A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

Jól működő úthálózat, a hadsereg szükségleteit megbízhatóan kielégítő mezőgazdasági háttér (gazdag termőföldek kiterjedt csatornarendszerrel), termelést és begyűjtést megbízhatóan szervező adminisztratív elit.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A program eredményeképpen a nemzetközi kutatással online formában megosztott szabad hozzáférésű térinformatikai adatbázis jönne létre, az Asszír Birodalom területi infrastruktúrájának adataival.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The primary aim of the research is to explore the internal structures of the Neo-Assyrian Empire by relying on a set of interdisciplinary approaches with a strong focus on spatiality. It seeks to unite written sources (political, administrative, and judicial), archaeological sources, and sources pertaining to the broader environment. It conflates the non-georeferenced system of the people known from written sources with the architectural, settlement historical, and environmental data stored in a uniform geoinformatical system. Reaching beyond the unidimensional perspective outlined in previous studies – in which the focus of the investigation of the inner structure of the empire was on the relations of the king, the officials, and the subjugated territories – the participants of the program concentrate on the economic infrastructure (canal and road systems, arable lands, production capacity) and interpersonal interactions (that is, interactions among households) as well. In the latter case, we will rely on the methodology of the research of social networks. Besides the written sources, special importance is attached to the analysis of the cylinder seals of the officials. Further emphasis will be laid on the comparison of the Neo-Assyrian political and economic structure with relations of other ancient Mesopotamian powers.
The project will result in the following findings: a geoinformatical database of the Assyrian Empire shared on an online platform, a monograph of the reconstruction of the territorial administration and the economic infrastructure of the empire, and a catalogue of the Neo-Assyrian cylinder seals with known provenance.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The starting hypothesis behind the research that the political success of the Assyrian Empire was not only thanks to its military power, but also due to its well-organized economic and political infrastructure: well-kept road system, a stable agricultural background meeting the demands of the army (arable lands and good canal systems), an administrative elite responsible for production and allocation. The framework in which agricultural production took place is still relatively unknown today; however, it can be rightly assumed that households of varying sizes (the public ones – for example, palaces and temples –, small households, and the big households of officials and traders) played an equally important role.
In our program, we have decided to work along the lines of an interdisciplinary approach, according to which geoinformatics can be used to unite the various written, archaeological, and environmental sources. Setting up a geoinformatical database is of primary importance: with the help of satellite images, archaeological data and written sources, a 3D relief map will be used, upon which the ancient canal and road systems, and settlement patterns will be reconstructed.
The analysis of the network of the imperial administration will be made on the basis of written sources, the cylinder seals, and a prosopographical database. It is hoped that based on the findings of the databases set up in the process, it will be possible to reconstruct the infrastructure of the Assyrian Empire from a novel point of view.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

The Neo-Assyrian Empire was one of the most important powers of the Ancient Near East, and – in an indirect manner – through the Hellenistic empires, it played a significant role in establishing the structural frameworks of the Roman Empire. Regardless of its overall importance and despite the fact that we have come into possession of tens of thousands of cuneiform sources, research at large is unaware of their contexts, and only fragmented information has so far been culled. It is for this reason that relatively limited information is known about the certain subsystems of the Assyrian Empire: its economies, societies, settlement patterns, and administrative structures.
Only innovative approaches can be utilized to change the present situation; therefore, the program focuses on the uniform geoinformatical analysis of the various data, and it seeks to conflate this with the non-georeferenced network of people known from the written sources. This will help us better understand how the operations of the subsystems of the Assyrian Empire happened.
As a result of the project an open access geoinformatical database of the Assyrian Empire will come into existence, which will be shared with the international research in an online platform. This unique enterprise would meet with significant scientific response and will form the basis of further researches.
The first result of the database to be set up will be present the reconstruction of the territorial administration of the Neo-Assyrian Empire in what we plan to be a monograph written in English, which will bridge the gap among international researches.
It would also be beneficial for the program to create the catalogue of Neo-Assyrian cylinder seals with known provenance, which will form a useful database for future historical, philological, archaeological, and art historical research.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

In ancient times, the empire was the only structural form that enabled the socio-economic integration of larger territories. One of mankind’s most important and most successful powers was the Assyrian Empire, which served as a model for future powers. The accurate description of its inner operations is of primary importance for the understanding of the organization of complex societies. One key question to be addressed is how the imperial elite was able to bind together the vast empire. Today we are no longer interested in the description of the Empire as a despotic power, and we have begun to sketch the model of a more sophisticated interpersonal network.
The research sets out to reconstruct the well-organized economic and political infrastructure, which helped the Assyrian Empire become exceedingly successful. It was not only sufficient to conquer the territories, but they were also to be maintained. The project aims to set up a geoinformatical database that explores the economic and social bases of the Empire in relation to its spatial dimensions. It reconstructs the road and canal systems, the settlement patterns, and its relations to the environment and arable lands based on satellite images and archaeological investigations.
It also attempts to outline the network of connections of the administrative elite, and it will describe its social network, which presented the unifying texture of the Empire.

A kutatás során a munkatervben vállaltak szerint megtörtén a térinformatikai rendszer kiépítéséhez szükséges adatok összegyűjtése: a korábbi terepbejárások vaskori tellekre vonatkozó adatainak kigyűjtése, a dombok méretkategóriájának és morfológiai jegyeinek meghatározása; továbbá a korábban ásatásokkal kutatott települések szakirodalmi adatainak összegyűjtése, méretkategóriájuk és funkciójuk megállapítása. Az elkészült az a térinformatikai módszertan és a hozzá tartozó nagy felbontású térkép, amelyek segítségével lehetőség nyílik mindazon térbeli hálózatok rekonstrukciójára, amelyek segítségével megismerhetjük az Újasszír Birodalom, illetve máskorábbi és későbbi közel-keleti állami társadalmak térbeli elrendeződésének olyan kulcsfontosságú aspektusait, mint a következők: Az OTKA kutatással párhuzamosan folyó iraqi kurdisztáni ásatások ugyanennek a modellnek a gyakorlati , terepmunkával megvalósítottoldalát hivatottak bemutatni. Grd-i Tle általunk feltárandó lelőhelye (a negyedik évad következik) egy magas hegyláncokkal körülvettsíkság közepén, uralkodó lelőhely, a síkság egykori közigazgatási központja, tartományi székhelye lehetett. A lelőhely környezetében, az egész síkságon szeretnénk modellünket megvalósítani.

During our research project we have successfully accomplished those studies and collected all the data, which were necessary for the study of the Mesopotamian settlement pattern and settlement hierarchy. The basic map provides opportunity to visualize the settlement pattern, the four or five levels settlement hierarchy, and the network of roads connecting the settlements, The matrix evolving from these archaeological databases can be supplemented by those written (cuneiform) sources, which provide further information about the settlement hierarchy of the Assyrian Empire and its 85 provinces. It has to be emphasized that this research was complemented by a fieldwork, the archaeological expedition of the principal researchers of the OTKA research project, which provided a unique opportunity to test the ideas on the field. After the end of the project we met within the framework of a workshop with those colleagues, who are active on the field in the inmediate vicinity of our excavation, in Iraqi Kurdistan. The title of the workshop was as follows: The Archaeology of the Raparin Region of Iraqi Kurdistan: A Review of Results from the Field and the Directions of the Further Research”. The participants included John MacGinnis (British Museum), Tim Boaz Bruun Skuldbøl (Copenhagen), and Janoscha Kreppner (Münster). During the period of our research project the participants published 3 books, 22 foreign language, 14 Hungarian language publications and delivered 33 lectures.
