A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Célunk a késleltetés nélküli periodikus modellek perzisztenciájára vonatkozó eredmények általánosítása periodikus, impulzív funkcionál-differenciálegyenletekre.

A sterilrovar-technikát kártevő, ill. betegségeket terjesztő rovarok populációinak szabályozására használják: sterilizált hím rovarokat bocsátanak ki, melyek versengenek a többi hímmel a nőstényekért, csökkentve a következő generáció létszámát. A korábbi matematikai modelleket funkcionál-differenciálegyenletek alkalmazásával szeretnénk pontosabbá tenni, hogy pontosabban meghatározhassuk a rovarok kiirtásához, ill. létszámuk megfelelő szabályozásához szükséges kontroll szintjét.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

A különböző reprodukciós számokat küszöbparaméterként használva szeretnénk megadni a megoldások viselkedésének teljes karakterizációját.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

A projekt fő kérdése periodikus, impulzív, késleltetett modellek vizsgálata.

Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The key question of the project is persistence of periodic, impulsive delay differential equations with applications from ecology and epidemiology. Persistence theory applies to infinite- and finite-dimensional dynamical systems, and to discrete-time as well as to continuous semiflows, and answers questions such as among interacting species which will survive or die out over the long term. Periodicity (to describe periodic changes of the environment) and impulsive models (to describe short-term effects) appear naturally in population dynamical models. The study of periodic and impulsive models is mathematically very challenging, and becomes even more complicated if time delay is present. Our aim is to generalize the results about persistence for periodic models without a time delay to periodic, impulsive delay differential equations.

Sterile insect technique is used to control populations of pests and insects which are vectors of different diseases: sterilized male insects are released which compete for the females with the wild males, thus reducing the number of insects in the next generation. We would like to make previous mathematical models more precise by using delay equations, thus determining more precisely the level of the control needed to eliminate the insects or to regulate their number.

A further question of the project is to establish a modelling framework for the spread of ectoparasite-borne diseases using ordinary and delay differential equations and to give a complete description of the global dynamics of these models. We study the effect of different control strategies to show whether there is a way to eradicate the infestations or the diseases.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

Recently, a few papers have appeared about persistence for periodic epidemic models without delay. The aim of the project is to give similar results for periodic, impulsive models which include time delay as well. We plan to generalize the persistence results of Rebelo, Margheri and Bacaër, resp. Wang and Zhao to periodic, impulsive equations with time delay. We would like to apply the method established by Wang and Wu to approximate the periodic coefficients by piecewise constant functions to reduce the equation to a finite dimensional discrete system.

Mathematical models for the sterile insect technique have used ordinary differential equations so far, however, real data show that changes of insect populations are better described by functional differential equations. Our aim is to establish more precise models by using delay differential equations, and to obtain results about persistence: we would like to determine the level of control needed to eliminate the insects or to regulate the number of the population.

We have established a basic model for the spread of ectoparasite-borne diseases. Our aim is to make this novel model as realistic as possible. We need to include the role of animals transmitting the vectors to humans, and delays to model latency which is present in several ectoparasite-borne diseases. The models have different basic reproduction numbers corresponding to infestation and infection. We would like to give a complete characterization of the behaviour of the solutions using the different reproduction numbers as threshold parameters.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

The investigation of periodic ecologic and epidemic models is a research area of great current interest. Periodicity arises naturally in several population dynamical models: let us just think about the annual change of the environment and the annual life cycle of different species. In epidemiology, there are also several factors that induce periodic models: the changing of contact rates, vector populations or regular vaccination. Impulsive models are used to describe short-term effects, e.g. natural disasters or vaccination campaigns. Nowadays, with the climate changing and new diseases and epidemics arising, the prediction of which species or disease will die out or persist is increasingly important; this is studied by persistence theory. Recently, several important results were published about periodic models, and we plan to generalize, further develop these results to periodic, impulsive models with time delay.

Using the sterile insect technique has proved to be efficient in several occasions, however, in other cases its result was not satisfying. In some cases it might even increase the insect population. To understand these phenomena, we need delay differential equation models which describe the technique more precisely.

The novelty of the model family we have established for the spread of ectoparasite-borne diseases consists in describing simultaneously the spread of the parasites and the disease transmitted by them. Similar models have been absent so far from literature and we expect it to be the base for several more complex and more realistic models. We hope that our models can be used in disease ecology and that we can also give recommendations to help choosing between different control strategies (disinfestation, isolation, quarantine) to fight against infestations and diseases.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

The key question of the project is the study of periodic, impulsive delay models. Periodicity arises in several models of biological populations, as e.g. the annual life cycle of the species, the seasonality of vaccinations and weather induce the use of periodic equations; while impulsive models are used to describe short-term effects (e.g. natural disasters, vaccination campaigns). With the help of the mathematically challenging research area of persistence theory, we can give predictions concerning which species or disease will persist or die out. This is an increasingly important question in the days of climate change and the emergence of new diseases, pandemics.

One of the phenomena studied in the project is the sterile insect technique used to control pests and insects which are vectors for different diseases. The method consists in releasing sterilized male insects, thus decreasing the number of the next generation. We have to understand the dynamics of the insect population and the effect of sterile insects precisely to successfully use the technique. For this aim, we need to establish more precise mathematical models.

We have established a basic model to describe the spread of ectoparasites (e.g. lice, fleas) and diseases transmitted by them (e.g. plague, typhus), however, we need to make it more realistic to describe real situations more precisely. We need to include factors like latency or the role of animals transmitting parasites. We plan to apply our models to real epidemics. We hope that with the help of our models we can give recommendations concerning control strategies (disinfestation, quarantine) thus contributing to the fight against the diseases.

A parazitaterjesztő állatok szerepét is magában foglaló modellt alkottunk, melynek dinamikájára teljes leírást adtunk. Új modellt alkottunk az ebola terjedésének leírására időben változó intervenciós paraméterekkel, mellyel pontos előrejelzést adtunk a betegek várható számára. Új modellt alkottunk, mellyel vizsgáltuk a gyermekbénulás újbóli elterjedésének lehetőségét, figyelembe véve, hogy az inaktivált vakcina csak részleges védelmet ad; teljesen leírtuk a modell dinamikáját. A környezet periodikus változásait figyelembe vevő, funkcionál-differenciálegyenletes modelleket alkottunk meg több betegség (malária, Koi herpesz) leírására, melyeket a betegség megmaradásának/kihalásának szempontjából vizsgálunk. Results in English
During the grant period, I studied the stability and persistence of several models from mathematical epidemiology and population dynamics. Improving our earlier models for the transmission of ectoparasites and diseases spread by them, we established new models for diseases with multiple virus strains. We completely described the dynamics of the models with the help of threshold parameters obtained via iterative procedures. We also established a model including the role of animals transmitting the parasites and gave a complete description of its dynamics. We created a new model for Ebola spread with time-changing intervention parameters and gave precise forecasts concerning the number of infections. We created a novel model to study the possible re-emergence of polio, considering the partial protectivity of inactivated vaccines and completely described the dynamics of the model. We established functional differential equation models which consider the periodical changes of encironment for several diseases (malaria, Koi herpes) and study them from the point of view of diseases extinction/persistence. I submitted 6 paper during the grant period, 5 of which have appeared so far in highly ranked international journals; 3 more are before submission and 4 in preparation. During the grant period, I gave 9 talks in international conferences and seminars. Based on my results, I obtained the Gyula Farkas Memorial Prize and the János Bolyai Research Scholarship.
