Summary in Hungarian
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A Debreceni Számelméleti Iskola az elmúlt 40 évben nemzetközi viszonylatban meghatározó szerepet játszott a diofantikus számelméletben. A modern kutatások szinte valamennyi fő irányában élvonalbeli, esetenként áttörést jelentő eredményeket értünk el. A jelen pályázat keretein belül folytatni kívánjuk korábbi vizsgálatainkat. Emelett új irányban is tervezünk kutatásokat. Kutatási elképzeléseinket a következő témakörök köré csoportosíthatjuk:

1) Minél általánosabb végességi kritériumok feltárása; véges sok megoldás esetén a lehető legélesebb felső korlátok levezetése a megoldásszámra, valamint magukra a megoldásokra (diszkrimináns egyenletek, széteső forma egyenletek, általánosított Thue-Mahler egyenletek, végesen generált tartományok feletti egyenletek).

2) Hatékony algoritmusok kidolgozása egész megoldások meghatározására (index forma egyenletek, egység egyenletek és elliptikus egyenletek).

3) Az összes megoldás meghatározása bizonyos fontos, jól ismert diofantikus egyenletek esetén (index forma egyenletek, Nagell-Ljunggren egyenlet).

4) A nyert eredmények alkalmazásai az algebrai számelméletben, a rekurzív sorozatok elméletében, bizonyos aritmetikai gráfokra vonatkozóan, valamint számtani sorozatok tagjainak szorzatában található teljes hatványok meghatározására.

A vizsgálatok során a jelenlegi modern módszerek (pl.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A diofantikus egyenletek évezredek óta foglalkoztatják a matematikusokat. Ezen egyenletek egyre több alkalmazást eredményeznek. Sőt, a 20. században kiderült, hogy bizonyos értelemben majdnem az egész matematika, legalábbis a konstruktív matematika diofantikus egyenletek megoldhatóságára vezet. Diofantikus számelméleti kutatási eredményeink évtizedek óta a nemzetközi szakmai élvonalhoz tartoznak.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

A diofantikus egyenletek évezredek óta a matematikai kutatások fontos területét jelentették. A stratégiai cél a megoldások meghatározása.
Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

In the last four decades the number theory research group in Debrecen played an improtant, internationally recognized role in Diophantine number theory. We have achieved significant results in almost all main research areas, making a breakthrough in some cases. In the frame of the present project we intend to continue our previous research activity. Besides this, we plan to start research into new directions as well. We intend to concentrate on the following research topics:

1) Establishment of new finiteness criteria of much general type; in case of finitely many solutions deriving good, possibly sharp uppen bounds for the number of solutions and for the solutions themselves (discriminant -, decomposable form -, generalized Thue-Mahler equations and equations over finitely generated domains).
2) Development of further efficient algorithms for determining the integral solutions (index form -, unit - and elliptic equations).
3) Determination of all solutions in case of certain well-known and important Diophantine equations (index form equations, Nagell-Ljunggren equation).
4) Applications of our results in algebraic number theory, in the theory of recurrence sequences, to certain arithmetic graphs and to the description of perfect powers in products of consecutive terms of arithmetic progressions.

In these investigations, beside the use of the present modern methods (such as Baker’s method, the modular method and computational procedures) we shall need certain improvements of these methods and developments of new ones, like multidimensional continued fractions.

We shall do this research in collaboration with each other, and also with colleagues from abroad.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The main objective of our research can be described as follows: In 1900, David Hilbert formulated as the main problem of the general Diophantine number theory to give a procedure that is able to output whether an arbitrary Diophantine equation is solvable or not. In 1970, Yurij Matijaszevics showed that there is no such a general algorithm. Hilbert's problem can be solved only for specified classes of Diophantine equations. During the 20th century, partly through the contribution of the Number Theory School of Debrecen, many of these classes have been described and several fundamental theorems have benn established and later extended. The fundamental question of our research is to prove theorems about the solvability of Diophantine equations and give algorithms to find all the solutions of large families of Diophantine equations.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

Diophantine equations have been studied very intensively since the antiquity. They have yielded more and more applications. In the 20th century it turned out that in certain sense almost the whole mathematics or at least the constructive mathematics can be reduced to the solvability of Diophantine equations. Our number theory research group of Debrecen belongs to the leading research groups in Diophantine number theory. We achieved a great number of remarkable results and developed several powerful methods in this area. With the help of the new OTKA grant we wish to maintain our leading position. We intend to generalize or extend important and well-known results and initiate new research directions. We plan to give further applications of already existing results and elaborate new methods which hopefully will enable us to attack some Diophantine problems which seem to be hopeless to solve.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

Our research is related to solutions of Diophantine equations. Diophantine equations are equations with solutions in the set of integers. Mathematicians have been interested in them for a very long time. The main aim is to determine the solutions, but this is possible only for special classes of equations. Our goal is to extend the set of these classes as much as possible. If we can solve an equation either by hand or by computer, then we can give a practical algorithm to find all the solutions. We intend also to develop theoretical algorithms which make possible at least in principle to determine the solutions.

Results in Hungarian
A legkiemelkedőbb eredmények a következők. A felsorolt egyenletek centrális szerepet játszanak a diofantikus számelméletben.
Results in English
Several remarkable results have been established on various diophantine problems of fundamental importance. These results concern mostly unit equations, discriminant and index equations, power integral bases, Thue and superelliptic equations, power sum type equations, number systems and their generalizations, and additive and multiplicative decomposition of infinite integer sequences. The most important scientific achievements of the project are as follows. The equations mentioned play a central role in Diphantine number theory. GYŐRY, together with Evertse in 2017 resp. 2022 published the first comprehensive monographs in Cambridge on discriminant and index eqations and their applications, resp. on the extension of the effective theory of Diophantine equations over number fields to the finitely generated case, developed by the authors. GAÁL in 2019 published an extended version of his earlier book on the numerical determination of power integral bases. The books contain many earlier results and some new ones of the authors. BÉRCZES made effective some remarkable theorems of Lang and Liardet on generalized unit equations over finitely generated domains. Under a natural conjecture, HAJDU and Bertók worked out an efficient algorithm for solving concrete S-unit equations in several unknowns. HAJDU and TENGELY established a pioneer result on powers in arithmetic progressions. PINK and Miyazaki obtained sharp and definitive bounds for the number of solutions of some famous specific unit equations.
