A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Először a természetes beszélgetésekben megfigyelhető beszélő-váltásokhoz kapcsolódó képességek fejlődését vizsgáljuk.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

Ezért a beszélő-váltások fejlődésének jellemzése a szociális viselkedés alapmechanizmusaiba nyújt belátást.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The main goal of our research project is to explore the development of pragmatic and communicative skills in infancy, with a special emphasis on the interplay between early mentalistic and linguistic abilities, and their gradual transformation into sophisticated and efficient language use. We apply a novel approach by combining neuroscientific methods (EEG) and eye-tracking to better understand two key aspects of infants’ communicational expectations and linguistic predictions. The first is the development of conversational turn-taking: Infants seem to be in possession of complex predictive mechanisms necessary for the remarkably swift and fast switches between conversational roles, but only a handful of studies have explored it sofar. The second thread deals with how communicational expectations are informed by Theory of Mind representations and linguistic prediction. We want to explore if belief states that are attributed during linguistic communication are semantic and concern types, or if they are more local and concern tokens, and if they are modulated by ostensive communicative cues. Our research could illuminate whether infants have conceptual meta-representations, or a more situational understanding of the (false) beliefs of communicative partners. This project could show that the communicative value of speech seems to be evident for infants from very early on, and that they take into account communicative gestures in their semantic representations.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

A novel approach to human communication, Relevance Theory proposes that communication is not mere information transmission, but speakers aim to change the mental representations, beliefs and desires, of hearers. The theory implies that communication takes precedence over language use, and involves considerable mentalization processes, but its developmental implications have not been explored systematically. The aim of our project is to identify and specify the interplay between Theory of Mind (ToM) and semantic representations in communicative situations in infancy. One of our main areas of interest is the precise timing of the development of expectations related to conversational turn-transitions between speakers and listeners. Earlier studies have shown that language development seems to switch gears around 14 months of age -- around the time the N400 brain wave, an electrophysiological indicator of semantic comprehension and prediction can be evoked reliably. We hypothesize that turn-transition predictions appear right around 14 months, because they are closely tied to the development of mentalistic and semantic predictions. We also plan to use event-related potentials (ERPs) to explore whether 14-month-old infants follow the linguistic comprehension of social partners via generic, semantic representations, or more local, object representations, and if these processes are dependent of ostensive communicative cues. The significance of these results on language development are two folds: (1) we could identify the precise timing of the development of turn-transition predictions and (2) we could gain insight of the nature of ToM representations in linguistic predictions.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

Evidence is accumulating that infants engage in rich and complex communicative behavior well before they start to talk proper (e.g., pointing, gaze following, etc.), but the systematic investigation of the preverbal pragmatic skills during early development has been sporadic. In our project, we hope to find that infants’ pragmatic skills are more developed as it was thought before, and that mentalization skills provide the basis for language development.
It has been recognized only recently in psycholinguistic research that the temporal pattern of communication, that is, the ability of taking a turn in conversation with the right timing is a basic yet essential skill for efficient language use. Children, adults, or second-language learners who might have problems with timing their turns (being too late or too early with speaking) suffer social consequences. It has been also hypothesized that the timing of conversational turns have significance even for the meaning of utterances. For example, a delay with responding to an offer could already express a refusal. Hence, information about development of turn-taking provides insight into the development of the core mechanism of social behaviour.
The project also explores how Theory of Mind skills and semantic comprehension rely on and inform each other during early language development. A pragmatic-communicational approach puts language learning in a different perspective: If language is not for transmitting information, but to change what our partners think, believe or desire, the communicative behavior (what and how is intended to be communicated) might be just as important as linguistic input per se for infants to develop accurate interpretations of conversations. Our approach puts in perspective why watching TV or Youtube videos are not sufficient to become better speakers: First one might need to become good communicator. We hope to show that infants might have more sophisticated mental representations of other’s belief as it has been thought before.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

The project explores infants’ understanding of language and communication. We hypothesize that infants, around or even before they start to produce their first words have sophisticated skills to infer other’s beliefs, desires, and conversely, communicative intentions. Such abilities are critical if we take language to be more than a messaging system, but a powerful way to express to our social partners how we feel, or what do we need. In fact human communication seems to require speakers and hearers to keep track what the other intended to express, to have a good understanding of language. We would like to explore how infants develop such complex skills, and become able to infer what social partners want from them when they utter certain expressions, and how to express themselves in an understandable and efficient way. We want to explore whether babies are attentive towards communicative gestures of adults, and take these gestures and corresponding mental states into account when they guess what speakers wanted to tell them. We plan to examine whether infants’ early linguistic and mentalization abilities help them to participate in conversations by taking turns as speakers and hearers; and if they use linguistic processes proper, or other mechanisms when they try to follow the linguistic understanding of social partners, both communicative and non-communicative. These results could show that infants are equipped with basic skills for understanding and follow human communication very early on, and help to examine theories that emphasize that human communicative skills precede language during the course of human development and perhaps of human evolution.

Results in English
In our research project, we conducted a number of experiments using electrophysiological (EEG), eye-tracking and on-line methods. Our results showed that Theory-of-Mind (ToM) – our ability to attribute intentions, desires and beliefs to others, independent of our own – enters language processing in a different way than previously thought. According to current theories, communicative intentions (ToM) play a role in the interpretation of language only after its syntactic-semantic decoding, during a pragmatic stage integrating social-contextual information. Our results show, however, that already during semantic processing, during the retrieval of linguistic elements from long-term memory, ToM effects can be observed. The N400, an electrophysiological response previously linked exclusively to semantic processing/retrieval, appeared to be sensitive to direct manipulations of ToM (false beliefs, or even the mere presence of another person), even in situations where semantic processing demands were low. Surprisingly, similar results were obtained with 14-month-old babies, when the N400 can be reliably elicited for the first time during development. These results may fundamentally rewrite our picture of the neural organization of language acquisition and processing, and suggest that instead of being subserved by two separate systems, language system may be a mentalistic ToM system in nature.
