A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

folyamatok. Tőzsdei áruk egy fontos csoportja (bizonyos nyersanyagok illetve "biztonságosnak" tartott befektetések) azonban az átlaguk körüli fluktuációt ("mean-reversion") mutatnak, amit
legjobban stacionárious folyamatokkal lehet leírni (melyek szórása állandó).

A ``Fragility of arbitrage and bubbles in local martingale diffusion models'' című cikkünkben
(P. Guasoni, M. Rásonyi, Finance and Stochastics, April 2015) az arbitrázs, a pénzügyi buborékok
illetve a piaci súrlódás szorosan összefüggő témáit boncolgattuk.
E cikkben a fentebb említett martingál típusúak modellekre összpontosítottunk.

A jelen kutatási programban ki szeretnénk terjeszteni ezen vizsgálatainkat olyan modellekre,
ahol az árak stacionárius folyamatok. Az arbitrázst hosszú távú, aszimptotikus értelemben
vesszük és a piaci súrlódásokkal való kapcsolatát fogjuk részletesen elemezni.

Vizsgálatainkban fontos szerepet játszanak új határeloszlás tételek, nagy eltérés
típusú becslések illetve a szotchasztikus folyamatok kockázat-érzékeny optimális irányítása.

Vizsgálatainkban fontos szerepet játszanak új határeloszlás tételek, nagy eltérés típusú
becslések illetve a szotchasztikus folyamatok kockázat-érzékeny optimális irányítása.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.

Arbitrázs (azaz kockázat nélküli haszon) nem létezik jól működő piacon.
Mégis, hosszú távon a tapasztalatok szerint a legtöbb pénzügyi modellben léteznek
arbitrázslehetőségek bizonyos aszimptotikus értelemben.
Többféle arbitrázsfogalmat tekinthetünk, mi főleg a befektetők hasznossági függvényein alapuló megközelítést választjuk.

a befektetési döntésekhez információt nyújtanak.
Korábbi vizsgálatok arra mutatnak, hogy a kockázat-érzékeny optimális irányítás elmélete
a megfelelő keret, amiben ilyen problémák tárgyalhatóak.

A stacionárius folyamatok egyik fő jellemzője a kovarianciastruktúrájuk.
kölcsönhatása a piaci súrlódásokkal ? Azaz az aszimptotikus profit nagyságának függését akarjuk vizsgálni a kovarianciáktól és a tranzakciós/likviditási költségek nagyságától.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A pénzügyi matematika elmélete eddig elhanyagolta a stacionárius árfolyamatú értékpapírokat.
A kockázatkezelés, illetve a származékos termékek árazásának módszerei kizárólag martingál
típusú modellekre készültek, ezért időszerű kidolgozni a "biztonságos" befektetésekhez szükséges
matematikai eszközöket is.

bizonyos "keresztezéseire" is.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Ezeket a tényezőket együttesen piaci súrlódásoknak nevezzük.

Elemzéseink célja a mögöttes matematikai törvényszerűségek feltárása.
Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

Most stock prices behave roughly like a martingale (e.g. a random
walk): price changes accummulate in such a way that the dispersion of the price
grows as time goes on. In particular, these are non-stationary processes.
Prices of an important class of assets (commodities and certain ``safe''
assets), however, show a mean-reverting behaviour and are best described by
stationary processes (with constant dispersion).

The publication ``Fragility of arbitrage and bubbles in local martingale diffusion models''
by P. Guasoni and M. Rasonyi (Finance and Stochastics, April 2015) investigated the closely
related issues of arbitrage, bubbles and market frictions (such as transaction
costs or liquidity costs). That paper concentrated on the above mentioned martingale-type models.

Our purpose in the present project is to extend these investigations to models with stationary
price processes. Arbitrage is meant in a long-term, asymptotic sense and its relationship
with the presence of market friction is analysed in detail.

Important roles are played by new limit theorems, by large deviation estimates and by
techniques from risk-sensitive optimal control.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

Arbitrage (riskless profit) is not present in efficient markets. However, experience shows
that, in the long term, most models produce arbitrage in a certain, asymptotic sense (e.g. stocks
outperform the riskless asset in the long run). Various formulations
of arbitrage are possible, we will mostly treat the utility-based one.

How fast is this asymptotic arbitrage produced? What is the size of the available profit? The
answers to these questions characterize the ``investment profile'' of the given market and
inform investment decisions. Previous investigations show that
the setting of risk-sensitive optimal control is appropriate for such problems.

A main feature of stationary processes is their covariance structure which is crucial in determining how efficiently profit can be obtained in the given market environment. How does the covariance (and the degree of mean reversion) interact with market friction?
That is, we study the sensitivity of asymptotic profits to covariances
and to the level of transaction/liquidity costs.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

Our project concerns safe assets whose prices are described by stationary processes. These
include commodities like oil but also gold and certain types of bonds. These latter instruments are
fundamental in the portfolios of both individuals and funds. People's savings are
thus affected by the degree of understanding one has about these financial models.

So far, the theory of financial mathematics has neglected assets with a stationary price process.
The known techniques of risk management and derivative pricing all assume martingale-type models
hence working out mathematical tools for safe assets is a timely enterprise.

The current project is a logical continuation of our on-going research with international partners and it is well-aligned with current trends of financial mathematics as it contributes to the risk
management of assets that are traded in large quantities but whose specificities have not been
been adequately treated so far.

As a piece of fundamental research, the limit theorems and large deviation estimates we plan to
prove accommodate a larger class of models, including certain hybrids of Markovian and
Gaussian (but not Markovian) processes.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

In financial markets, assets' prices heavily depend on the current supply and demand as well as on
various fees and taxes. These factors are together called market frictions.

We will study the profitability of certain long-term investments. We concentrate on assets that are considered to be "safe", such as gold or certain bonds but our results will also be applicable to various commodities (oil, metal).

A common feature of the above mentioned assets is that their prices show a mean-reverting behaviour: though they make excursions up and down, they eventually stay close to their "rational" price which stays constant over time.

The interplay between the effects of mean reversion and friction is what determines the actual
quality of the given investment opportunity. Our analysis aims at revealing the mathematical
rules behind.

Más pénzügyi termékek (pl. részvények) olyan folyamatokat követnek, melyeknek a növekményei stacionáriusak. Stacionárius folyamatokra épülő pénzügyi modelleket vizsgáltunk különböző szempontokból: - Konkrét kapcsolatot találtunk a stacionárius folyamatok memóriája (azaz hogy a múlt mennyire befolyásolja a jelent) és a befektetések lehetséges növekedési rátája között. - Adatokon alapuló kereskedési stratégiák teljesítményét tanulmányoztuk. - Új eredményeket értünk el optimális befektetésekről nagy piacokon (ahol sok termékkel kereskednek) illetve modellbizonytalanság esetén.
Results in English
Stationarity of a random process means that time shifts do not alter the statistical properties of the process. Such processes can describe a system in equilibrium. In financial models, prices of certain commodities (e.g. gold) can be modelled by stationary processes. Other classes of financial assets (e.g. stocks) follow processes whose increments are stationary. We investigated various aspects of financial models involving stationary processes: - An explicit relationship between the memory of the stationary process (i.e. how past events influence the present) and the realizable growth rate of investments has been found. - The performance of data-based trading schemes in stationary markets has been studied. - New results has been obtained for optimal investments in large markets (with many assets) and under model uncertainty.
