasonlítására, biztosítva a hatalmi elit monografikus feldolgozásához szükséges széleskörű ismereteket.
A nemzetközi szakirodalom máig elsősorban Hóman Bálint több mint hetven esztendeje, 1938-ban megjelent könyvét idézi – a tervezett francia nyelvű monográfia a 2000-es évek igényeit kielégítő összefoglalást nyújt a téma iránt érdeklődő olvasóknak.
Az Anjou-országok tematikus összehasonlító vizsgálata mind külföldön, mind Magyarországon mintaadó lehet további hasonló vizsgálatokhoz. A jelenlegi projekt tapasztalatai segítséget adhatnak az Aragón, Habsburg, Jagelló stb. ország-konglomerátumok vizsgálatához is.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The history of the individual territories which were once subjected to the lordship of the Angevin dynasty – Anjou, Maine, Provence, Lotharingia, Sicily and Southern Italy, Piedmont, Lombardy and Tuscany, Hungary, Poland etc. – had generally been researched in a strictly national framework until the 1990s. Contact between the various national historiographies has been provided by the international conferences and the volumes which contained their results in the past two decades. The present application and its partner project starts a new epoch in the history of Angevin research: it puts on standardised and universally accessible foundations the research of the countries and provinces once under Angevin domination. The researchers involved in the program gather according to identical criteria into a common database all the information about the officeholders of all the Angevin territories, which they then work upon again along a common set of criteria. Thus not only the different means and types of official careers, and the relative weights and proportions of various social groups, become visible and available for thorough research, but also comparisons between the different areas are made possible. By the end of the project, alongside the international database, made by joint work, and based on it, five collections of studies in foreign language will be prepared, including papers on the officeholders in Angevin Hungary, as well as a monograph, in Hungarian, which puts the Hungarian material in an international context, and another monograph in French, which will provide an up-to-date knowledge about Angevin rule in Hungary for the international Angevin research.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The present project and its international partner has the aim of exploring and analysing historical sources in the framework of a particular group of medieval countries, which changed constantly both in time and space, namely all those territories once subjected to the domination of the Angevin dynasty. The goal of the program is the examination of an easily definable group, that of all the secular officeholders of the Angevin rulers, in the course of the entire Angevin period in any given territory. The analysis extends to the origins of officeholders, their networks of relationships, expertise and education, as well as to the evolution and modifications of the offices themselves, and to differences between the individual countries and provinces, and in general to the mobility within the body of Angevin officeholders. The basic question of the research: to explore, on the concrete example of the Angevin states, the working of a complex political structure in the Middle Ages, to investigate and understand the ways and means of integration and of official mobility between the different areas or, indeed, the very lack of such possibilities.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

The planned database of Angevin officeholders will create new solid foundations in all the countries once ruled by the Angevin dynasty for further research, restructure our present knowledge of social and institutional history, and redraw the very picture we have so far formed of the period in question. Whereas in the past two decades it was international thematic conferences held every four or five years which provided the possibility of cooperation for experts of Angevin history, in the case of the present program cooperation is continuous right from the outset, as both the creation of the database and the subsequent work on it is done according to identical criteria and through constant exchange of ideas. The annual rhythm of the thematic conferences makes the working schedule predictable, and the lectures offered at the conferences give the occasion for scholars to get acquainted with the officeholders and institutions in the other Angevin countries, and make mutual comparisons, thus furnishing the widest possible range of information which is necessary for a monographical treatment of the power elite.
For Hungarian medieval studies this is the first enterprise of grand scale in which Hungary is present from the outset with a scientific weight commensurate to that of any other interested country. Cooperation offers the possibility to bring forth the scientific interference between Angevin research in Hungary and abroad which has been missing so far, and to integrate Hungarian research results into the main body of international knowledge of Angevin history. International historiography continues to this very day to cite the book of Bálint Hóman which was published more than seventy years ago, in 1938 – the planned monograph in French will provide for the interested public a concise treatment in keeping with the expectations in the 2000s.
The thematic comparative examination of the Angevin countries can serve as an example for similar researches both abroad and in Hungary. More particularly, the experiences of the present project can help to approach the problem of territorial conglomerates under the Aragonese, Habsburg, Jagellonian etc. dynasties.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

In the 13th to 15th centuries the Angevin dynasty was one of the most important ruling houses of Europe, whose power extended from the province in France whence it took its name, through various regions of Europe to Poland and Hungary. The common link between these regions of differing niveaux of development and institutional structure, which sometimes lay at considerable distances from each other, was provided by the dynasty itself. The full-scale examination of all the officeholders throughout the Angevin territories will offer the possibility to gain more profound knowledge than before about the working of the individual countries, the structure of administrators who governed them, about their networks of relationship, the nature of contacts between countries and provinces, and about similarities and differences between institutions in various areas. The inquiry will help to understand how the Angevin countries functioned, and will offer the possibility to make comparisons with the working of territories similarly united under the lordship of other dynasties (Habsburg, Jagellonian, etc.), as well as serving as a historical basis for understanding the processes of integration and disintegration which are unfolding in the present day.

Final report

Results in Hungarian
The project and its international sister project (ANR EUROPANGE, Processes of political community formation: the example of Angevin Europe [13th–15th centuries]) carried out research within the geographical framework of states and provinces once dominated by the Angevin dynasty. The objective of the programme was to examine the corps of secular officers of Angevin rulers. During the project, a prosopographical database and a five-language website were set up and five volumes containing French- and Italian-language studies (among which two have already been published in the series Collection de l'École française de Rome) were written in the course of the collaboration with French, Italian and Canadian colleagues. In the framework of the Hungarian project, a monograph was published in Slovak about the rule of the House of Anjou and another one in Hungarian is coming out this spring. The monograph was translated into French and financial resources for an English-language version are available. Furthermore, a collection of Hungarian-language studies has been written with the title Az Anjou-kor hatalmi elitje [Power elites in the Angevin era]. During the five-year period of the project, the two participants wrote 13 studies either in Hungarian or in French, more than half of which have already been published. As a result of the programme, Hungarian research on Agevin era has become an integral part of international Angevin studies.

A projekt eredményeként a magyar Anjou-kutatás integráns részévé vált a nemzetközi Anjou-kutatásnak.
