A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A Future Circular Collider (FCC) Study projekt 2014-ben indult, célja a következő generációs proton illetve elektron ütköztetőgyűrűk terveinek kidolgozása.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

Lehetővé válna a Higg-önkölcsönhatás tanulmányozása.
Ennek a világméretű, jól koordiált projektnek a részeként a kutatócsoport profitálhat a különböző tudományterületek, technológiák, kutatócentrumok és nagyberendezések széles skálájának a szoros együttműködéséből. Az együttműködés keretében a CERN fedezi a prototípusok előállításának költségeit, és a világ vezető szakembereivel való rendszeres konzultációval, az ott összegyűlt tudásanyag átadásával segíti a kutatócsoport munkáját. A kutatócsoport hozzáférést kapott a CERN világszinten is kiemelkedő alacsonyhőmérsékletű mágnes teszt laborjához, és az ott folyó kísérletek fedezésére anyagi támogatásban részesül az Európai Bizottság "FP7 Research Infrastructures" támogatási keretéből. A nagyon erőforrásigényes projekt domináns részére tehát megvan a fedezet külső forrásból. Ez a jelen pályázatban igényelt ráfordítások igen hatékony megtérülését garantálja.
A jelen pályázatban bemutatott kutatás hozzájárulna az FCC megvalósításához, illetve a nagy, kiterjedt szupravezetők viselkedésének jobb megértéséhez erős mágneses terekben. Ezek a tapasztalatok elősegíthetik jobb eszközök kifejlesztését például az orvoslásban vagy a villamosenergia-hálózatok terén. Egy lehetséges példa a nagy szupravezető mágneses passzív árnyékolások alkalmazása az orvosi MRI készülékekben, melyek csökkenthetnék ezen készülékek bonyolultságát és költségeit.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

A Large Hadron Collider segítségével végzett kísérletek vezettek 2012-ben a Higgs bozonnak, a részecskefizikai standard modell régóta keresett hiányzó építőkövének a felfedezéséhez.
Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The Future Circular Collider (FCC) Study was launched in 2014 in order to develop designs for the next generation high-energy particle collider for protons and electrons. The challenges of the project require the development of new concepts and technologies for its key components, one of these being the injection/extraction system of the collider. The septum magnets of this system create a high field (~1 Tesla at the LHC) at the extracted beam, and zero field at the circulating beam, in close proximity (~5 cm). For the FCC proton collider a magnetic field of at least 2 Tesla (preferably 3-4 T) is required, which is very difficult to realize with existing technology. A novel concept of using a passive zero-field-cooled superconducting shield inside a custom-designed external magnet was proposed by the PI as an attractive alternative to existing technologies. This solution has many advantages and it was shown that the requirements of this specific application can be met with realistic superconducting materials and excitation coils. The aim of this project is to study all aspects of using this technology for this purpose, propose a realistic design, construct and test different prototypes, compare this concept to its alternatives, and finally evaluate its feasibility for the FCC. The research group is also participating in the studies trying to minimize the distortions of the magnetic field caused by the planned high-temperature superconducting coating of the beam screens.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

While the applicability of superconductors as very efficient shields for high magnetic fields has been demonstrated in the literature, their use for this specific purpose of creating a high-field septum magnet in a high-energy accelerator raises a lot of questions. Short and long term effects of radiation on the superconductor must be studied. The shielded field must be stable over the duration of a fill (about 10 hours for the LHC); the magnitude of the slow relaxation of the shielding currents (flux creep) and its effect on the excluded field must be evaluated. The homogeneity of the excluded field must be measured to validate the simulation results.
Stability of the bulk superconductor against the magneto-thermal runaway process, the flux jump, is absolutely necessary, but not sufficient for the machine's safety. A reliable way must be found to detect a developing flux jump quickly enough. The dynamics and the time scale of this phenomenon must be studied to confirm that it is slow enough for a safe beam abort before it fully develops. In case the kicker magnets fire erratically out of synchrony with the particle-free abort gap, the beam is swept through the septum's blade, leading to a fatal damage of the device. The "massless" septum configuration (which has a slit in the shield) avoids this problem. The field quality around such a shield, and its shielding efficiency is to be studied.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

The unprecedented luminosity and energy of the Future Circular Collider (50+50 TeV for the proton machine) would allow to explore new territories of particle physics. The high production rates would allow to observe and measure rare processes of the standard model, improve the precision of the determination of standard model parameters, and increase sensitivity to possible deviations from standard model predictions. The Higgs self-interaction could be studied with precision. The seven-fold increase in center-of-mass energy compared to the LHC would provide a huge discovery potential for new physics. We might get an answer to some of the questions left open so far: What is dark matter? What is the origin of the inequality of matter and antimatter in our universe? Are there supersymmetric particles?
Being part of this coordinated world-scale effort, the project can benefit from the tight collaboration network of a very wide range of different disciplines, technologies, research centres and facilities. CERN has agreed to finance the manufacturing of the prototypes, and to help the group's activity by frequent discussions with the world's leading experts. The research group was granted access to the outstanding SM18 cryogenic magnet test facility of CERN and receives funding to conduct experiments from the European Commission under the FP7 Research Infrastructures project EUCARD-2, grant agreement no. 312453. The dominant part of this very resource-intensive project is therefore covered by external contributions. This ensures a very efficient return rate of the resources requested in this application.
The research would contribute to the realization of the FCC and a better understanding of the behaviour of large bulk superconductors in magnetic fields under very stringent requirements. These experiences could yield more sophisticated devices in medicine, power networks, etc. One example is the possibility of large superconducting magnetic shields around MRI magnets to make them simpler and more affordable.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

The Higgs boson - the long awaited missing building element of the standard model of particle physics - was discovered in 2012 at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. After its upgrade the LHC will reach its end of lifetime presumably around 2035. The Future Circular Collider (FCC) Study was launched in 2014 to develop designs for the next generation collider with about 7 times higher beam energies, in order to ensure the continuity of high energy accelerator science and particle physics, and open the way to previously unexplored territories of particle physics and to the discoveries of new phenomena. The aim of the current research project is to develop a new concept for the realization of the injection and extraction system of the new collider, which would be very difficult with existing technologies. This concept uses a superconducting shield to create a zero-field region within a very strong magnetic field. Superconducting materials will play a very important role in the future. Although the application of superconductors as very efficient magnetic shields is not new, their safe usage in this specific environment requires the very careful study of many phenomena. This is made now possible due to the collaboration with CERN, providing access to their extremely sophisticated infrastructure. The results of this research could also contribute to the development of sophisticated devices in medicine, power networks, etc. One example is the possibility of large superconducting magnetic shields around MRI magnets to make them simpler and more affordable.

A SuShi szeptum prototípus tekercselése befejeződött. A tekercselés menete, az eszközök, a tudnivalók részletes videókon lettek dokumentálva, melyek a szakmai és a szélesebb közönség számára is készültek. A videók az intézet illetve a kutatócsoport hivatalos, frissen létrehozott YouTube csatornáján érhetők el. A Paul Scherrer Intézet ígéretes eredményei szerint a viasszal impregnált, rövid szupravezető kábel-minták tréningelésnélkül elérték a névleges kritikus áramerősségüket. Ennek hatására egy kísérletsorozatba kezdtünk, hogy kidolgozzuk a valódi, komplex mágnestekercsek üregmentes viaszos impregnálásának módszerét, megoldva a viasz ~10%-kal történő összehúzódását a fagyása során. A sikeres kísérletsorozat eredményeképpen a viaszt fogunk használni a SuShi szeptum impregnálására..

The winding of the SuShi septum prototype has been completed. The winding process, the tooling, the tips and tricks have been documented in detailed videos, targeting both the professional community and the general public. These videos are available on the official YouTube channel of the institute/research group. Promising results of the Paul Scherrer Institute with wax impregnation (nominal current of superconducting cables reached without training on short samples) triggered our group to conduct a series of experiments (using a 0.5 m long CCT former received from CERN), and develop a reliable, void-free impregnation method for realistic magnet windings, coping with the ~10% contraction of wax at solidification. As a consequence, wax impregnation has been adopted for the SuShi septum prototype. The opposite-field septum magnet concept has been further developed, a realistic, fully-fledged CAD model has been prepared. The winding process and the necessary tooling have been designed. A project proposal has been prepared and submitted to the "I.FAST Innovation Fund" to develop a cost-efficient manufacturing method of this magnet made entirely from PEEK (polyether ether ketone), allowing fast ramp rates. The group joined the design efforts of the HITRIPlus ring and extraction optics. The results of preliminary simulations indicate that the very small wall thickness of the opposite-field septum might be required in the compact ring layout.
