A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

Mindkét esetben a vizsgálatok bemenő adata a megfelelően megválasztott talajmozgás-függvény.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A következő eredményeket várjuk a projekttől:
• a billegő mechanizmus viselkedését pontosabban meg fogjuk érteni,
• a Housner-féle ütközési modellt tovább fogjuk fejleszteni

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Történeti szerkezeteink érzékenyek a földrengési hatásra. Magyarországon számos olyan templom épült az elmúlt évszázadokban, amelyekben a boltozatok boltívekre hordják terheiket. Ezen épületek közül sok szenvedett komoly sérülést valamely földrengés kipattanásakor. Példaként említhető az 1956-ban, a dunaharaszti földrengés során beomlott taksonyi templom.

Ezen szerkezetekkel kapcsolatos bizonytalanságok (boltívek törése, az elemek ütközése, az altalaj rétegződésének hatása, a jövőbeli ismeretlen földrengési gerjesztés milyensége) miatt nincs jól használható eljárás a földrengéssel szembeni megfelelőségük igazolására.

Jóllehet, egy évtizeddel ezelőtt Magyarországon a szerkezeteket nem kellett földrengésre méretezni, manapság a szabvány előírja ennek teljesülését. Egy új, innovatív szerkezeti rendszer, amely képes hatékonyan felvenni a földrengési hatásból származó terheket a billegő fal. Érdekes módon, mivel a vizsgálat egyik kulcsfontosságú része a billegés közben bekövetkező ütközési hatás modellezése, ezen szerkezetek mechanikai szempontból rokonok a falazott boltívek problematikájával.

Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

Structures in Hungary were rarely designed for seismic events in the past, despite of the fact that moderate earthquakes may hit the country. In Hungary several churches were built in the XII – XIX centuries with masonry vaults supported by arches. Many of them were severely damaged by earthquakes. Historical structures should be evaluated for seismic events, new structures must be designed for earthquakes. A new, innovative structure to carry the seismic load is the rocking shear wall. The response of masonry arches and shear walls with rocking mechanisms for base excitation has an important common feature. In both cases the impact of the blocks plays a very important role. The response due to impact (or rocking) is fundamentally different from the behaviour of traditional engineering structures which develop plastic hinges. Consequently, in most of the cases time history analyses must be performed. This requires the proper choice of ground motion records.
It is well-known that the outcome of a time history analysis may heavily depend on the choice of the record, which results in general scepticism about the reliability of the methodology.
In the response of shear walls and in the stability of arches and vaults the deformability of soil plays an important role. In common engineering practice this effect is either neglected or it is taken into account by assuming elastic support at the foundation, which may lead to very conservative or unconservative design.
Our aim is to develop a model and a tool to nonlinearly analyse rocking mechanism such as arches and rocking shear walls in interaction with the foundation and the soil.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

According to the above description our research focuses on four key areas:
• seismic assessment of arches and vaults,
• seismic assessment of rocking shear walls,
• development of a reliable ground motion record selection procedure, and
• investigation of the soil-structure interaction (SSI).
These topics – one by one – are important research areas, and, in addition may offer a complex approach to tackle the problem of rocking mechanisms.
Several researchers investigated the problem of rocking mechanism of masonry arches, and provided “rocking spectra” for designers. However, their approach contains the following shortcomings: the location of the impact is assumed to be unchanged, and the classical Housner model is used, which may be unconservative.
The advantages of rocking shear walls are the self-centering effect achieved by post tensioning. Based on large scale experiments the basic behaviour of rocking walls was explored and simplified models were developed, however important effects were not investigated: the mechanically consistent modelling of impact, the applicability of the modal response spectrum analysis for these highly nonlinear structures, the effect of (dissipative) connections between the shear wall and the building.
In both cases an important input of the analysis is a set of properly chosen ground motion records. However, there is no reliable methodology available to select a set of records that describes the characteristic seismic hazard for a specific structure at a pre-defined site.
The effect of complex soil-structure interaction for these structures has not been explored yet.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

It is expected that
• the behaviour of rocking mechanisms will be better understood,
• Housner’s model will be improved,
• models will be developed and verified, which are based on mechanically consistent assumptions,
• the effect of SSI – which has not been investigated for these kind of structures yet – will be explored, and also
• the effect of ground motion record selection will be investigated, and a reliable methodology to obtain site and structure specific records for nonlinear dynamic analyses will be developed.
These will enable us to develop nonlinear models and procedures to evaluate both masonry arches and rocking shear walls. These procedures will serve as useful tools for seismic performance assessment and for developing approximate methods (such as response spectra) for the analysis of structures.
It is expected that SSI plays and important role in the modelling of both arches and rocking shear walls, which will be investigated.
Findings regarding ground motion record selection will provide a better understanding of the sensitivity of probabilistic seismic performance assessment results to the applied selection methodology.
The resulting advanced modelling capabilities of seismic demand and structural capacity would reduce the high level of conservatism in seismic design, and hence it can be economically beneficial.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

Historical masonry buildings are vulnerable to earthquakes. In Hungary several churches were built in the XII – XIX centuries with vaults supported by arches, many of them were severely damaged by moderate ground motions. For example, in 1956 the vaults of a baroque church in Taksony were collapsed by the Dunaharaszti earthquake.
Because of the relatively uncertain behaviour of these structures (cracking of the arches, impacts of the elements, influence of the supporting soil layers, unknown ground motion records in the future) there are no reliable methods available to investigate them for earthquakes. Our goal is to develop a model, and also a design tool which will enable us to analyse arches and vaults, and to determine whether they are safe.
Although a decade ago structures were not designed for seismic events in Hungary, today it is known that new structures must be designed for earthquakes. A new, innovative structure to carry the seismic load is the reinforced concrete wall, which may rock at one or more locations. Interestingly, because the key of the analysis is the impact at the rocking interfaces the modelling of these structures is very similar to that of masonry arches. Our goal is to develop (and verify) a model, and to introduce design methods which lead to more economical and safer structures.
We will also tackle the problem of selecting ground motion records that properly represent a future, unknown earthquake. These can be acceptable inputs of the analyses, and hence increase the reliability of our design.

Final report

Új modellt fejlesztettünk a merev blokkokból álló rendszerek számítására.

A new model was developed for the analysis of multiblock systems. The basic building block of the model is the improvement of Housner’s rocking model, where we could give a physical explanation why this classical model underpredicts the motion of the blocks. Based on the numerical results of our model and on our experiments a new design methodology was developed for multiblock columns and arches. We also showed that the classical approaches of modelling the soil structure interaction can be very inaccurate under certain parameter ranges, and a brand new model was developed, which is based on an axially restrained infinite bar. The novelty of the model is that it can take into account the so called “radiation damping” directly, which was missing in the classical models. A surprising application of this model is the vibration control of floors, where radiation damping also plays an essential role.
