A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A tervezett kutatás célja Magyarország egyik legjelentősebb lelőhelye, Brigetio kutatási eredményeinek átfogó feldolgozása egy monográfia keretében. A projekt egyik fő célkitűzése a Szőny-Vásártéren az elmúlt 25 évben végzett ásatások feldolgozása, emellett új kutatási módszerekkel történő további vizsgálatok egyaránt. A projekt során összeállítjuk a korábban Brigetióban végzett összes régészeti kutatás átfogó adatbázisát. A brigetiói legiotáborban a principia körzetében ásatásokat tervezünk, a legiotábor pontos kronológiájának megállapítása céljából. A projekt egyik fő célja egy átfogó topográfiai térkép elkészítése Brigetióról. A régi ásatási anyag feldolgozása és az új rombolásmentes régészeti módszerekkel való kutatás jól illeszkedik a magyarországi limes világörökségi helyszínné válását célzó folyamatba, aminek Brigetio az egyik kulcsfontosságú helyszíne.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A projekt számos, a későbbi kutatások számára is fontos eredményt hozhat egyrészt Brigetio római korával kapcsolatban, másrészt a vizsgálati módszerek más helyen történő alkalmazhatóságának szempontjából. Brigetio településszerkezetének, a város kronológiájának, gazdasági-kereskedelmi kapcsolatrendszerének megismerése kulcsfontosságú nemcsak Pannonia, hanem a Római Birodalom más területeinek kutatásával kapcsolatban is. A projekt eredményeképpen létrejövő monográfia nemcsak a kutatók számára lesz kiemelkedő fontosságú munka, hanem az egyetemi oktatásba is jól beépíthető lesz. Brigetio a magyarországi limes világörökségi helyszínné válását célzó folyamat egyik kulcsfontosságú helyszíne, a folyamat sikere esetén a tábor és a katonaváros területén végzett kutatások eredményei fontos részét fogják képezni a nagyközönség számára elkészítendő háttéranyagoknak.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The aim of the planned project is a comprehensive monograph based on the results of the research of Roman Brigetio, one of the most important sites in Hungary. One of the main aims of the project is the processing of the excavation material of the last 25 years from the site Szőny-Vásártér, as well as new analyses with new methods applied. During the project, we will prepare the database of previous archaeological interventions in Brigetio. With the processing of the finds of Szőny-Vásártér, the topography, settlement structure, building periods and chronology of the civil town can be examined. One of the most important among new research methods is the geophysical prospection with a new radar technique, which allows us higher speed and much larger surveyable area. These surveys will be accomplished in the territory of the civil town, the canabae and the fortress as well. Similarly important method is the low altitude aerial photography, which is suitable for making photos, micro-terrain and image-based 3D models. Besides this, we will continue the conventional aerial photography in the surroundings of Brigetio. The precise localization of several buildings of key importance, e.g. the two amphitheatres of Brigetio is among our plans. We will conduct excavations in the legionary fortress, in the vicinity of the principia, to establish the chronology of the fortress. One of the main aims of the project is creating a comprehensive topographical map of Brigetio. The processing of the old excavation data and the use of non-destructive methods suits well in the process aiming to declare the Hungarian Danube Limes as a World Heritage Site, with Brigetio as one of the key places.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

Although Brigetio is one of the most important Roman sites in Hungary, its research is less advanced comparing with other sites, e.g. Aquincum or Savaria. One of the most important parts of the settlement is the centre of the civil town, the site Szőny-Vásártér. The systematic processing of the excavation material of 25 years and the planned geophysical surveys can answer several questions about settlement history and chronology. The localization of the presumed civil amphitheatre could solve an old problem of the research. In the legionary fortress, we could localize the courtyard of the principia in 2015, however, its chronology is still unclear. Excavations and geophysical surveys at the site Szőny-MOL-Kiskertek will aiming to solve this problem. The canabae is the largest among the three settlement parts, from where we have the most geophysical and aerial photographical data. The definition of the structure and exact area of the canabae is a task of the new research, as well as the precise localization of the military amphitheatre. The project would answer such questions as the foundation and the end of the civil town and the legionary fortress, and the relation of the three settlement parts to each other. The project aims at solving important methodological questions, as the complementary application of the results from conventional and low altitude aerial photography, ground penetrating radar surveys in areas which where earlier inaccessible, and the implementation of image-based 3D models and micro-terrain models.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

Our project can produce several important results, usable for the further research concerning the Roman Brigetio, as well as the aspects of applying the research methods in other areas. Informations on the settlement structure, chronology and economical connections of the city are of key importance not only in the research of Pannonia, but other areas of Roman Empire as well. The processing of the 25 years of the excavations at Szőny-Vásártér will produce such high amount of data, which importance in Hungary could only be compared with Aquincum. Our new informations on the settlement structure thanks to the geophysical and aerial surveys will define the direction for the further research in Brigetio of the next decades. In the last years, research in Brigetio reached new dimensions, which is strongly supported by the government and the residents of the city. Therefore, processing our research data and the application of new research methods are not only scientific, but also a public expectation. The monograph based on the results of our project will be of great importance among scholars and could also be implemented in the university courses. Brigetio is one of the key sites in the process aiming to declare the Hungarian Danube Limes as a World Heritage Site, therefore in case of success our research will act as a base of the background materials prepared for the public. This process would obviously benefit the development of tourism and cultural life in Komárom and its surroundings.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

The city of ancient Brigetio which situated in the territory of the present-day Komárom, having a legionary fortress, too, was one of the most important setllements in Pannonia besides Aquincum. Brigetio is one of the key places in the process aiming to declare the Hungarian Danube Limes as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Institue of Archaeological Sciences of the Eötvös Loránd University has been made researches in Brigetio in the last 25 years. The aim of the present project is writing a comprehensive monograph, which will summarize the result of previous research as well as apply new methods. Such new methods are the ground penetrating radar survey, the low altitude aerial photography by drones and different 3D models. These could produce results concerning the settlement structure and chronology of Brigetio which are of international importance. If the Hungarian Danube Limes – together with Brigetio - became a World Heritage Site, our results would be well integrated with the presentation of the site, would serve as a base for further research, which benefit the development of tourism and cultural life in Komárom and its surroundings.

Final report

Results in Hungarian
A szőny-vásártéri ásatások rétegtani, topográfiai, építéstörténeti feldolgozása, valamint a leletanyag kiértékelése rendkívül nagy jelentőségű mind a brigetiói kutatások számára, mind pedig a szélesebb tudományos publikum szempontjából. A terepbejárások, geofizikai felmérések és légifotózások rendkívül nagy mértékben bővítették, illetve helyenként megváltoztatták a Brigetio topográfiájával kapcsolatos korábbi ismereteinket és számos új topográfiai elemmel gazdagították azt. A legiotáborral kapcsolatban a geofizikai méréseknek köszönhetően sikerült annak belső struktúráját meghatározni.
Results in English
The stratigraphical, topographical and architectural processing of the excavations at the site Szőny-Vásártér is of great importance for future research in Brigetio and also for a wider scientific public. The field walkings, geophysical prospections and aerial archaeological surveys has extended and changed our previous knowledge about the topography of Brigetio. The inner structure of the legionary fortress of Brigetio can now be determined using the results of geophysical prospections. Most buildings of the legionary fortress can be localized which helps planning new excavations. The GPR surveys in the civil town has extended our knowledge on the insulation system of the civil town as well. Most important results of the excavation campaigns are the excavation of a Late Roman apsidal building where most probably Valentinian I met the Quadic envoys in 375 AD, the excavation of the porta praetoria and surrounding area and the localisation and partial excavation of the military bath. The most important result form the military town is the excavation of a new Roman cellar which fits well with the previously unearthed cellars from the civil town.
