A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Ebben a témakörben is több eredményünk összetettebb modellekre való kiterjesztési lehetősége körvonalazódik.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

Célunk egyrészt a monoton típusú operátorok elméletének segítségével a megoldások létezésére vonatkozó elégséges feltételek megfogalmazása.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A kvantummechanikában alapvető szerepet töltenek be a különböző sajátérték-feladatok, amelyeknek a folytonos esetben a variációszámítás keretein belül jól kidolgozott elmélete van. Kutatásunkban ezen eredményeknek bizonyos nem sima esetekre való kiterjesztése a célunk, ezzel bővítve az alkalmazhatóság körét. Nemlokális függést tartalmazó differenciálegyenletek és rendszerek különféle biológiai, kémiai, mérnöki alkalmazásban fordulnak elő. A monoton típusú operátorok elmélete számos ilyen típusú egyenlet és rendszer megoldhatósági kérdéseiben alkalmazható, kutatásunkban ezeket az eredményeket terjesztjük ki hiperbolikus funkcionál-differenciál egyenletekre.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The aim of our research is to continue and widen our previous studies in the field of network processes and partial differential equations and to extend the results that we have achieved so far. We have made the first steps recently in the new field of studying the controllability of network processes. This can be extended to the control of different types of mean-field equations and enables us to relate the control of the mean-field equation to that of the real stochastic process. Network processes are described by Markov chains with extremely large state space, hence approximating partial differential equations play an important role in their study. The key theoretical question is to estimate the accuracy of the approximation. We plan to extend our existing results in this field to more sophisticated network models. For cellular neural networks we study metastable oscillations that have been widely studied in neuroscience. They are solutions that show periodic-like behavior for long time, but finally tend to steady state. We apply the theory of monotone dynamical systems and spectral methods to their mathematical investigation. Another field of our research is functional partial differential equations containing non-local terms and elliptic eigenvalue problems with non-smooth terms. The first one will be studied by applying the theory of monotone operators, while for the second we will use variational methods, with emphasis on the mountain pass theorem, to describe critical points of functionals. In both directions we have opportunity to extend our previous theoretical results to cases that are applicable in more realistic situations.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The two main directions of our research are processes on complex networks and partial differential equations. Concerning network processes we focus on their controllability that can be simply illustrated by epidemic propagation as follows. How can the epidemic be eradicated via cutting edges of the network and keeping the graph well-connected at the same time. In the course of studying cellular neural networks our main goal is to understand how metastable oscillations occur in the system. These are solutions that seem to be periodic for a long time, but they tend to a steady state finally. Concerning partial differential equations we deal with parabolic and hyperbolic equations occurring in different applications and containing non-local terms, such as time-dependent delay or the integral of the unknown function. We are aiming at finding sufficient conditions for the existence of a solution. On the other hand we investigate the solvability of variational inequalities and elliptic eigenvalue problems. This will be carried out by studying the critical points of energy functionals with non-smooth terms. As a link between the two main directions of our research we deal with partial differential equations that arise as approximations of network processes. The goal is to estimate the accuracy of the approximation and to understand how the properties of the network process are inherited by the approximating partial differential equations.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

We are dealing with notable mathematical problems in both directions of our research that are significant from the theoretical and practical point of view. The controllability of complex networks has been studied mostly as controllability of graphs. In our research a process is also evolving on the network and the aim is to control the system to a target state, which is not only a great challenge from the theoretical point of view, but it is also an extraordinarily important question for the applications (e.g. to stop the spread of an epidemic). In cellular neural networks metastable oscillations have been observed numerically and experimentally, however they have been hardly studied theoretically. The application of sophisticated mathematical tools to their investigation may have great importance from the neuroscience point of view. Eigenvalue problems play an important role in quantum mechanics and they have a well-developed theory for the continuous counterpart in the framework of the calculus of variations. We are aiming at extending the known results to the non-smooth case that enables us to increase their applicability. Partial differential equations containing non-local terms occur in several applications in biology, chemistry and engineering science. The theory of monotone operators has been successfully applied to prove existence results for parabolic equations. Our goal is to extend our existing results to hyperbolic functional differential equations.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

Complex systems, consisting of many components connected in a possibly complicated structure arise in many areas of science, e.g. in physics, engineering, chemistry or biology. As illustrative examples we can mention the metabolic network of a cell, the internet or different social networks. Metastable behavior in cellular neural networks plays important role in describing processes of the brain. In the focus of our research there are processes on networks such as the spread of an epidemic on a social network or the propagation of information on the internet. These processes can be described by differential equations, the theoretical investigation of which uses several sophisticated tools of mathematics. Hence our research aims at proving the existence of solutions of these equations and characterizing their qualitative properties. Moreover, we deal with the accuracy of different approximating equations compared to the real process. A significant question concerning network processes is their controllability, e.g. how the structure of a network has to be changed in order to eradicate an epidemic, while keeping the network well-connected. These investigations are strongly based on computer simulations, on which great emphasis will be put in our research.

Hálózati folyamatokat leíró differenciálegyenletekkel kapcsolatos munkánk fő célja olyan közelítő egyenletek levezetése és vizsgálata, melyek segítségével a hálózaton zajló folyamat vizsgálható. Kutatásaink során foglalkoztunk a közelítések pontosságának becslésével, a statikus gráfon ismert eredmények kiterjesztésével adaptív hálózatok esetére (ekkor a gráf is változik a folyamat során), valamint a hálózati folyamat vezérlésével. Celluláris neurális hálózatokban metastabil oszcillációk létrejöttét tanulmányoztuk a monoton dinamikai rendszerek eszközeinek segítségével. Nemfolytonos tagokat tartalmazó sajátérték-feladatok megoldhatóságát tanulmányoztuk funkcionálok kritikus pontjaival összefüggésben a variációszámítás eszköztárának segítségével.

The research was carried out according to the research plan in the following directions. The aim of our research concerning differential equations describing network processes was to derive and study approximating models, in order to investigate the properties of the process. We derived estimates for the accuracy of the approximations, extended the known results for static graphs to adaptive networks (when the network is also changing during the process) and studied the controllability of epidemic propagation on networks. For cellular neural networks we studied metastable oscillations that have been widely studied in neuroscience. They are solutions that show periodic-like behavior for long time, but finally tend to steady state. We applied the theory of monotone dynamical systems and spectral methods to their mathematical investigation. The main topic of our research, related to partial functional differential equations, were non-linear time dependent functional differential equations and systems containing non-local terms, e.g. the integral of the unknown function, both in the parabolic and hyperbolic case. We proved the existence of the global solution in finite and infinite time intervals in several cases and verified the boundedness of the solutions and their stability. Elliptic eigenvalue problems with non-smooth terms were studied by applying variational methods, with emphasis on the mountain pass theorem, to describe critical points of functionals.
