A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A vízösszetétel becslése során a számításokba bevitt hiba, valamint a kalcit-víz oxigénizotóp frakcionáció nem-egyensúlyi jellege viszont nagy bizonytalanságot okoz a számolt paleohőmérsékleti értékekben. A „clumped” izotóp (D47) geokémia olyan új, dinamikusan fejlődő kutatási módszer, amely a nehéz izotópok egy molekulán belüli kapcsolódásának hőmérsékletfüggésén alapszik. Segítségével a karbonátok kiválási hőmérséklete nagy pontossággal meghatározható, kizárólag a karbonát fázis D47 értéke alapján. A pleisztocén travertínók kiválási hőmérsékletének meghatározása a paleohidrotermális rendszer rekonstrukcióját is lehetővé teszi. Kiemelt célkitűzésünk továbbá hazai fiatal kutatók támogatása és a módszerrel való megismertetése.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A módszer olyan helyeken érhető el, mint a Yale, Harvard, University of California Los Angeles, The Johns Hopkins University. Európában a svájci ETH Zürich laboratóriuma számít a vezető labornak, ahol Stefano Bernasconi egy automata módszert fejlesztett ki a Finnigan MAT 253 tömegspektrométer KIEL IV karbonátfeltáró egységhez való kapcsolásával. További európai clumped izotópos laboratóriumok találhatóak az Egyesült Királyságban, Franciaországban, Németországban, Norvégiában, Hollandiában és Izraelben.
A projekt jó alapot nyújthat a clumped izotópos technika itthoni alkalmazása során, és az MTA ATOMKI által elnyert GINOP pályázat révén 2017-ben beszerzésre kerülő clumped izotópos tömegspektrométer segítségével 2018 márciusától már az első hazai mérések is elkezdődhetnek. A hazai kutatások versenyképessége szempontjából ugyanilyen jelentőségű a fiatal kutatók megismertetése a módszerrel és bevonásuk a kutatásokba.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

A múltbeli klíma kutatásának fontos eszközei a geológiai képződmények, ezen belül is a karbonátos kőzetek. Tervezett kutatásunk a fenti képződmények
Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

Continental carbonates are abundant in Hungary and their study can significantly contribute to the reconstruction of paleoclimate. Their geochemical study and radiometric dating has just started in the past years, but their precise temperature of deposition, in the lack of an appropriate analytical method, was impossible until now. The reason is that the calcite-water d18O thermometer used during the past decades for temperature calculations requires, beside the d18O of carbonate, also the knowledge of the d18O of the parent water, which is difficult to estimate. Because of the assumption of the 18Owater and due to the frequently occurring non-equilibrium fractionation during carbonate deposition in nature, further uncertainties are introduced into the calculations. Clumped isotope (D47) geochemistry is a new and quickly developing method, which is based on the temperature dependent clumping of heavy isotopes within one molecule. With this method the temperature of deposition of carbonates can be calculated with high precision, based on solely the D47 value of the carbonate. Our project is based on the introduction and application of this novel method in Hungary in order to determine the temperature of deposition of the (partly previously dated) travertines, tufas and pedogenic carbonates. Based on the calculated temperatures we can provide a novel way for the reconstruction of the temperature of precipitation and the climate and we will be able to reconstruct the temperature evolution of the paleohydrothermal system, which is a unique approach on international level. Our goal is to support young researchers while introducing them into clumped isotope geochemistry.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The starting point is the clumped isotope thermometer calibrated using travertines by Kele et al. (2015). Studies proved that this calibration can be used on dolomites (Millán et al. 2016), foraminifera (Grauel et al. 2016) and pedogenic carbonates (Újvári et al. 2016), carbonate concretions (Heimhofer et al. 2017) and molluscs (Ritter et al. 2017). One of the main questions of this project is whether the travertine-based calibration is valid for tufa (more useful for paleoclimatic studies) or not? To answer this question we are planning to collect and analyse recent tufa samples from a wide, 0-30⁰C temperature range. We will try to reconstruct the temporal evolution of temperature conditions during travertine and tufa deposition, which may be informative about both the paleohydrothermal system and the paleoclimate.
In case of tufa samples collected from different climatic regions the main question is whether their clumped isotope composition reflects the regional change in d18O of rainfall (e.g. according to distance from the ocean) or not. Since the clumped isotope method is new, in case of pedogenic carbonates we are trying to understand: 1) the relationship between soil temperature and the stable/clumped isotopic composition of soil carbonates; 2) the relationship between climatic changes in the Carpathian Basin during the Middle- and Late Pleistocene and changes in the stable- and clumped isotope composition of pedogenic carbonates. In case of travertines and tufa we will try to figure out the 1) temperature of formation of different cement phases and 2) stable isotopic composition of different fluids, which may help us to understand also the diagenetic processes.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

The introduction of this method which is “almost unknown” in Hungary would be very important not only in
paleotemperature calculations, but also in other geological applications (diagenesis, paleoaltimetry, atmospheric research, reservoir geology, meteorite research, biogeochemistry stb.) as it would offer new perspectives. New applications are related to organic compounds and gases other than CO2 (e.g. CH4, O2, N2). Because of the novelty of the method (and due to the expensive laboratory background) the number of clumped isotope laboratories world-wide is still very low, and there are only about ten labs in Europe. Thus, the introduction of this method in Hungary is very important, since with the application of clumped isotopes top researches could be conducted in Hungary and results could be published in highly referred (Q1) journals. International competitors are the best universities and research institutes. The method was developed at Caltech by John Eiler and his team and in the beginning clumped isotope laboratories were only in the United States at places like Yale, Harvard, University of California Los Angeles, The Johns Hopkins University. In Europe the ETH Zürich (Switzerland) is one of the leader laboratory with the automated method developed by Stefano Bernasconi using a Finnigan MAT 253 mass spectrometer connected to a KIEL IV carbonate preparation device. Further laboratories in Europe are for example in the United Kingdom, in France, in Germany, in Norway, in the Netherlands and in Israel.
Our project could serve as a good base for the introduction of the clumped isotope technique in Hungary, and using the clumped isotope mass spectrometer which will be purchased by the support of a GINOP project won by the MTA ATOMKI in 2017, the first analyses could be performed from the March 2018 in Hungary. From the respect of competitiveness of researches conducted in Hungary, it is also very important to show this technique for students involving them into the researches.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

Climate change, global warming and extreme climatic events are serious problems for the society. Study of past climate and its temporal change can significantly help us to understand the reasons for climate change and to restrict human activities (e.g. greenhouse gas emission) which can induce and promote climate change. Geological formations and carbonate rocks are important tools in paleoclimate research and reconstruction of their depositional environment and temperature of deposition serve as a base for paleoclimate studies. In Hungary there are many continental carbonate rocks (travertine, tufa) deposited from thermal- and karstic springs and they preserve important information about past hydrothermal systems and climatic processes. We are planning to study these carbonates with a new method called
clumped isotope geochemistry. The method is based on the temperature-dependent clumping of heavy (rare) isotopes within one molecule and with the help of this method the temperature of deposition (+/-2 ⁰C) of carbonates can be determined directly. This temperature data can be then used to infer past climatic conditions and thermal spring activity. However, climate research is not everything. Our project is based on the application of a new method, which has never been used in Hungary before and which is more than a tool for paleoclimate reconstruction as it can also contribute to researches related to meteorites, atmosphere (greenhouse gasses), oil-reservoir geology or body temperature of dinosaurs.

Travertínók vizsgálata alapján rekonstruáltuk a Budai-hg.

This project was the first in Hungary, which applied the novel clumped isotope method to calculate the depositional temperature of travertine, tufa, vein calcite, paleosoil carbonates, mollusc shells and dolomites. Funding from the NKFIH allowed us to reconstruct some details of paleohydrothermal changes in the Buda and Gerecse Hills based on the studied travertines. Important monitoring and geochemical studies (including C–14 dating) have started on Hungarian and Transylvanian tufa deposits. Based on soil-carbonates MIS–5 paleotemperatures were reconstructed using clumped isotopes and study of mollusc shells from specific warm intervals of the last glacial period were done as well. Dating and clumped isotope analyses on Egyptian tufa deposits helped us to reconstruct the „Greening periods” in the Sahara, a crucial question in connection with human migration out of Africa. Studies on fault-related veins and travertine fissure ridges from Italy and Turkey emphasized the significance of geochemistry of these deposits in fluid-rock interaction, tectonic activity, palaeoseismicity. The PI participated in the universal clumped isotope calibration project, and the resulted calibration will be used by future clumped isotope-based papers. Clumped isotope study of recently forming carbonates revealed that pH-related effects are mostly small for D47 in the sub-surface environment at low pH and that high mineral growth rates control the magnitude of this disequilibrium.
