A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.

A kvantum alapú műholdas kommunikáció megoldatlan kérdéseire fókuszálunk, az alábbi területeken: kvantum alapú műholdas kommunikáció számára fontos csatornák modellezése; egy komplex hálózati modell készítése, amely lehetővé teszi a globális kulcsszétosztást műholdakon keresztül; klasszikus és kvantum alapú hibajavítás a globális kulcscserélési eljárásban.
Megközelítésünkben a kommunikáló felek klasszikus információt szeretnének kicserélni egymással, ehhez szimmetrikus kulcsú kódolási eljárásokat használnak, a szükséges kulcscserét pedig kvantum alapon hajtják végre. Ilyen jellegű komplex hálózat vizsgálatával korábban nem foglalkoztak. Az elmúlt évek során, a vezető kutató 2012-ben írt doktori disszertációjára alapozva, matematikai modellünk segítségével elkezdtük megvizsgálni a kvantumalapú műholdas kommunikáció gyakorlati megvalósításának bizonyos paramétereit.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

LEO, MEO, GEO) keringenek.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The satellite communication has been used for many years, and we know its limits. We need bandwidth with higher efficiency, and safe and secret communication. Quantum computing is based on various quantum effects and offers solutions for different problems, e.g., prime factorization, searching in unsorted database, key distribution and information coding. An important communication question is how a secret key can be distributed among the communication parties. The quantum key distribution (QKD) offers a secure solution for this problem. In QKD applications, different polarization of photons represents the quantum states. For successful quantum satellite based approaches, we need precise atmospheric model and we need to select between different quantum protocols. Since the current implementation of quantum cryptography protocols is based on photons, the exact description of the atmosphere's optical properties should be known. However, the feasibility of the different quantum algorithms is an open question.
We will develop a model of a complex network for enabling the global, space segment based quantum communication. Our complex network model will handle different ground stations on the Earth, satellites on different orbits, and communication channels with different kind of optical and transmission errors. With the help of the model, we could analyze different requirements of the quantum based communication from engineering point of view (e.g., the classical and the quantum bit error rate of the whole communication segment, waiting time, the cost of the communication, etc.)

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

We will focus on the still open questions of the quantum based satellite communication. Our focuses are on the following: Modeling the optical channels which could be used in the quantum based satellite communications; Creating a complex network which enables the global key distribution via satellites; Classical and quantum error correction in the global key exchange process.
The communication parties would like to change some classical information, they use symmetric coding for the secure communication, the secret key is changed by a quantum key distribution protocol, the key is used for the classical coding in the communications, and at some point, the whole process has to restart. In the last years, we started to analyze selected parameters of the quantum based satellite communication based on a mathematical model published in the PhD dissertation of the postdoctoral researcher. We will develop our initial theoretical optical atmospheric channel model which describes the behavior of weak laser pulses to simulate the communication process over a satellite quantum channel.
We will create a model of a complex network for enabling the global, space segment based quantum communication. This complex model will handle different ground stations on the Earth, satellites on different orbits, communication needs from different purposes, and communication channels with different kind of optical errors (e.g., which are depending on different climate and/or weather conditions).

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

The research focuses on still unsolved questions of the quantum based satellite communications. We will develop a model of optical quantum channel based on physical parameters, and a simulation environment for analyzing the model.
Within the framework of the planned research project, there is no possibility to perform physical measurements regarding the optical parameters and properties of the atmosphere. However, our institute has good research cooperation with the Geodetic and Geophysical Institute (GGI), Research Centre for Astronomy and Earth Sciences, Hungarian Academy of Sciences at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, whose headquarter is located in Sopron. The researchers of the GGI will supply us with physical measurement data of the optical atmospheric channel. Based on these data, we will be able to create a precise model of the free-space quantum based communication.
We will analyze the key exchange procedure of different protocols including BB84, S09 and different continuous variable protocols (CV QKD) focusing on errors in the functions of the orbital height and zenith angle of the satellite. We will analyze the performance of different classical and quantum error correction algorithms to supply the global, satellite based quantum key distribution. As a result, we will have a complex network model which enables us to model a real communication process using classical and quantum based algorithms (e.g., classical error correction, QKD, privacy amplification, etc.).
During the three years of the research, we can boost our international partnership, become active and recognized members of the research community. We hope that the future international cooperation can help us to play key role in international funding projects (e.g., projects of the European Horizon 2020 framework).

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

Quantum computing is based on various quantum effects and offers solutions for different problems, e.g., prime factorization, searching in unsorted database, key distribution and information coding .An important communication question is how a secret key can be distributed among the communication parties. The quantum key distribution (QKD) offers a secure solution for this problem. In QKD applications, different polarization of photons represents the quantum states. Using satellite systems, the free-space quantum communication should be able to realize secret key agreement over long distances, and the quantum key distribution can be extended to achieve global quantum data protection. We will focus on the still open questions of the quantum based satellite communication. There is a need for a complex network which enables the global, space segment based quantum communication. This complex network will handle different ground stations on the Earth, satellites on different orbits, communication needs from different purposes and communication channels with different kind of optical and transmission errors which need to be handled.
