A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A kutatás módszerei a statisztikus fizikából és idősoranalízisből ismert olyan eljárások (visszatérési térképek, extrém események bekövetkezése), melyek új utat nyithatnak a bolygórendszerek vizsgálatában.

A naprendszerbeli kis égitestek (aszteroidák, üstökös) száma a mai napig vitatott ütemben változik. A dinamikai rendszerek elméletéből ismert, hogy a rendszert elhagyó részecskék (ez a Naprendszerben kidobódást vagy nagybolygóval való ütközést jelent) száma rövid időkre exponenciális, hosszú időkre hatványtörvényt követ. Ez utóbbi egyszerű, néhány szabadsági fokú rendszerekre a fázistér szerkezetének ismeretében jól magyarázható. Összetettebb rendszerek esetén azonban jelenleg nincs elfogadott magyarázat a bomlási folyamat hátterére. Ennek megoldására a bolygómozgás klasszikus elméletét statisztikus fizikai módszerekkel (Fokker-Planck-Kolmogorov egyenlet, bolyongási problémák, szabálytalan diffúzió) írjuk le, bízva abban, hogy ezzel bonyolultabb rendszerekben is magyarázat adható a részecskék bomlási folyamatára.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.

A kutatás fő motivációját a precíz mérési eredményekből kinyerhető információk adják. Feltételezésünk szerint az exobolygórendszerekről rendelkezésre álló egyre nagyobb mennyiségű adatokból megfelelő eljárásokkal olyan információ nyerhető a rendszer dinamikai viselkedésére vonatkozóan, melyeket eddig csak a mozgásegyenletek direkt megoldásával kaptunk.
Ennek fényében a megválaszolandó legfőbb kérdések a következők:
- Lehetséges-e pusztán mérési adatsorokra támaszkodva rekonstruálni egy távoli bolygórenszer dinamikai viselkedését?
- Az idősoranalízisben megismert visszatérési térképek szerkezetét hogyan befolyásolják az adatsorokban megfigyelhető szisztematikus jelenségek (szezonális mintavételezés, mérési zaj)
- Miként nyerhetünk hasznos információt a dinamikára vonatkozóan ugyanazon dinamikai rendszert leíró különböző fizikai mennyiségeket tartalmazó adatsorokból (radiális sebesség, fedési időpont változása, pontos égi pozíció)?
- Az általunk vázolt eljárás milyen mértékben képes kiváltani a direkt számítási módszereket és mennyire képes csökkenteni a mérési pontatlanságból eredő dinamikai bizonytalanságot?
- A kinetikus elmélet és nemegynesúlyi statisztikus fizika módszerei alkalmasak-e a többszörös bolygórendszerekben megfigyelt dinamikai jelenségek leírására úgy mint, a rendszer tagjainak élettartama, ütközések, kilépések valószínűségei, radiális diffúzió.

Ezek a kérdések választ adhatnak egyrészről a nemlineáris idősoranalízis égi mechanikai, és ezáltal nagy szabadsági fokú rendszerekben, való alkalmazhatóságára. Másrészről a válaszokból megérthetjük a Naprendszerben, illetve az exobolygó-rendszerekben lezajló komplex dinamikai folyamatok elméleti hátterét.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

Ezzel lehetőség nyílik, hogy a bolygórendszerek szerkezetét, kialakulását, dinamikai viselkedését észleléseken keresztül is tanulmányozhassuk, ezzel finomítva elméleti ismereteinket a témában, illetve új eddig megmagyarázatlan jelenségek okát felderíthessük.

Kutatásunk lényege a nemlineáris idősoranalízisből ismert visszatérési térképek szerkezetének kvantitatív leírása. Ez lényegében a rendszer mintavételezése során kapott idősorokból (radiális sebesség, tranzit idők, pontos égi pozíció) a dinamika rekonstrukciója. Általánosságban elmondható, hogy a bolygórendszerek stabilitását manapság Monte-Carlo módszerrel, frekvencia analízissel egybekötött N-test szimulációkkal oldják meg. Ebben a viszonylatban az általunk vázolt módszer egyedülálló a dinamikus csillagászatban, tekintve, hogy kizárólag mérési eredményekre támaszkodva ad képet a dinamikai viselkedésről.

Továbbá nyitott kérdésként tekinthetünk a Naprendszer, illetve az exobolygó-rendszerek szerkezetének időbeli változására. A megfigyelt kis égitestek száma (pl. a Mars és Jupiter közti aszteroida öv, vagy a Neptunuszon túli kisbolygók) eltérést mutat a hosszú idejű számításokból kapott eredményekhez képest. A különbség elméleti magyarázata még nem ismert, numerikus eredmények arra engednek következtetni, hogy a konzervatív dinamikai rendszerekben jelenlévő ragadósság a felelős a jelenségért. Ennek kiderítésére a statisztikus fizikában használt valószínűségi leírást alkalmazzuk a bolygómozgás leírására.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Pusztán a távoli bolygórendszer valamely fizikai paraméterét vagyunk képesek indirekt módon mérni a központi csillagról érkező fény formájában. A kérdés az, hogy vajon létezik-e módszer amivel e csekély mértékű információ birtokában is megbízható következtetéseket tudunk levonni a messzi bolygók mozgásáról?

A választ a modern idősoranalízis módszereiben és a pontos mérési eredmények együttes alkalmazásában lehet keresni. Célunk olyan eljárás kidolgozása, melynek segítségével a jelenleg elérhető legprecízebb távcsöves mérésekből rekonstruálható a rendszer dinamikai viselkedése. A módszer alapja, hogy tudjuk egy bizonyos rendszer adott időközönként visszatér egy korábbi állapotának közelébe, ezen állapotok közti idők fontos információt hordoznak a rendszer dinamikájáról. Érdekes, hogy a visszatérési idők statisztikája más régebb óta fennálló problémákra (pl. aszteroidák, üstökösök kidobódása a Naprendszerből, vagy ütközésük a bolygókkal) is megoldást szolgáltathat.
Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

In recent years extrasolar planetary research has shown that it is essential to synthesize purely theoretical calculations and precise observations. This integration can help to answer fundamental questions about the solar system and other planetary systems, e.g. their formation, structure, and dynamics. Following this trend we set a target of this proposal whereby fundamental dynamical properties of planetary systems can be determined based purely on measured data sets. Thus the time consuming N-body simulations and semi-analytic approximations might be avoided. Research methods that will be used are known from non-equilibrium statistical mechanics and time series analysis (anomalous diffusion, extreme events, recurrence plots). They might open new directions in extrasolar planetary research.

Even today, there is no consensus in rate of change the number of small bodies (asteroids, comets) in solar system. It is known from theory of dynamical systems, that the number of escaped particles in a system is exponential for short times, but follows a power law for long times. The latter can be explained rather easily in simple, low degree of freedom systems, provided the structure of the phase space is known. However, for more complex systems, there is currently no accepted explanation of the background of the decay process. To address this, the classical theory of planetary motion will be described by the methods of non-equilibrium statistical physics (Fokker-Planck-Kolmogorov equation, random walk, and anomalous diffusion), hoping that this can give an explanation of the particles' decay in more complex systems.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The main motivation of the research is the information that can be obtained from precise astronomical observations.
We assume that using the increasing amount of data in exoplanetary research we will be able to build up adequate methods to get reliable information about the dynamics of the system which were so far only received via direct solution of the equations of motion.

Consequently, the main questions to be answered are:
-- Is it possible to reconstruct the dynamical behavior of a remote planetary system based only on measured data sets?
- How do the systematic trends (seasonal sampling, measurement noise) affect the structure of recurrence plots.
- How we can gain useful information to the dynamics if different physical quantities (radial velocity, transit times, astrometry), describing the same dynamical system, are measured?
- Can the outlined procedure redeem the direct calculations and is it possible to reduce the dynamical uncertainty arising from the noise of the measurements?
- Are the methods of the kinetic theory and non-equilibrium statistical physics suitable to describe the observed dynamical phenomena in multiple planet systems such as lifetime of particles, probability of escape and crash, radial diffusion.

These questions may answer on the one hand the applicability of nonlinear time series analysis in celestial mechanics, and thus in high degree of freedom systems. On the other hand, we can understand the theoretical background of complex dynamical processes taking place in our own solar system or in extrasolar planetary systems.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

We can say that these days the detection of exoplanets is a routine task. The database containing nearly 2,000 known extrasolar planets (more than 500 are in multiple systems) is continuously growing. This allows to study the structure, formation, and the dynamics of planetary systems through observations. As a consequence of this, we might refine our theoretical knowledge on the subject, and so far unexplained phenomena can also be unfolded.

Although a lot of discovery and follow-ups are already in our possession, to study the dynamical behavior of a distant planetary system is a very challenging task because we can not see the planets directly. That is, orbital elements, i.e. the initial conditions needed for dynamical computations are not available or have a considerable amount of measurement error.

The main purpose of this proposal is to give a quantitative description of the structure of recurrence plots. This is basically nothing else than the reconstruction of the system's dynamics based on the time series (radial velocity, transit times, astrometry) obtained from astronomical measurements. Generally speaking, nowadays the stability description of planetary systems can be done by Monte-Carlo method, frequency analysis combined with N-body simulations, etc. We can say that the proposed method is unique in dynamical astronomy. Considering that it gives reliable picture about the dynamics solely on measured data sets.

The temporal changes in the structure of the solar system and also the extrasolar planetary systems can be considered as an open problem. The observed number of small bodies (e.g. the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, or Trans Neptunian Objects) shows differences compared to the results obtained from the long-term integration. The theoretical answer to this discrepancy is still unknown. However, numerical results indicate that the so-called stickiness effect that is present in conservative dynamical systems is responsible for this deviation. To this end, probability description of non-equilibrium statistical physics will be used to describe planetary motion. We believe that this new approach provides a valuable and new results in planetary dynamics.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

People has been interested in the solar system's formation, long-term stability and structure for centuries. In recent decades, the diversity of discovered extrasolar planetary systems provides an opportunity to answer also these questions. To describe the orbit of celestial bodies one needs the equations of motion that govern the dynamics, and also the initial positions and velocities. However, the observations of exoplanets do not provide such information. We are able to measure a physical parameter of a distant planetary system merely indirect via the light emitted by the central star of the configuration. The question is, therefore, whether there is any method which reliable conclusions can be drawn from the motion of the distant planets based on these minor information gathered by astronomers?

The answers can be searched to the combined application of modern methods of non-linear time series analysis and accurate astronomical observations. Our goal is to provide a process by which the system's dynamics can be reconstructed using the currently available cutting-edge measurements. The method is based on the fact that a particular system periodically returns to the vicinity one of its previous states. Times between these states provide important information on the dynamics of the system.
Interestingly, the return time statistics can provide solutions to other problems (e.g. ejection of the asteroids and comets from the solar system, or crashing with the planets) that have been existed since longer times as well.

Results in Hungarian
A kutatás során olyan új módszert dolgoztunk ki, mellyel közvetlenül a mért idősorokból nyerhetünk információt egy bolygórendszer dinamikai viselkedéséről. Ennek köszönhetően, a nagy számításigényű n-test szimulációkat és statisztikai vizsgálatokat kiküszöbölve, hatékonyan juthatunk el a rendszer stabilitisának leírásához. A módszer további erőssége, hogy zajjal terhelt nem egyenközű mintavételezés esetén is jól alkamazható, így felhasználhatósága túlmutat a projektben tamulmányozott csillagászati problémákon. Egy másodlagos projekt keretében a Naprendszer, illetve extraszoláris bolygórendszerek alapvető dinamikai tulajdonságait vizsgáltuk numerikus módszerek segítségével. A komplex mozgásformák tanulmányozásával elméleti magyarázatot adtunk számos új felfedezésre (naprendszerbeli kis égitestek körüli gyűrűk kialakulása) és megfigyelési eredeményre (protoplanetáris korongok szerkezete). Továbbá egy egyszerű dinamikai modell segítségével magyaráztuk a bolygókeletkezés egy lehetséges szakaszát (mag-akkréciós tömegnövekedés).
Results in English
A new method that precisely descibes the dynamical behaviour of a planetary system based solely on the observational data has been developed. By using this technique one can investigate the system stability very efficiently avoiding the computationally expensive 'n' body integration and statistical calculations. Further advantage of the method is that it works well in case of noisy and unevenly sampled data set. Thus, the proposed strategy can also be applied to other problems beyond the dynamical astronomy. As a second part of the project, we have investigated planetary dynamics in our own solar system as well as in extrasolar worlds. Numerical techniques helped to explore theoretical explanations of recent observations and disvoveries (such as ring systems in outer solar system or protoplanetary disk structure). Furthermore, we suggested a toy model to describe the early phase of planet formation (known as core accretion).
