A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A kutatási terület néhány elismert külföldi szakértője: J. Diblik (Csehország), S. Elaydi (USA), U. Krause (Németország), J. Pecaric (Horvátország) és H.-O. Walther (Németország).

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The subjects of our investigations are delay differential equations, difference equations, integral equations and
inequalities. We will study the qualitative properties of the solutions of linear and nonlinear delay differential and difference equations. We will focus on the asymptotic behavior, stability, boundedness and positivity of the solutions.
Since inequalities play a fundamental role in the qualitative theory of integral, differential and difference equations, we will continue our previous research in this direction with an emphasis on obtaining sharp estimates for Gronwall-Bellmann-Bihari type inequalities in the delayed case and refinements of different types of Jensen's inequality.
Another subject of our investigations is the study of the qualitative properties of the solutions of differential equations with state-dependent delays. We will investigate the differentiability of the solutions with respect to the parameters and the stability properties for several classes of state-dependent delay equations including neutral equations.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

In general, the solutions of a delay differential and a difference equation cannot be given explicitly, therefore it is important to describe their large time behavior. Another classical problem is to determine the relationship between the unknown solutions of a perturbed system of linear or nonlinear differential and difference equations and the known solutions of the corresponding unperturbed system. A further important question is whether it is possible to give verifiable algebraic conditions for the global asymptotic stability of the solutions of a nonlinear differential or difference equation.
Another problem is to obtain improvements of the classical Gronwall-Bellmann-Bihari and Jensen type inequalities which, among others, can be used to study the growth of the solutions of differential and difference equations.
Recently, the class of state-dependent delay equations has received much attention. One of the basic open problems is the higher-order smoothness of the solution semiflow. We plan to study a closely related question, namely the higher-order differentiability of the solutions with respect to the initial data and parameters.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

Delay differential and difference equations serve frequently as mathematical models in biology, engineering and economics. Many questions which arise in these applications are related to the qualitative properties of the solutions. The expected results of this project will include new stability criteria, asymptotic formulas, sufficient conditions for persistence and permanence of the solutions, improvements of classical differential and integral inequalities, and sufficient conditions for the differentiability of the solutions. The results will hopefully improve and extend the known results to larger classes of differential and difference equations and inequalities. As a possible application one can obtain new conclusions about various mathematical models arising in biology, engineering and economics.
Our research is related to the work of several research groups in Hungary (Bolyai Institute of University of Szeged, Mathematical Institute of Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest, Department of Applied Mechanics of Budapest University of Technology). Among the foreign experts in this research field we mention J. Diblik (Czech Republic), S. Elaydi (USA), U. Krause (Germany), J. Pecaric (Croatia) and H.-O. Walther (Germany).

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

In many biological, physical, chemical, technological and economical processes changing in time the speed of the change depends also on previous states. This can be modeled using delay differential and difference equations. Our aim in this project is to study the qualitative properties of the solutions of delay differential and difference equations with emphasis on the stability, large time behavior and smoothness of the solutions. As a possible application, the expected results can be used to obtain new conclusions for the above mentioned applications. Our results will be published in international journal of high standard, and will be presented at international conferences.
