Summary in Hungarian
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A megjelentetni tervezett kötet a honfoglaló magyar díszítőművészet kérdéseit tárgyalja. A magyar honfoglalás kori díszítőművészet történeti kontextusban történő bemutatása érdekében a szerző áttekinti a 9-10. századi magyar történelem főbb eseményeit is.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.

A kötet fókuszában a 10. századi magyar művészet formakincsének meghatározása, az egyes motívumok és ikonográfiai típusok eredetének és kapcsolatrendszerének feltérképezése áll, amely alapján a honfoglaló magyarság anyagi kultúrájának művészeti aspektusai új megvilágításba kerülnek. A különféle díszítőelemek történeti vizsgálatával az olvasó betekintést nyerhet a Kelet felől a Kárpát-medencébe érkező magyarság kulturális kapcsolataiba, valamint az elit önazonosságát kifejező vizuális nyelv világába.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A honfoglaló magyar díszítőművészet formatörténeti vizsgálata a 20. század eleje óta kevés figyelemben részesült a régészeti kutatásban. Jelen munka a régészet és a művészettörténet kérdésfelvetéseinek, illetve kutatási módszereinek egymáshoz közelítése révén megteremti a 10. századi magyar művészet új értelmezési kereteit, elősegítve ezáltal a középkori magyar művészet legkorábbi fázisának integrálását a magyar művészettörténet-írás által kialakított képbe. A kötetet megjelenése esetén a szakemberek kézikönyv-jelleggel forgathatják azt egyrészt a saját leletanyaguk megjelenő díszítőelemek szakszerű leírása, másrészt a párhuzamok áttekintése során; a régészettel és a művészettörténettel csak távolabbi viszonyban lévő szakemberek, illetve az érdeklődő közönség számára pedig betekintést nyújt a 10. századi magyar vizuális kultúra főbb kérdéseibe.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

A kiadni kívánt kötet mögött meghúzódó kutatások a 10. századi magyar kultúra e szegmensének vizsgálatára vállalkoztak, áttekintve az ásatások során eddig előkerült leletek jelentős részét. A díszítőművészet elemzése révén a 10. századi társadalom kérdései éppúgy vizsgálhatók, amint a korabeli kulturális kapcsolatok, a különféle dísztárgyakat használó közösség önazonosság-tudatának sajátos megnyilvánulásai, avagy a temetkezési szokások bizonyos elemei. Mindezen kérdések alapvetően járulnak hozzá a magyar honfoglalás kori világ jobb megismeréséhez és megértéséhez.
Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The manuscript to be published investigates the problems of Hungarian Conquest period visual arts. The author's main aim was to collect and classify the various ornaments and patterns appearing on Ancient Hungarian decorated artifacts recovered during the last one and a half century as well as to investigate their international connection system. The manuscript gives a detailed overview of the manufacturing techniques employed by the goldsmiths working for the Ancient Hungarians and presents the main characteristics of 10th-century decorated objects. In order to contextualize the observations made during the analyses of the archaeological material, the author sketches the main outline of 9th-10th-century Hungarian history.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The manuscript defines the ornamental vocabulary of 10th-century Hungarian visual arts, determines the origins and connection systems of the single ornaments and iconographic schemes so as to shed considerable new light on the artistic aspects of Ancient Hungarian material culture. By investigating the 10th-century ornamental vocabulary the interested reader gets an insight into the cultural contacts of the Ancient Hungarians arriving from the East into the Carpathian Basin as well as the elite's visual language expressing their cultural identity.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

Form-historical studies of the Ancient Hungarian decorative arts was one of the less studied fields of Conquest period archaeology since the beginning of the 20th century. The present study therefore creates a new interpretative framework for this research topic by letting converge the approaches and methodologies of archaeological and art historical research, thereby promoting the integration of the earliest phases of Hungarian visual arts into the "great narrative" of medieval Hungarian arts created by art historians. If published, this book is destined to become a handbook for specialist by facilitating the correct identification and professional description of newly recovered 10th-century finds on the one hand and the search for parallels to these findings on the other. Furthermore, for scholars of other disciplines as well as for the interested readers the book offers an useful introduction into and a general overview of Hungarian Conquest period visual culture.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

The Ancient Hungarians' visual arts constitute an important and, basing on the archaeological record, well-examinable part of their material and intellectual culture. The researches resulting in the present volume to be published, therefore, focused on this section of 10th-century Hungarian culture by investigating the material record revealed by the excavations conducted in the last one hundred and fifty years. The examination of 10th-century decorative arts help us to better understand several other related research topics, as, for example, the problems surrounding the contemporary social structure, cultural contacts, mortuary customs or the identities of communities wearing these decorated artifacts. All these issues contribute significantly to our understanding of the world of the Ancient Hungarians.
