A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Hasonlóan jelentős lehetne a hozzájárulásuk a kora keresztény istentisztelet megismeréséhez is.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

Papyri from Egypt have had a unique potential to nuance our understanding of several important aspects of the history of early Christianity, including the formation of the biblical Canon, the emergence of orthodoxy, or the beginnings of monasticism. They have an equal, but yet unexplored potential to enrich our knowledge of early Christian worship practices. Over thirty papyri from the third to fifth centuries are known with texts of worship in ancient Greek, which are remarkable in variety and in beauty. However, papyri, which come to us often fragmented, written in difficult-to-read hands and in non-regular language, require a thorough philological work before they can be accessed as a source of early Christianity. They are in need of a precise transcription, a translation, and a detailed commentary, which ensures a reliable reconstruction and interpretation in light of the intellectual and theological currents of the day. While for other papyri witnessing early Christianity in Egypt such editions have been made available, the editions of prayers are often outdated and lack a translation and a commentary. The aim of this project is to bring together the earliest prayers preserved on papyrus in one volume in order to make them accessible to researchers from various fields by providing them with a reliable transcription, an English translation and ample commentary. Besides the print publication, a digital publication of the texts and the translations in the open access on-line database litpap.info is also foreseen. My research will furthermore make a collection of select prayers from the treasure trove of early Christian piety known to the Hungarian public.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

How did the old church pray? What prayers do the earliest manuscripts preserve us? Who wrote and used these manuscripts? On which communal and private occasions were these texts recited? How did they connect to the intellectual and theological trends of the period? And how did liturgical, private, and ‘magical’ prayers relate to each other? The papyri preserving early Christian prayers in ancient Greek, which are the earliest manuscripts of prayers that have survived to our time, offer a unique opportunity to answer these questions. Their study requires an interdisciplinary approach, the different disciplines disclosing different aspects of the papyri. A meticulous philological work on the papyri can bring back to light the text themselves, restore their beauty, and make them accessible in translation. A digital humanities approach contributes to making them even more widely accessible and searchable in an on-line database. The papyrological study of the manuscripts themselves and the perspective of New Philology help me infer the culture of the scribes and the users of these papyri and places them back in their original social context. Comparative liturgical research allows me to fathom the liturgical occasions on which these prayers were recited. The input of theology and history of religions is needed in order to position these texts in the intellectual and theological trends of the period in a detailed commentary to the texts. Finally, a historical perspective will allow me to discuss the relationship between „liturgical” and „magical” prayer on the basis of these texts.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

Early Christian papyri have been widely known and influential in the study of the history of the early Church. Several groups of them have recently received corpora, which make them accessible to a more general scholarly public, including biblical amulets (e.g. Jones 2015) or the entire documentation of the early congregation in the town of Oxyrhynchus (Blumell and Wayment 2015). However, papyri with prayers lack such a corpus and have escaped attention. As a consequence, only a few items continue to be cited in studies of early Christian worship, while other similarly interesting items lie neglected in outdated editions. Recent studies that have drawn on early Christian prayers on papyrus as a source material (Maravela 2014 and Avdokhin 2016) failed to notice several relevant texts and misinterpreted others. These studies indicate the potential in the early prayers on papyrus, but also highlight the need for a good edition, which this project aims at supplying. The project will also increase accessibility by entering these texts in an on-line database. The existence of a good edition is expected to draw the attention of scholars from various fields (history, theology, history of religions) to this hitherto neglected source material. The inquiries into the social context of the production of the manuscripts and into the relationship between magical and liturgical prayers will bring in a new angle into ongoing debates on early Christian trends, based on a new group of evidence. The dissemination plan ensures that these intriguing and alluring early Christian compositions will reach to broader segments of society.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

Some of the most beautiful and intriguing prayers written by Christians in the fourth century can be recovered from the papyri preserved in the dry sand of Egypt. Written in ancient Greek, the official language of the Egyptian church at that time, they have since then fallen out of use and forgotten by later generations of Christians. They testify how ordinary members of the church in the Egyptian countryside addressed God in the morning, in the Eucharist, or in moments of distress, in the third to fifth centuries. The researcher who wishes to bring these prayerful voices back to light faces the time-consuming and arduous task of reading the cursive handwriting of these papyri, which have suffered loss from wear and worms during their over one and a half millennium in the sand. For a better understanding of these texts, their place within the worship occasions also needs to be understood. Moreover, the external features of the manuscript, such as care in writing or preparation, tells the expert a lot about who produced and used the manuscripts, the expressions that surface in the texts highlight the intellectual and theological currents of the day. As a result of this complex research, the scientific community will be presented with a volume with the Greek text, English translation and commentary of these early texts preserved on papyrus, while the Hungarian public will benefit from a book with the Hungarian translation of a selection of the most beautiful early Christian prayers.

Final report

Results in Hungarian
Posztdoktori projektem öt hónapja alatt a munkatervben foglaltaknak megfelelően átnéztem a 4-5. századi liturgikus, privát, és mágikus imák kiadásait, és kiválasztottam közülük 18 darabot a tervezett korpusz számára. Ezek közül egynek, a P.Berol.
Results in English
During the five months of my postdoctoral project I reviewed, according to the work plan, the editions of all liturgical, private and magical prayers preserved on papyrus from the fourth and fifth centuries, of which I selected 18 for reedition in the planned corpus. I prepared the reedition and translation of one, P.Berol. 17202, a liturgical exorcism included in a magical formulary. Moreover, I examined the relationship between Christian magical and liturgical texts, exploring the different ways in which the cult of saints and angels are reflected in the two groups of texts, and the cultural background of these divergences. I also participated at a webinar organized by the University of Heidelberg, where I learned the skills necessary for entering my digital editions of the papyri in litpap.info.
