A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Elméleti kutatásunk célja hozzájárulni a topologikus kvantumszámítógépek megvalósításához. Tervezzük (1) topologikus kvantuminformáció-feldolgozásra alkalmas, újszerű topologikus fázisok felkutatását periodikusan gerjesztett rendszerekben, (2) Majorana-fermion alapú preciziós kvantuminformációs protokollok kidolgozását és (3) újfajta anyagok felkutatását, melyek a kvantuminformatika számára használható topologikus gerjesztéseket hordozhatnak.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

(3) A Majorana-fermionok vizsgálatára elterjedt kísérleti architektúra, a nanopálcák skálázható kísérleti megvalósítását számos nehezen leküzdhető akadály nehezíti. A nanopálcákat potenciálisan kiváltó új anyagokat és kísérleti elrendezéseket tervezünk felkutatni, sűrűségfunkcionál-elméleti módszerek segítségével.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

Munkánkkal a topologikus kvantumszámítógépek elméletéhez járulunk hozzá, ami kulcsfontosságú a nagyméretű kvantumszámítógép építéséhez. Új elméleti irányokat mutatunk, a létező kísérletek korlátait tisztázzuk, és javaslunk új anyagokat jövőbeli kísérletekhez. Elméleti kompetenciánkat mutatja, hogy - tudomásunk szerint Magyarországon egyedüliként - egyetemi kurzusokat tartunk topologikus szigetelőkről évek óta az ELTÉ-n, ezenkívül pl. megmutattuk, hogyan limitálja a spindekoherencia a vezető kvantumszámítógép-architektúrák egyikének működését. Numerikus kompetenciánk bizonyítéka, hogy részt vettünk több, kvantummechanikát használó, elméleti anyagtudományi programcsomag fejlesztésében. Ezen kompetenciák kombinációja, valamint erős kapcsolataink külföldi és magyar kísérleti csoportokkal, kivételesen hatékonnyá tesz minket a kitűzött célok elérésében.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Ezen kettős cél elérésének legígéretesebb útja a topologikus kvantumszámítógép.
Tervezett elméleti kutatásunkkal a nagyméretű topologikus kvantumszámítógépek építésének céljához járulunk hozzá. (1) Új utakat nyitunk meg a szükséges, ún. topologikus kvantumállapotok létrehozásához és fenntartásához, periodikus gerjesztések segítségével. (2) Elméleti modellek segítségével hozzájárulunk az egyik legígéretesebb hardware fejlesztéséhez (Majorana- fermionok nanopálcákon). (3) Javasolunk új anyagokat, amik a nanodrótoknál alkalmasabbak hálózatok létrehozására a a Majorana-fermionos architektúrában.
Bár kutatásunk tisztán elméleti, jelentős részében azon valóságos problémákon dolgozunk, amik visszatartják a mai legjobb kísérleteket attól, hogy egy skálázható kvantumszámítógépet tudjanak építeni.
Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

Topological quantum computation, the use of topological excitations to store and process quantum information, is a crucial tool to defeat decoherence and achieve large-scale quantum computation. From the theoretical ideas proposed around 2000, this approach is close to becoming an experimental reality, due to key theoretical advances such as the surface code protocol and to outstanding experimental achievements, notably the realization of Majorana fermions in quantum wires. Our theoretical proposal plans to contribute to the realization of topological quantum computing. We plan to (1) explore novel topological phases created by periodic driving, which could be useful for topological quantum computation, (2) suggest routes to high-precision quantum information protocols based on Majorana fermions and (3) propose new materials that can host topological excitations useful for quantum computation.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

(1) Periodic driving of a quantum system, in the extreme limit of low frequency and high intensity, cannot be treated using the standard perturbation theories. In this limit, some novel and only partially understood topological phases of matter have been predicted. We plan to use this opportunity to explore new paths to topological states and phases, potentially useful for quantum computation. (2) Since transport signatures of Majorana fermions are highly contested, a new generation of experiments plan to explore their signatures using braiding and fusion. We address the questions: What are the realistic outcomes in such experiments? How to design the devices and control schemes to mitigate decoherence and ensure high-fidelity operation? (3) The use of nanowires for Majorana fermions faces several challenges related to fabrication difficulties. We plan to explore alternative host materials using state-of-the-art ab initio calculations.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

Quantum computers, with their unique computational abilities are expected not only to enable breakthroughs in physics and chemistry, but also to have a transformative impact on society (for example by breaking many encryption protocols). Our work contributes to topological quantum computation, a crucial step of realizing large-scale quantum computers, by exploring new theoretical directions as well as clarifying the physical processes limiting existing experiments and proposing new materials for future ones. We have demonstrated our solid foundations in topological insulators by years of lecturing on the topic (the only course on topological insulators in Hungary), in environmental decoherence processes through previous work on spin dephasing in one of the prominent quantum computer architectures, and on computational material research by contributing to the development of computational packages that use quantum mechanics. The combination of these competences make us uniquely positioned to make substantial advances. We also benefit from close collaboration with some of the leading experimental groups, both abroad and in-house.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

Quantum computers, if realized, will have a transformative impact on our society by bringing some presently impossible computational problems within reach. To fulfil this aim, the quantum information stored in them needs to be "hidden" from detrimental effects of the environment, and at the same time be accessible to the operator of the computer for manipulation. The most viable path towards this aim is topological quantum computation, where the computer consists of a network of elementary parts (quantum bits), which can be reconfigured by changing in time the links connecting the quantum bits. Strong interactions along the links are used to hide the quantum information in correlations between the quantum bits, and the manipulation of this hidden quantum information is done by reconfiguring the network, "braiding" topological defects in it. Although the basic ingredients necessary for such a quantum computer have all been experimentally demonstrated, building a large-scale quantum computer has so far proved elusive.
Our theoretical research contributes to reaching the aim of large-scale topological quantum computation by (1) exploring new ways to create and stabilize so-called topological states by periodic driving of quantum systems, (2) improving theoretical models of a type of hardware used for topological quantum computation, Majorana fermions on nanowires, and (3) exploring new materials that are more suitable for construction of a network than the aforementioned nanowires.
Although this is a theoretical proposal, in a large part it addresses the very real problems holding the cutting edge present-day experiments back from realizing a scalable quantum computer.

A periodikus gerjesztéssel új utakat adtunk a topológiához. Atom- és szilárdtestfizikai kísérleti fizikusokkal együttműködésben tettünk javaslatokat, ill. értelmeztünk kísérleteket. Újszerű topologikus jelenségeket találtunk a rendezetlenség hatására periodikusan gerjesztett kvantumdinamikánál kétdimenziós rácsokon: topologikus delokalizációt, ill. a kvázienergia-szintek anomális levitációját és annihilációját. A topologikus kvantumszámítás alapjául szolgáló topologikus gerjesztéseket (Majorana-fermionok, -zéró-módusok) célzó kísérletekhez tettünk fontos elméleti hozzájárulást. Egyszerű modellt javasoltunk a számítás alaplépéséhez, a nemábeli fonáshoz, szupravezetés nélkül; erre azóta akusztikus kísérlet épült. A topologikus szupravezető rendszerek kiolvasását elemeztük, a fellépő fázisvesztési folyamatokkal. A Coulomb-taszítás hatását azonosítottuk kísérleti fizikusokkal közösen egy mezoszkopikus Josephson-átmenetben. A topologikusan védett degenerációk magasabb szintű, általános matematikai leírásában tettünk több lépést. Topologikus anyagcsaládokat vizsgáltuk ab initio és szoros kötésű elméleti modellekkel. Bizmut–tellurohalid–grafén hetetrostruktúrára mechanikai feszültséggel elérhető topologikus átalakulást jósoltunk, hozzájárultunk az első kísérlethez, ahol ebből állítottak elő egyréteget. Nodálishurok-félfémek elméleti modelljein az elektromos és mágneses válaszok elemzésével segítettük a kísérleti eredmények közti ellentmondások tisztázását.

We found new routes to topology using periodic driving. Together with atomic and solid state physics experimentalists, we suggested new setups and analyzed experimental results. We found new topological phenomena in disordered periodically driven two-dimensional lattice dynamics: topological delocalization and anomalous levitation and annihilation of quasienergy levels. We made important theory contributions to the experimental effort to identify topological excitations useful for quantum computation. We suggested a simple, non-supercounducting experiment for non-Abelian braiding, which has since been implemented in an acoustic experiment. We analyzed readout and dephasing in topological superconducting setups promising for Majorana fermions. We identified the impact of Coulomb repulsion on mesoscopic Josephson junctions, with experimental colleagues. We made important steps in a generalized, mathematical theory of topological degeneracies. We investigated topological materials with ab initio and tight binding models. For bismuth tellurohalide graphene heterostructures we predicted that mechanical strain can lead to a topological transition; we contributed to the first experiment where single layer flakes were produced. On theoretical models of nodal loop semimetals, we analyzed magnetic and electric responses, and clarified experimental conundrums.
