A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A TESS a következő két évben a teljes égbolt 86 %-án található összes, elegendően fényes csillagról legalább 4 hét hosszúságú, ultraprecíz fotometriai pontosságú, folyamatos adatsort fog készíteni.
- Ezen felül a hosszabb ideig észlelt kettősök esetében közeli harmadik komponenseket fogunk keresni ETV-módszerrel.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

- Milyen okok állhatnak a rendellenesen lassú apszismozgást mutató kettőscsillagok viselkedésének a hátterében?

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

Az apszismozgást mutató, excentrikus kettősökkel kapcsolatos kutatási résztémák egyrészt a csillagok belső szerkezetére, illetve árapálydisszipációs mechanizmusaira vonatkozóan nyújthatnak újabb eredményeket, másrészt segíthetnek tisztázni a rendellenesen lassú apszismozgású rendszerekkel kapcsolatos, több évtizedes nyitott kérdéseket.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The decade-long activity of the Kepler space telescope led not only to the discovery of thousands of exoplanets, but also enable the study of new classes of astrophysical objects, like e. g., gravitationally interacting, close, hierarchical triple stellar systems, as well as triples showing extra eclipses. Kepler's legacy is now continued by the new TESS space telescope with a slightly different strategy. In the following two years TESS is planned to cover 86% of the whole sky, by staring continuosly at every single area for at least 4 weeks, and gathering ultraprecise, time-resolved photometric measurements of all the stars with sufficient brightness in the surveyed area. This rises the number of observed targets by orders of magnitude as compared to Kepler, though at the price of shorter time series. Our aim is to apply our complex photodynamic analysis package, developed specifically for the study of systems observed by Kepler, on the new targets that will be observed by TESS. We plan to perform the following analyses:
- comprehensive study of the numerous multiply eclipsing stellar systems that are likely to be discovered by TESS;
- for the already known eclipsing binaries we will combine TESS's new measurements with the already existing data in order to determine astrophysical and orbital parameters with high precision, identify long-term trends in their orbital behaviour, use them to directly track evolutionary phenomena, and search for a solution, among others, to the problem of systems with anomalously low apsidal motion;
- search for close third components by the method of Eclipse Timing Variations (ETVs) for systems having sufficiently long-term observations.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The continuously increasing sample of hierarchical triple systems with known configuration
(in which our previous efforts have played a leading role) suggests that the usually adopted scenery, according to which all close binary systems have evolved dynamically from hierarchical triple systems with high relative inclination, needs some refinement. There are signs that hierarchical triple systems form at least two well-separated subgroups of spatial configuration, suggesting the existence of two different formation scenarios. In light of the above, we search answers to the following questions:
- Which formation theories of close binary systems comply with the observed frequency of hierarchical triple systems and the observed distribution of their physical and orbital parameters?
- The Kepler sample of contact binary systems revealed that they typically have no third companions with orbital periods shorter than 1/2 year; would this finding remaing valid also for the upcoming larger sample of TESS? (If yes, that would have serious implications on the current contact binary formation theories.)
Related to TESS's measurements of previously known eclipsing stellar systems:
- What constraints will their analysis pose on the tidal dissipation theories, and thus, indirectly, on the internal structure of stars?
- What possible causes could stand behind the anomalously slow apsidal motion observed in some binary systems?

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

According to our expectations, our study will at least double the number of triple stellar systems with known dynamical and orbital parameters (including full spatial configurations).
(We mention here that the current sample that we are planning to extend is based largely on our previous NKFIH research project, concluding shortly in 2018, and especially on the excellent paper included in it, describing the analytic model constructed by the PI for the computation of short time perturbations of such systems, as well as the related software package for its application on real systems. This software is still unique in its field, and grants us a clear advantage over other national and international scientific competitors in the field of ETV-based dynamical and orbital parameter fitting.)
For the subgroup of triple systems with triple eclipses, we will be able to determine the astrophysically most relevant stellar parameters (mass, radius, temperature) with high precision, thus increasing the sample of such parameters useful for the testing of formation theories of such systems, and, furthermore, providing key data for the understanding of the formation of extraneous, old triple systems with components close to the final stages of stellar evolution (primarily triples containing degenerate stars).
Our studies of the apsidal motion in binaries with eccentric orbits will provide new insight partly into the internal structure of the stars and the tidal dissipation mechanisms in these systems, and can also help in resolving the decades-old problem of anomalously low apsidal motion in some systems.
Although the exploratory nature of this study makes it hard to assess its potential societal usefulness, its use of state of the art scientific tools and its direct connection to internationally bleeding edge researches contributes significantly to the international recognition and embedding of the hungarian astronomical -- and, indirectly, the whole scienticic -- community.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

Like its predecessor, the Kepler spacecraft, the new TESS space telescope will measure brightness variations of stars with ultrahigh precision. Its main goal is the discovery of thousands of extrasolar planets and planetary systems. In the following two years, TESS will scan 86% of the whole sky, therefore it is highly expectable that, in addition of exoplanets, it will uncover many other secrets of the stars. The goal of the present research proposal is the extension and improvement of our knowledge on binary and multiple stellar systems using TESS's measurements. These systems are important because their study allows the determination of many physical properties of the stars with the highest possible precision. They help us in understanding the processes leading to the development of Type Ia supernovae which, among others, play a key role in cosmological investigations. The analysis of the data also allows us to recognize any eventual third component present in an eclipsing binary system through its gravitational perturbation exercised on the visible stars and in some cases even by its eclipses acted upon them. These rare triples may disclose even more secrets of the birth and death of stars and their physical affairs than plain binaries. Our aim is a better understanding of the behaviour and brightness changes of such triple stars. For this purpose we employ analysis methods that we have developed in the frame of a previous NKFI-founded project, the international recognition of which cannot be expressed better than mentioning the fact that the paper presenting the first applications of our methods has joined the Five Percent Club for top-cited scientific publications.

-- Korábbi fotodinamikai programcsomagunkat továbbfejlesztettük úgy, hogy jelenleg, világviszonylatban egyedülálló módon, már akár hat csillag alkotta, többszörös fedésű rendszerek fotometriai, spektoszkópiai és dinamikai viselkedését is képes egyidejűleg modellezni, amelyhez a csillagok evolúciós állapotát és eredő spektrális energiaeloszlását is figyelembe veszi. -- E kód használatával a TESS űrtávcső által felfedezett, legösszetettebb fénygörbéjű többes csillagrendszerek közül négy kompakt hierarchikus hármas csillag (köztük két triplán fedő rendszer), és három duplán fedő négyes rendszer teljeskörő spektro-fotometriai, dinamikai analízisét végeztük el, és határoztuk meg nagyon nagy pontossággal ezek dinamikai, illetve az azokat alkotó csillagok asztrofizikai paramétereit, szigorú megkötéseket szolgáltatván íly módon a csillagkeletkezési, illetve csillagfejlődési elméletek számára. -- Felfedeztük a legelső három fedési kettőscsillag alkotta gravitációsan kötött hatos csillagrendszert, és elvégeztük ennek analízisét is. -- Elvégeztük a Naprendszerhez legközelebbi csillag, a Proxima Centauri fler-tevékenységének vizsgálatát, és ebből következtetéseket vontunk le a csillag lakhatási zónájában keringő bolygó fizikai viszonyaira. -- Tanulmányoztuk a WASP-18Ab naprendszeren kívüli bolygó hosszú távú dinamikai viselkedését, és kimutattuk a pályaellipszisnek az árapály-kölcsönhatás okozta körbeforgását. Ez alapján meghatárouztuk a bolygó Love számát.

-- We improved continuously our previously developed photodynamical software package Lightcurvefactory. This cutting edge code is now able to handle dynamical, photometric and spectroscopic behaviour of multiple stellar systems up to six constituent stars producing multiple eclipses. The investigation of the cumulative spectral energy distribution of the stars and the consideration of their evolutionary phases are implemented, too. -- With the use of this package we carried out joint, complex analyses of four hierarchical triple stars (some of them exhibit outer eclipses, too) and, three doubly eclipsing hierarchical quadruples obtaining dynamical and astrophysical parameters of the investigated systems and stars with a very high accuracy of less than 1%. Such accurate results can be used to constrain the different theories of stellar formation and evolution. -- We discovered and studied the very first hierarchical sextuple stellar system which constitutes three, gravitationally bound eclipsing binaries. -- We studied the flare-activity of Proxima Centauri (the nearest star to our Solar System), and investigated the hability properties of its known planet. -- We studied the long-term dynamical behaviour of etrasolar planet WASP-18Ab and detected tidally forced apsidal motion in the system. From this fact we determined the Love-number of this hot Jupiter. (This quantity is known only for a few exoplantes.)
