A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Pályázatunk klasszikus pulzáló változócsillagok újonnan felfedezett és csak a legújabb űrfotometriai technológiának köszönhetően vizsgálható folyamatainak módszeres tanulmányozását célozza. RR Lyrae és cefeida csillagok általunk korábban felfedezett és vizsgált rezonanciái, modulációja és módus-kölcsönhatásai mellett fősorozati, gamma Doradus - delta Scuti hibrid változócsillagok eredetét és a kettősség pulzációra gyakorolt hatását vizsgáljuk. Ehhez elsősorban általunk javasolt, a Kepler (K2), MOST űrtávcsövek megfigyelési programjaiból származó, ultrapontos és folyamatos adatsorokat vizsgálunk, de fejlett idő-frekvencia- és káosz kimutatására alkalmas matematikai módszereket, a Florida-Budapest numerikus hidrodinamikai pulzációs kódot és az amplitúdóegyenlet formalizmust is alkalmazzuk. A kutatástól a pulzáló változócsillagok új jelenségeinek, illetve fejlődésének jobb megértését, és e hatásoknak a kozmikus távolságskála kalibrálására gyakorolt szisztematikus hatásainak feltárását várjuk. Szabó Róbert vezető szerepet játszik a 600 tagot számláló Kepler Asztroszeizmológiai Tudományos Konzorcium RR Lyrae és cefeida munkacsoportjának koordinálásában. Ez a pályázat lehetővé teszi, hogy futamideje során a NASA 2017-ben induló TESS exobolygó-kereső missziójában is hasonló szerepet vállaljunk. Célunkat egyedülálló szakembergárda segíti: a felhalmozott űrfotometriai és spektroszkópiai tudásbázisra, a Keplerben betöltött vezető szerepünkre, illetve a csillagpulzáció numerikus modellezésében szerzett több évtizedes tapasztalatunkra építhetünk. Ezek alkalmazása világszínvonalú hozzájárulást tesz lehetővé az adott tudományterületen.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

A Kepler-űrtávcső nagyszámú hibrid, azaz egyidejűleg gamma Doradus és delta Scuti jellegű, nemradiális g- illetve p-módusokat is mutató fősorozati csillagot talált.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

Blazskó-effektus) is közelebb vihet. Célunk a

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

A pulzáló változócsillagok kozmikus távolságmérésre is kitűnően használhatók. Kutatásunk a csillagok fejlődésének, működésének, energiatermelésének jobb megértése mellett, azok bolygóin található fizikai viszonyokat is segít jobban megérteni. A közös tömegközéppont körül keringő csillagpárokban az egyik csillagban kialakuló rezgéseket a kettős másik tagja befolyásolja, akár gerjesztheti is, ez pedig – a megkopogtatott dinnyéhez hasonló módon – a csillag belső szerkezetéről hordoz más módon elérhetetlen információt. Kutatásunk az űrtávcsöves missziókban való részvétel mellett az új, előkészületben levő missziókhoz való kapcsolódást is elősegíti. Ez különösen fontos abból a szempontból, hogy Magyarország hónapokon belül teljes jogú tagként csatlakozik az Európai Űrügynökséghez, és ezért a magas szinten való bekapcsolódás a tudományos programokba űripari megrendeléseket, forintosítható hasznot is hozhat hazánknak. Témavezető az ESA következő bolygókereső missziójának (PLATO) a legmagasabb döntéshozó testületébe (Board) kapott meghívást.
Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

We aim at studying recently discovered nonlinear dynamical phenomena of classical pulsating variable stars. This project is enabled by the achievements of the latest space photometric technology. We investigate resonances, modulation and mode interaction of RR Lyrae stars and Cepheids – all discovered by our group recently, the origin of gamma Doradus – delta Scuti hybrids, as well as effects of binarity on pulsation. For our work we use ultra-precise and continuously sampled space photometric data from the Kepler (K2) and MOST space telescopes – stemming from our approved telescope time applications, state-of-the-art time-frequency and chaos detection methods, the Florida-Budapest hydrodynamical pulsation code and the amplitude equation formalism. We expect a better understanding of the new phenomena and the evolution of pulsating variable stars, as well as the exploration of these systematic effects on the calibration of the cosmic distance scale. The principal investigator has been the leader of the Cepheid and RR Lyrae Working Group in the Kepler Asteroseismic Science Consortium. This proposal enables us to play a similar role in NASA's TESS exoplanet-hunter mission, which is scheduled to launch in 2017. The proposed research is backed up by an outstanding team of scientists: we exploit our expertise in space photometry and spectroscopy, our leading role in the Kepler mission, and the team's decades-long experience in numerical modelling of stellar pulsation. This synergy places our research in the forefront of present-day astrophysical studies.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

We have found surprising nonlinear dynamical phenomena in classical pulsating variable stars – objects that used to thought of as excellent cosmic distance indicators. Our project's goals include the better understanding, quantitative description and connection of these phenomena with the century-old Blazhko-problem, which is the frequently seen amplitude and phase modulation in RR Lyrae stars. We intend to correlate the occurrence rate of these phenomena with other stellar parameters (age, metallicity, galactic position). In order to do that we gradually build a unique database enabled by our approved and ongoing K2 projects. Thus we make a significant step toward the understanding of these phenomena and their interrelation, and we can also test the limits of applicability of Cepheids and RR Lyrae stars in cosmic distance measurements. Kepler space telescope has found a large number of hybrid stars, i.e. Main-sequence pulsators that exhibit gamma Doradus and delta Scuti nonradial g- and p-mode pulsations simultaneously. We hypothesize that some or most of the low frequency variations may stem from effects of binarity, rotation or other non-pulsational or instrumental effects. To test this possibility, we analyze the available space data, and complement them with spectroscopic measurements, to assess a reliable catalog of hybrid stars. This will form a touchstone for future theoretical studies. The companion in a binary system may have significant effect on its sibling: tidal effects may excite or damp oscillations carrying fundamental information about stellar structure, which led to the rise of tidal seismology. We plan to investigate such systems.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

Pulsating variable stars are unique laboratories featuring dynamical phenomena that can rarely be found in Nature or in engineering practice. Our project may bring us closer to the solution of century-old problems, like the Blazhko-effect. Besides explanation and deeper understanding of phenomena that can be observed only from space, our goal is to systematically catalog and publish them, as well. This collection will be considered a reference work for later theoretical studies, before three-dimensional pulsational hydrocodes will have become wide-spread. The data to carry out this ambitious goal are provided by space photometric measurements. Our group has achieved a leading role in obtaining, reducing and interpreting these data. The PI leads the relevant working group of KASC, the participants are team members of approved Kepler and K2 telescope time proposals. These proposals ensure that we can build a unique, publicly available Kepler/K2 Cepheid and RR Lyrae observational database, which will form the base of an unrivalled control sample for Galactic structure and evolutionary studies. In the same vein, this 'golden sample' will be particularly useful for planning and sniffing through the large databases of future large sky surveys (like GAIA and LSST). Better understanding of main-sequence single or binary stars will facilitate learning the physics, activity, and evolution of planetary host stars which is in turn crucial to fully comprehend planetary habitability criteria. Our aim is to cement the leading role of our group in K2 and give birth to such a concentration of know-how and expertise that can attract guest professors and students from around the world, in order to elevate the visibility of scientific activities in Hungary. The outlined work facilitates our participation in future NASA (TESS 2017) and ESA (PLATO 2024) space photometric missions. The PI was already elected to represent Hungary at the highest level in PLATO. During the project we plan to organize an international conference.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

Our proposal aims at studying stars that feature observable light variations caused by oscillations, that reveal information about their interior and evolution. These oscillations can interact in an intricate way and comprehending these interactions is an important goal of our work. Pulsating variable stars are excellent cosmic distance indicators, as well. To get a handle on these phenomena we use extremely precise space measurements, ground-based follow-up observations and computer simulations. The proposing team has been a leader in several international cutting-edge research projects with NASA's Kepler (and later K2) missions. This project aims at fostering this leading role. Besides learning about the dynamics of stellar interiors, energy production and evolution, our research project helps to shed light on the physical properties on the planets of these stars. In binary stars, where both components orbit the common center of mass, one component may affect – excite or even damp – the oscillations in the other star. This offers a unique way to gain information about the stellar interior, just as knocking on a melon's rind reveals its inner conditions. This project strengthens our participation in astrophysics space missions, and aids in joining new ones already in their preparatory phase. This is especially important and timely, since Hungary will become a full member of the European Space Agency within a few months, therefore participating in scientific projects will generate space industrial contracts, hence profit for the country. The PI has been invited to serve at the highest governing committee (Board) of PLATO, ESA's next exoplanet-hunting mission.

Results in English
We have been playing a leading role in investigating dynamical phenomena in classical pulsating variable stars using the Kepler/K2 and TESS space photometric missions and the Gaia astrometric data. Studying these systems helps us to improve the cosmic distance ladder, our understanding of stellar structure and evolution, as well as the structure and formation of the Milky Way Galaxy. We developed a new photometric method to obtain precise photometric data for high-amplitude pulsating variable stars with K2. We investigated the small amplitude variations in RR Lyrae stars at an unprecedented detail. Most of these variations were discovered by our group. We discovered new dynamical phenomena (modulation, period doubling) in classical and Type-II Cepheids. We proposed a plausible explanation for the RVb type light variations by assuming a circumbinary dusty disk. We searched binary companions around gamma Doradus / delta Scuti hybrid main-sequence pulsators. Besides establishing the occurrence rate (27%), we analyzed one such system (KIC 5709664) discovered by our group in great detail. The international standing of our research team is demonstrated by the RR Lyrae and Cepheid conference we organized in October, 2015 in Visegrád with 65 participants. This event evolved to a prestigious biannual conference series of the subfield (September 2017: Niepolomice, Poland, October 2019: Cloudcroft, NM, USA).
