A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Ez utóbbiak a kutatásvezető (Tomohiro Ogawával, a pályázat nemzetközi együttműködő partnerével közös) eredményei, a hipotézisvizsgálatról szóló cikk a pályázat alapjául szolgáló közlemény.

A projekt célja ezen kutatási irány folytatása, további kvantum-információelméleti problémák optimális exponenseinek meghatározása, valamint különböző kvantum divergenciák matematikai tulajdonságainak és információelméleti alkalmazásainak a vizsgálata.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.

A projekt célja explicit kifejezéseket adni különböző kvantum-információelméleti problémákat meghatározó, egymással versengő mennyiségek közötti "trade-off" leírására, és ezen kifejezéseket összekapcsolni kvantum állapotokra vonatkozó mértékeivel az információnak, korrelációnak, és kvantum állapotok különbözőségének. Ezek az összefüggések egyrészt az adott problémák mélyebb elvi megértését nyújtják, másrészt segítenek kiválasztani a gyakorlati szempontból lényeges definícióit olyan alapmennyiségeknek, mint például a Rényi feltételes entrópia, kölcsönös információ, vagy a feltételes kölcsönös információ. A projekten belül a következő fő kutatási irányokkal tervezünk foglalkozni:
- Kvantum forráskódolás hibaexponensének meghatározása, klasszikus-kvantum csatornakódolás erős konverz exponensének meghatározása konstans kompozíciójú kódokra.
- Kettőnél több versengő mennyiséggel meghatározott problémák "trade-off" relációinak vizsgálata (kvantum állapotmegosztás, többfelhasználós klasszikus-kvantum csatornakódolás).
- Kvantum összefonódottság vizsgálata állapotok egymásba konvertálhatóságának hibexeponensein keresztül, illetve monoton metrikák, valamint a kvantum Fisher-információ és általánosított varianciák segítségével.
- Kvantum-információelméleti módszerek alkalmazása a kvantum statisztikus fizikában és kvantum termodinamikában. Statisztikus fizikában releváns korrelált rácsállapotok megkülönböztetése hibaexponensének meghatározása, összekapcsolása az állapotok kritikusságával.
- Kvantum-információelméleti problémák és a kapcsolódó kvantum divergenciák matematikai vizsgálata végtelen dimenziós rendszerekben (Neumann-algebrákon).

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

Magyarországon nemrég indult a 3.5 millárd forint össztámogatású négy éves Nemzeti Kvantumtechnológiai Program, amelynek keretében különböző kutatócsoportok dolgoznak a kvantumtechnológiai kihívásokon és ezek fizikai hátterén.

A pályázatban javasolt projekt szervesen kapcsolódik ezekhez az erőfeszítésekhez a matematika oldaláról, olyan problémák megoldását tűzve ki célul, amelyek jelenleg a nemzetközi kvantum Shannon-elméleti kutatások előterében vannak – ahogy az jól látszik a pályázat alapjául szolgáló kiváló közleményre érkezett kiemelkedő számú hivatkozásból is. A projekt egyedülálló erősségekkel rendelkezik ezen a területen, mivel összefogja a kvantum-információelmélet matematikai kérdésein dolgozó magyarországi vezető fiatal kutatók többségét, a területen nemzetközileg vezető szerepet játszó kutatásvezető irányítása alatt, és ezen túl további támogatást kap a vezető kutató két rendkívül sikeres, folyamatban lévő nemzetközi együttműködéséből is. Mindezek a projektben kitűzött célok megvalósulásának nagy esélyét garantálják.

A kvantum-információelmélet várható, a projekt időtartamán jóval túlmutató relevanciájának fényében fontos a tudományos utánpótlásképzés, amire nagy hangsúlyt helyezünk a projektben.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

Most problems in (quantum) information theory are described by a set of competing quantities (like the compression rate and the decompression error in source coding). The aim of the mathematical analysis of these problems is to find optimal relations among these quantities (coding theorems). These give bounds on the possible values of relevant quantities of the problem with the values of other relevant quantities fixed. In general, these relations can be expressed in closed form in the asymptotic analysis, among the exponents of the relevant quantities, typically in terms of some quantum divergence (measure of dissimilarity of quantum states). An important role is played in such investigations by the purely mathematical analysis of quantum divergences, usually with the methods of matrix analysis and functional analysis.

Research in this direction gained considerable momentum recently due to the introduction of a new type of Rényi divergences in 2013, which proved to be the right tool to obtain strong converse results. Exact strong converse exponents have since been determined for a number of problems, most prominently for quantum state discrimination and classical-quantum channel coding, due to the joint work of the PI with Tomohiro Ogawa, who is an international collaboration partner in the proposal. Their paper on state discrimination forms the basis of this proposal.

The aim of the present proposal is to continue this research in the direction of determining error exponents of further quantum information theoretic problems, together with the mathematical study of quantum divergences and their applications in quantum information theory.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The aim of the project is to give explicit expressions for the trade-off among the relevant quantities determining various quantum information theoretic problems, and connect these to measures of information, correlation, and dissimilarity of quantum states. Apart from their obvious theoretical importance of obtaining a more detailed understanding of these protocols, such exact trade-off quantifications would help to select the operationally relevant versions from among the many possible formal definitions of such fundamental quantities as the Rényi conditional entropy, mutual information, conditional mutual information, and others.

In the project we plan to investigate the following main problems:
- Error exponents for quantum source coding, strong converse exponent for classical-quantum channel coding with constant compositions.
- Trade-off relations for problems with more than two competing quantities (quantum state redistribution, multi-user classical-quantum channels).
- Study of quantum entanglement via the exponents of interconvertibility of quantum states, and with the help of monotone metrics, quantum Fisher information and generalized variances.
- Applications of quantum information theoretic methods in quantum statistical mechanics and quantum thermodynamics. State discrimination for correlated lattice states relevant in physics, exploration of the connection of the exponents to criticality.
- Quantum information theoretic problems and the analysis of the related divergences in infinite-dimensional systems and von Neumann algebras.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

Quantum information science is one of the most rapidly progressing research fields of our day, with the potential to revolutionize information technology in the near future. Concentrated effort to realize this potential is exhibited on all levels of research funding, including large-scale European projects like QuantEra, and, most prominently, the European flagship project in quantum technologies, with a funding of 1 billion euros. On the national level, various governmental research agencies are setting it as a priority research area. In Hungary, the four-year National Quantum Technology Program, with a total budget of more than 12 million euros, has just been launched, with various research groups addressing the challenges of quantum information science from the physics and the technology side.

The proposed project complements these efforts from the mathematics side, addressing fundamental questions that are at the forefront of international research in quantum Shannon theory. (This is clearly demonstrated, among others, by the outstanding number of citations attracted by the paper on which this proposal is based). The project has a unique strength in this area, as it unites most of the leading Hungarian young researchers working on mathematical aspects of quantum information theory, led by the PI, Milán Mosonyi, who is an internationally leading researcher in the core topic of the proposal, and it is further supported by two very successful ongoing international collaborations of the PI, with Tomohiro Ogawa and Fumio Hiai. All these resources guarantee a very high feasibility of the project goals.

In the view of the expected future relevance of quantum information theory well beyond the duration of the project, we also put a great emphasis on training the future generation of Hungarian quantum information scientists in the framework of the project.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

The scientific worldview was revolutionized at the beginning of the 20 century by the recognition that physical systems of
microscopic size cannot be described by the laws of physics suitable for the everyday world. The predictions of the new
physical theory, quantum mechanics, led to such technological inventions as the laser or semi-conductors, without which
modern computers and modern technology would not be possible. It has been a more and more widespread view in recent years that the predictions of quantum mechanics may lead to a new technological revolution, as the result of which new methods of the storage, transmission, and manipulation of information of unprecedented efficiency may become possible, leading to such technological applications as unconditionally secure cryptography or quantum computers that would outperform any computers of current technology. However, to realize this vision, there are still numerous highly non-trivial problems to solve both on the technology side and in the deeper theoretical understanding of the possibilities offered and the limitations posed by quantum theory. In this project we address mathematical problems originating from quantum information theory, and we aim at answering questions like the optimal compressibility of the information stored in quantum systems, or the theoretical limits of the efficiency of the information transmission via communication channels described by quantum mechanics.

Results in Hungarian
A kvantum-információelméleti projektben elért fő eredményeink a következők: - Meghatároztuk két végtelendimenziós kvantum állapot aszimptotikus megkülönböztetési exponensét, valamint ugyanezt általánosabban nukleáris C*-algebrák állapotpárjaira. - Megmutattuk, hogy a klasszikus esettel szemben a kompozit kvantum állapotmegkülönböztetés direkt exponenseire általában szigorú felső korlátot ad a két hipotézist leíró halmazokba eső állapotok legrosszabb páronkénti hibaexponense. - Meghatároztuk a konstans kompozíciójú klasszikus-kvantum csatornakódolás erős konverz exponensét a csatorna súlyozott szendvicselt Rényi-divergencia sugaraival kifejezve.
Results in English
Our main results are in the field of quantum information theory, and include the following: - We have determined the strong converse exponent of the asymptotic discrimination of two infinite-dimensional quantum states, and, more generally, of two states of nuclear C*-algebras. - We have shown that in the case of binary composite quantum state discrimination, the optimal error exponents are generally strictly bounded from above by the optimal pairwise exponents of discriminating single elements of the sets describing the two hypotheses, in contrast with the classical case. - We have expressed the strong converse exponent of constant composition classical-quantum channel coding in terms of the weighted sandwiched Rényi divergence radii of the channel. We also performed a systematic study of weighted divergence radii for other divergences, and used this approach to define a new 2-parameter family of monotone quantum Rényi divergences. - We have applied techniques from algebraic complexity theory to finding optimal rates of multi-party entanglement conversion, and to giving the trade-off between the error exponent and the rate for work-assisted Gibbs-preserving operations in quantum thermodynamics. - We have developed new measures of entanglement and ways to detect it using uncertainty relations and the Fisher information. We have also explored the use of entangled states in quantum metrology. - We have developed new protocols for near-term quantum computers.
