Summary in Hungarian
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.

A kutatás homlokterében több modern porkohászati módszerrel előállított anyag áll: oxidfázissal erősített (oxide dispersion strengthened, ODS) acél, nagyentrópiájú ötvözet (High-entropy alloys, HEA), fémhabok, valamint nagynyomású csavarással tömörített alumínium. A projekt során az előállítási körülmények hatását vizsgálom a szerkezetre, mechanikai tulajdonságokra és termikus stabilitásra. A következő specifikus kérdésekre keresem a választ:

Mik a deformációs mechanizmusok?

Milyen a szerkezet változása a sugár mentén? Milyen a szerkezet termikus stabilitása?

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

Alkalmazásának feltétele a magas hőmérsékleti mechanikai tulajdonságok ismerete.

Ennek megfelelően a várható eredményekre a tudományos közéleten belül jelentős figyelem irányulhat. A kutatás eredményeit rangos folyóiratokban és konferenciákon tervezem közzétenni. A programba fiatal kutatókat és hallgatókat is bevonok, így a támogatás elősegítené a tudományos utánpótlás kinevelését is.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Emellett a porózus szerkezet a csonthoz való kötődést is segíti.
Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

There are numerous technological applications of powder metallurgy. The aim of the project is to study different materials processed by powder metallurgy, and investigate the microstructure and the mechanical performance. I investigate the correlation between the production conditions and the microstructure, as well as their influence on the mechanical properties. The thermal stability of the microstructure is also studied if the application field of the material makes it necessary. The microstructure is investigated by electron microscopy and X-ray line profile analysis. I plan to use and study several advanced powder metallurgy method.

1) During SPS, pulses of high current density are used to facilitate consolidation, thus the sintering time and temperature decrease, thereby much lower grain size can be achieved compared to conventional sintering methods. During the project I plan to consolidate high-entropy alloys and oxide dispersion strengthened steels with this method.

2) During freeze casting, a mixture of metallic powder, binder and water is chilled, then this frozen green body is lyophilized in a freeze dryer, and finally the lyophilized green body is sintered. Using this method metal foams can be produced which can be applied as medical implant because these foams are strong and their elastic modulus is similar to that of human bones.

3) High pressure torsion is a well known severe plastic deformation process, but the high pressure also enables this technique to consolidate metallic powders. Using HPT even if the powder is coarse-grained, the high imposed strain guarantees the achievement of an ultrafine grained microstructure in the compacted sample.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

Several advanced materials processed by powder metallurgy are in the foreground of the research: oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) steels, high-entropy alloys (HEA), metal foams and Al powder consolidated by HPT. I will study the correlation between the production conditions and the as-processed microstructures, as well as the effect of the structural features on the mechanical properties and thermal stability. The following specific questions are to be answered:

1) How do the consolidated microstructures of ODS steels depend on the type and quantity of the disperse oxide phase and circumstances of the production? How does the microstructure influence the high-temperature creep behavior and the thermal stability? What kind of changes in the microstructure of the oxide nanoparticles and the matrix can be occurred during high temperature deformation?

2) What are the differences between HEA processed by powder metallurgy and casting? What is the correlation between the microstructure and the mechanical properties? What type of dislocation structure is evolved during deformation? What are the deformation mechanisms at different temperatures?

3) How do the pore- and microstructure depend on the condition of the freeze casting process? How can the mechanical behavior of the foam be correlated to bulk materials? What kind of models describe the connections?

4) How does the number of HPT turns influence the microstructure in the case of consolidated Al? What kind of changes in the microstructure can be measured along the radius? What is the thermal stability of the sample?

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

The aim of the project is to study the influence of the processing conditions on the microstructure and mechanical properties of advanced materials manufactured by different powder metallurgy methods.

In the technology of the subsequent years, such as in next generation nuclear plants, a structural material with high strength and good stability even at high temperatures is necessary. The oxide dispersion strengthened steels fits these requirements. Therefore there is significant scientific and technical interest in these materials. Their application requires the knowledge of the high temperature mechanical properties. My studies may result in a better understanding of the creep behavior of ODS steels, and its correlation to the initial microstructure, as well as mapping the deformation mechanisms at high temperatures.

There is a vivid and continuously growing interest in HEAs. Preparing these materials by powder metallurgy methods is rare, as well as systematic investigation of HEAs by X-ray line profile analysis is almost missing from the literature, hence the new results most probably will draw significant attention from the scientific community, thereby improving the scientific authority of Hungary. From the scientific viewpoint I hope a deeper understanding of the correlation between the production circumstances and the microstructure. I hope to recognize the factors affecting the mechanical properties and the thermal stability.

Metal foams can be used in many application fields: from the car industry through medical implants to space research. The condition of the comprehensive application is to get acquainted with the connection of the producing circumstances and the microstructure as well as their effect on functional properties.

The know-how and the infrastructure for the microstructure study in my department are unique in Hungary, and even at international level. Therefore, the expected results of my investigations will be interesting for the scientific community. These results will be published in high-ranking journals and conferences. BSc, MSc and PhD students will be involved in the program, therefore the allowance would promote the education of young materials scientists.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

The goal of this project is to examine advanced materials produced by modern powder metallurgy methods. Many powder metallurgy technique are known. Their common property is that the initial powder is compacted to the required density under high pressure and/or at high temperature. The microstructure and the mechanical properties resulted by different consolidation techniques are investigated. In the course of the research I tried to choose powder metallurgy methods and materials which can play a significant role in future technology.

During SPS, pulses of high current density are used to facilitate consolidation, thus the sintering time and temperature decrease, and therefore a much lower grain size can be achieved compared to conventional sintering methods which results in a much higher strength of the material. For example, oxide dispersion strengthened steels can be produced by this method, which are promising candidates for structural materials in new generation nuclear plants.

During freeze casting, a mixture of metallic powder, binder and water is chilled, then the water is extracted from this frozen “green body” in a freeze dryer after the green body is sintered. Using this method metal foam can be produced which can have a significant role as medical implant because these foams are strong and their elastic modulus is similar to that of the human bones. Therefore the bones are not disencumbered, preventing osteoporosis in the bone around the implant. In addition, the porous structure facilitates the adhesion of the implant to the bone.
