Summary in Hungarian
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.

Az erősen kölcsönható, illetve magas hőmérsékletű rendszerekben a térelméleti perturbációszámítás megbízhatatlanná válik. Emiatt nem-perturbatív módszerekhez kell folyamodni, mint például a rácstérelmélet, illetve a kontinuum funkcionális módszerek, melyek a perturbációs sor részleges felösszegzését végzik. Mindkét iránynak megvannak azonban a maga problémái, nehézségei.

Ezért vizsgálni tervezem rácstérelméleti módszerekkel a különböző kontinuum közelítésekből adódó hibákat, miközben a kvartikus önkölcsönhatású skalár modellek régóta vita témáját képező fázisátalakulásának rendjét szeretném tisztázni. Emellett olyan kontinuum számolásokat tervezek, melyek nulla kémiai potenciál mellett a rácstérelméleti eredményekhez lesznek illeszve, de kiterjeszthetők nagy kémiai potenciálra is, akár a fázisdiagram kritikus végpontjáról is információt nyújtva.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A tervezett kutatási projektek segítenek megérteni a térelmélet alkalmazhatóságát fázisátalakulások leírásában. E fizikai jelenségek közelében köztudottan csődöt mond a perturbációszámítás, következésképpen fontos nem-perturbatív módszerket használnunk. Azonban a nem-perturbatív módszereknek is megvannak a maga korlátaik. Funkcionális módszerekkel olyan témát valósítanék meg, melyben a rácstérelmélettel nehezen vizsgálható területeken születnének eredmények, míg a tervezett rácstérelméleti számítások, önmagában való érdekességükön túl, segítenek a funkcionális módszerek pontosságának felmérésében.

Különösen ígéretes lehet a harmadik javasolt téma, melyben rácstérelmélet segítségével effektív elméletek generálásának lehetőségét vizsgálom majd. Ennek a témának rengeteg későbbi alkalmazása lehet sikeressége esetén. Minden rácstérelmélet által alapvetően vizsgálható, ám nehézségekkel járó területen nagyban leegyszerűsítené az eredményekhez vezető utat.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Kutatásomban a jelenleg ismert legelemibb részecskék viselkedését tanulmányozom.

Tervezett kutatásom mindkét irányvonalat magába foglalja, mind a nagy számítási kapacitási igényű numerikus módszerek felhasználását, mind a modellfejlesztést, illetve a fejlesztett modellek tesztjeit.
Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The phase diagram of strongly interacting matter received wide attention in the past decade. From the theoretical methods used in this topic, both lattice filed theory and continuum functional methods stand out. The two field theoretical method can be used to supplement each other, since their advantages and problems are rather different. I plan to deepen and exploit this connection in my application. The first one of my three suggested projects consists of studying the phase diagram using a continuum functional method which I know well from past experience. The second project is about researching the phase transition of the O(4) scalar model using lattice field theory. While this question has been studied for a long time, still complete understanding eludes us. This topic also provides a testing ground for continuum methods, while extending it to applications in light meson phenomenology is simple. In the third project, I try to establish a new application of lattice field theory, that is to set up effective models, which are then easily manageable analytically.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

In strongly interacting, and/or high temperature systems perturbation theory becomes unreliable. Therefore one needs to turn to non-perturbative methods, such as lattice field theory or continuum functional methods, the latter partially resumming the perturbative series. However, both directions possess their own problems, difficulties. The former have limitations at large baryo-chemical potential, which at the moment seem irresolvable. Methods falling in the latter category have the disadvantage of introducing hardly controllable errors originating from truncations, made necessary by the lack of exact solutions. Therefore the two methods can be used to supplement each other in a complementer fashion.

Hence I plan to study the errors originating from different continuum approximations using lattice field theory. With the same research I aim to clarify the long standing question of the order of the phase transition in scalar models with quartic self-interactions. I also plan continuum calculations which are reproducing lattice results at vanishing chemical potential, but can be expanded to large chemical potential values, offering information on the critical endpoint of the phase diagram. I aim to carry this research out in two approaches, using the so-called two-particle irreducible formalism and using an effective theory built up using lattice field theory.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

The planned research projects help understanding the applicability of field theory in the description of phase transitions. In the vicinity of such phenomena perturbation theory is known to fail, therefore it is important to use non-perturbative methods. However non-perturbative methods also possess their own limitations. I aim to explore these limitations, understand them better and therefore find solutions to the problems limiting the said methods. I plan to exploit the complementer nature of lattice field theory and continuum functional methods. Using functional methods I aim to realize a project which gives results in areas hardly reachable by lattice field theory, while the planned lattice calculations, in addition to being interesting on their own they help estimating the accuracy of continuum functional methods.

The third proposed project might be especially interesting, where I will investigate the possibilities of building up effective theories using lattice simulations. This project could have a large number of applications would it be successful. This method could be a short-cut in practically all areas where lattice field theory is applicable.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

In my field of research I study the behaviour of the most elementary particles known to us at the time. The particles building up everyday matter obey the laws of the so-called strong interactions. The understanding of these laws is one of the aims Large Hadron Collider (LHC) project of CERN. Imagine the several states of water which besides fluid are the solid ice and vapour which is a gas. Similarly to water the building blocks of matter around us also has several states of matter. These are only present at extremely high temperatures and/or densities. For example in the first fractions of seconds of the life of the Universe, in far away neutron stars, or as a matter of fact in the matter created in the LHC.

The models describing all these are only approximately solvable due to their complexity. Therefore we use supercomputers and continuous methodological developments in order to get closer to the understanding of elementary particles. My planned research involves both paths, the numerical computations needing huge computer capacity, and also the development of models, together with the testing of said models.

Final report

Results in Hungarian
A pályázat három éve alatt a tervezett három projektből kettőt megvalósítottam és két további kapcsolódó témán dolgoztam. Negatív eredményekhez vezetett a B projekt a rács O(4) phi^4 modell termodinamikáját illetően. A trivialitás által kiszabott minimális rácsállandó nagysága ellehetetleníti a hőmérsékletfüggő mennyiségek kontinuum limeszét az effektív értelemben is. Ennek ellenére több kontinuum módszerrel hasonlítottunk össze vákuum mennyiségeket véges levágás mellett. A C projektben kidolgoztuk a rács-fejlesztett PNJL modellt, amelyben a négy-fermion csatolás a mágneses tértől függ. A függés barion tömegek mágneses tér függéséből van levezetve, melyeket teljes rács QCD szimulációkban mértünk meg. A fejlesztés képessé teszi a PNJL modellt a teljes rács QCD B-T fázisdiagramjának kvalitatív és bizonyos mennyiségekre kvantitatív reprodukálására. Dolgoztam még továbbá önkonzisztens 2PI propagátorok Euklidesziből Minkowski térbe való elfolytatásán. A numerikus elfolytatást több-pontos Padé sorokkal végeztük, és megmutattuk hogy képes komplex analitikus struktúra leírására. Emellett részt veszek egy jelenleg is folyó kutatásban, ahol a rács QCD pszeudokritikus hőmérsékletének imaginárius barionikus kémiai potenciálról valósra folytatását több-pontos Padé sorokkal valósítjuk meg.
Results in English
During the three years of the postdoctoral position, I completed two out of three projects proposed in my research plan and worked on two additional connecting studies. Project B led to some negative conclusions about the thermodynamics of the lattice O(4) phi^4 model. The largeness of the minimal lattice spacing, induced by triviality makes it impossible to carry out a continuum extrapolation for temperature dependent quantities, even in an effective sense. Nevertheless, for vacuum quantities, we made a comparison with several continuum methods at finite cutoff. In Project C we developed the lattice-improved PNJL model, where the four-fermion coupling depends on the external magnetic field. The dependence is obtained from the magnetic field dependence of baryon masses measured in full lattice QCD simulations. This improvement enables the PNJL model to qualitatively and to some extent quantitatively reproduce the B-T phase diagram obtained in full QCD. I also worked on the numerical analytic continuation of Euclidean propagators to Minkowski space. We showed that the self consistent propagators obtained in 2PI can be analytically continued using multipoint Padé approximants, and show complex analytic structure. I am also taking part in a still ongoing project where the pseudocritical temperature of full lattice QCD depending on imaginary baryochemical potential is analytically continued to real chemical potentials using the multipoint Padé approximants method.
