Summary in Hungarian
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

Néhány kísérleti eredményünk várhatóan további együttműködésnek adhat teret Magyarországon belül is. Például a Szegedi Tudományegyetem Oktatáselméleti Kutatócsoportjában a Diagnosztikus Mérések Fejlesztése projekten dolgozó kutatók természetes partnerek lehetnek ezekben.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Kutatásunk fő célja a nem-kognitív képességek (pl. együttműködés, versengés, kockázatkerülés stb.) iskolai teljesítményre gyakorolt hatásának, és ezen belül is a társadalmi különbségek vizsgálata.
Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The research on the effect of family background and cognitive skills and their interaction on individual success in schooling is vast. The study of non-cognitive traits (individual preferences or personality traits) and their role in determining individual success in education has recently started to blossom, but with very little emphasis on social differences in these effects.
The goal of our long-term research agenda is to uncover the interplay of non-cognitive traits and social background (and ethnicity and gender) in affecting success in the education system.
More specifically, we will study how individual preferences (such as time, risk, competitive, or social preferences) and personality traits relate to salient educational performance measures (e.g. test score, grades) across social status.
The proposed research will combine the sub-discipline of social stratification research with education economics and behavioral sciences. It pays close attention to social inequalities over the schooling career, using the econometric toolbox of education economics as well as laboratory experiments frequently used in behavioral sciences. Combining existing large-scale surveys with data from laboratory experiments will be a frequently used technique in the project.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

Which individual preferences and non-cognitive traits associate with teacher given grades? Which individual preferences and non-cognitive traits associate with standardized test-scores? Do there associations differ across social status?

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

The novelty of this research plan is obvious: the study of non-cognitive skills within economics and their role in educational success has only started to evolve, with little emphasis on social differences. Thus this research group has the opportunity to connect to a fast expanding field and join a prestigious international science community. Laboratories or research centers using laboratory experiments in education have just currently started blossoming: some examples are the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (http://www.povertyactionlab.org/education), the Education Innovation Laboratory at Harvard (http://edlabs.harvard.edu/) the School Effectiveness & Inequality Initiative at MIT (http://seii.mit.edu/), or some people at the Empirical and Experimental Economics research platform at Innsbruck (http://eeecon.uibk.ac.at/). While our findings are not going to be adaptable to policy in a straightforward way, they will certainly pave the way for much more narrow, directly policy relevant research. Some of our experiments can open further cooperation within the country: for instance researchers currently developing the Diagnostic Assessment systems at the University of Szeged Center for Research on Learning and Instruction would be natural partners for such a line of research.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

Individual success is greatly influenced by individual cognitive and non-cognitive skills. The goal of this long-term research agenda is to uncover the interplay of non-cognitive skills (e.g. cooperation, competition or risk-aversion) and social background in affecting school in schools. This research can have positive effect on developing new educational methods as well as on policy reform sin education both nationally and internationally. We use laboratory experiments to measure non-cognitive skills, which is a novel way in economics in such studies. With this research grant we aim to contribute to the new and rapidly expanding research field of experimental education economics.

Final report

Results in Hungarian
Bár a projekt véget ért, a kutatás tovább folytatódik. Egy újabb OTKA (K-143415) során tovább elemezzük a laboratóriumi kísérlet során nyert igen gazdag adatbázist (Horn, Kiss, and Lénárd 2022b), illetve a mostani projekt végén befejezett online kísérlet új adatbázisát is.
Results in English
The research conducted three data collections on preferences - laboratory experiments, survey questionnaires and online experiments. These provide the most comprehensive documentation in Hungary of the competitive-, social-, time- and risk-preferences of Hungarian students and adults. With the help of this research project, we demonstrated, among others, that people who are more patient or less present-biased have better labour market outcomes (Horn and Kiss 2020); that girls in high school are generally more altruistic, give less in the trust game, less are present-biased and less competitive than boys (Horn, Kiss, and Lénárd 2022a); that contrary to typical political arguments, we could not show empirically that childless people are more impatient or present-biased than those with children (Horn and Kiss 2022); or that competition and cooperation go together positively, but that these two individual characteristics are not linearly related to education: the average level of competition and cooperation is the highest for Hungarians with the highest educational attainment (Khayouti, Kiss, and Horn 2021). Although the project has ended, the research continues. During another OTKA (K-143415), we further analyze the very rich database obtained during the laboratory experiments (Horn, Kiss, and Lénárd 2022b), as well as the new database of the online experiment completed at the end of the current project.
