Summary in Hungarian
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A javasolt projekt eredményei sikeresen kiegészítenék a korábbi kutatási eredményeket, hiszen korszerű kutatási módszereket használva, eddig nem vizsgált szempontokat figyelembe véve volna megalkotható a lezajlott folyamatok modellje.
Mindezen felül valamennyi kutatási eredményt egy nagyobb léptékű modell felállításában is használhatnánk, mely a vizsgált területek geológiájával kapcsolatos vitatott kérdések pontosítására is szolgál.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

E jura időszaki kőzetek a Neotethys-óceán alatti egykori kéreg maradványai.
Mindezen felül e folyamatok bizonyos esetekben akár ércképződéshez is vezethetnek. Előbbi eredmények a jövőbeli régészeti (eredet)kutatások során is alkalmazhatóak, míg az utóbbiak a hasonló területen végzett jövőbeli nyersanyagkutatások számára lehetnek fontosak világszerte.
Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

Jurassic, incomplete ophiolitic sequences are known both in NE-Hungary and in N-Italy. These basic magmatic rocks were not formed in a typical mid-oceanic ridge environment; the Italian ones formed as marginal basin ophiolites, while the Hungarian ones formed most likely related to the opening of a back-arc-basin or a marginal sea. These rocks were affected by syn- and epigenetic hydrothermal processes. The volcanism related processes resulted in hydrothermal mineral formation, also ore formation, and they are well described in the case of the mid-oceanic ridges. As a contrary, in case of such non typical mid-oceanic ridge environment, a detailed description of the characteristics of the primary processes, as well as of the epigenetic processes affected on the studied localities are not available. Therefore, characterisation of these processes will complete beneficially the earlier knowledge. Describing the P, T, X features of the hydrothermal processes happened primarily and secondarily, together with the detailed mineralogical, petrological, geochemical comparison of the different Hungarian and Italian localities would allow us characterize better the geology of the studied localities, as well as to establish a reasonable model of the hydrothermal fluid circulations. However, in case of the Italian localities, ore formation also happened during some of these processes (volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits), while at the Hungarian localities no such phenomena is known. Thus, important conclusions on the deciding factors of the ore formation can be drawn also. The elaborated models will be appropriate to be used in the future at other localities of the Neotethyan realm.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

Hydrothermal processes happening at submarine basaltic environments are well known, and well described in the case of the mid-oceanic ridges. But information on that processes, which happen at non typical mid-oceanic ridge environments, as well as on the epigenetic fluid-rock interaction processes, which have effects on those ophiolitic sequences, are incomplete. The study of the proposed N-Italian and NE-Hungarian Jurassic magmatic rock exposing localities would allow completing successfully the earlier knowledge concerning the geology of the studied regions, as well as concerning the modeling of the hydrothermal processes.
The proposed project aims to prepare a detailed characterization of all the identified syn- (i.e. submarine hydrothermal) and epigenetic (e.g. low T hydrothermal, or low-grade metamorphic) fluid-rock interaction processes. The results of these processes are the hydrothermal minerals, which are often superimposing each other. Thus, the identification of the different generations, the different steps of the processes are crucial. Following this, determining the main characteristics (P, T, X, mineral paragenesis, geochemical and petrological features) of the identified processes is also an important aim, together with the comparison of the different studied localities. Both of these allow establishing either smaller- or bigger-scaled models, related to the geology of the studied region and the hydrothermal processes. The comparison of the barren Hungarian and ore-bearing Italian localities would help in determining the factors, which have influence on the ore formation.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

The syn- and epigenetic hydrothermal processes of the submarine basalts of the NE-Hungarian Szarvaskő area as well as the N-Italian Ligurides have been poorly investigated from a geological, mineralogical and geochemical point of view. Thus, the earlier studies both on these kinds of fluid-rock interaction processes as well as on the proposed study areas are incomplete. The results of the proposed project would complete efficiently these earlier researches, as new scientific aspects and state-of-the-art methodology would be used to establish reasonable models.
The detailed mineralogical, petrological and geochemical description of the single localities found in the Hungarian and in the Italian uncomplete ophiolitic sequences will allow to identify and to distinguish the different, often superimposing steps of the syn- and epigenetic hydrothermal processes, wich sometimes results in ore formation, too. This would be one of the most important results of the project, as detailed characterisation of the examined aspects was neither done before at any of the proposed localities, nor in other geologically similar (non typidal mid-oceanic ridge) occurrences in the world. As only limided data is by far available, these new results could serve as base for the future works, not only in our region, in the Neotethyan realm, but worldwide, too.
The comparison of the results got from the different regions will allow drawing conclusions on the general, key determining factors of the hydrothermal processes and also the determining factors of the submarine volcanism related ore forming processes. However, all the obtained data could be used at establishing a bigger model, which could solve some unanswered questions related to the geology of the studied regions.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

Results of submarine basaltic volcanism are exposed in the area of Szarvaső (NE-Hungary) and also in the Ligurides (N-Italy). These Jurassic rocks are remnants of the crust formed under the Neotethys Ocean. Primarily submarine procceses occurred, caused by the upheated (by the volcanim) seawater, as well as by the development of a bigger fluid circulation system. Secondarily later processes, like metamorphism during the obduction of the crust, could have effect on the rocks. All these processes resulted in mineral formation, which can be found e.g. in veins, amygdales, cavities in the basalt.
The case of these Italian and Hungarian basalts is rather unique, as they cannot be modelled with well known systems, such as those, which occur at the mid-oceanic ridges. Thus, questions concerning the geology of the localities, as well as the happened water-rock interaction were arisen. The detailed mineralogical, petrological and geochemical characterisation of the above mentioned processes would complete beneficially the earlier knowledge, and solve some long-lasting problems.
However, these processes result in some cases in ore mineral formation as well. Several ore deposits of this kind are known in Italy from the Bronze Age, but they are completely missing at the Hungarian localities. Therefore the research has the aim to characterize the ore formation processes, and to determine the key factors, which are responsible for ore formation. The former results could be used also in future archaeological studies (provenance of ancient objects), while the latter would be useful in future explorations, when similar occurrences are studied worldwide.

Final report

Results in Hungarian
A vizsgált észak-appennini előfordulásokkal kapcsolatosan is számos új eredmény született; egyértelműen meghatározásra került a VMS ércesedéseket létrehozó fluidum forrása és a hidrotermás rendszer dinamikus változékonysága.
Results in English
The aim of this project was to better understand the syn- and epigenetic hydrothermal processes affecting the Jurassic basalts of the Neotethyan realm. Several research methods were combined to study some tectonised NE Hungarian and some well preserved N Italian locations. Hence they could successfully complete each other. Using the results of polarising microscopy, SEM-EDS, SEM-CL, EPMA, XRD, LA-ICP-MS, fluid inclusion microthermometry and Raman spectroscopy, whole rock geochemical, stable- and noble gas isotopic studies, it was possible to trace the often superimposing hydrothermal processes at the different locations. The P, T, V, x conditions of the hydrothermal fluids were determined and thus the hydrothermal events could be modelled. New results of the project regarding the Hungarian locations are the determination of some, by far not known hydrothermal events (bigger scaled fluid circulation system with weak ore mineralisation as well as a unique Ca-metasomatic process in the Szarvaskő Unit), as well as a lot of new information was gathered regarding the earlier known phenomena. Several new results were obtained also related to the N Apenninic sites; the fluid source of the VMS ore forming fluid was reliably determined and the dynamic variability of the hydrothermal system was proven. Additionally, the used methodology is completely new in the field of VMS deposit studies, similar detailed studies are practically not known.
