Final report

We demonstrated that individual variation in white feather reflectance is due to macrostructural and not nanostructural differences. In different sexes, we either explained rapid changes in white reflectance by changes in macrostructure, or explained reflectance in the late reproductive stage by the actual macrostructure. We demonstrated the information content and condition-dependence of white ornamentation in the context of dynamic condition measures and confirmed the condition-dependence of rapid reflectance change by brood size manipulation. We found that feather macrostructure reflected previous-year reproductive effort and predicted current-year reproductive capacity. We found that experimentally altered reproductive effort altered the sizes of next-year white patches but not their reflectance. We found an apparent partner parental care reaction to experimentally induced reflectance degradation, suggesting that rapid colour degradation can be a signal to the social partner. During this focal research, we described, among others, a) the first known case of multiple signal filtering in a natural population, b) year-round condition indication by a plumage ornament, c) a non-conventional parental care system, and d) a possible hidden sexual signal in a charismatic bird species.
