Summary in Hungarian
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The main purpose of this projest is the investigation of the asymmetry between the forward and reverse phase transformation of shape memory alloys with acoustic emission measurements. The measurements will carried out with continous signal recording in order to investigate the properties of the noise events in frequency domain. Using these properties, with the adaptive sequential k-means clustering method, the determination of the active noise sources during the transformation is possible, and we will able to find the physical differences between the two directions.
In the second part I will investigate the ductile-brittle transition of steels. Using similar methods, I will investigate, that how the properties of the acoustic emission during the scratching of the surface will change with changing the temperature. I will looking for a specific temperature, where crossing this temperature, the source of the noise emission changes, and I will comapre this temperature with the ductile-brittle transition temperature.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The first fundamental question is that can the asymmetry of the martensitic transformation explained with the differend active noise sources in the two directions, and if yes, how these sources influence the sign of the asymmetry.
In the secon part, the question is that is it possible to measure the ductile-brittle transition temperature with noise measurement methods (as precisely as the Charpy impact test can).

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

The asymmetry of the martensitic transformation of shape memory alloys highly influences the behaviour of the devices made from these materials, therefore understanding the asymmetry is essential. Shape memory alloys represent an important group of functional materials, and they will have countless present and future applications. Nonetheless, the question of the asymmetry became important just in the last years. The clustering method is also new, and it has more and more applications.
In case of measuring the ductile-brittle transition temperature with Charpy impact test, it is a huge problem to produce enough samples from the actual metal structure. Using noise measurement methods I will lay down the physical principles of a new method, which determines the ductile-brittle transition temperature, in a (semi) non-destructive way.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

The aim of the first part of this project is to understand the behaviour of the shape memory alloys, a group of functional materials. Knowing the properties of these materials are essential in order to improve the number of innovative applications, like medical or aerospace applications. The second purpose of the project is to lay down the physical principles of a new, fast, and economical method for qualifying steel structures.

Final report

A projekt során különböző fémek, illetve fémötvözetek szerkezeti átalakulásait tanulmányoztam akusztikus emisszió mérésével. A vizsgált minták többsége alakemlékező ötvözet volt, melyek egyik részénél az ausztenit és martenzit fázis közti átalakulást, másik részénél a martenzit fázis ikerhatárjainak szakaszos mozgását tanulmányoztam. Sor került még ón képlékeny deformációjának vizsgálatára is, különböző hőmérsékleteken. Az akusztikus emisszió rendkívül érzékeny technika, ezáltal sok esetben olyan zajesemények is rögzítésre kerülnek, amelyek nem a mintából, hanem esetlegesen a környezetből származnak, illetve a vizsgált mintából jövő impulzusok is származhatnak különböző fizikai jelenségektől, amiket a pontosabb eredmények érdekében célszerű külön-külön vizsgálni. Az egy mérés során érzékelt, de különböző forrásból származó jelek szétválogatását adaptív klaszteranalízissel végeztem, ezáltal értékes, új információkat kaptam a vizsgált minták viselkedéséről.
Results in English
During the project, I studied the structural transformations of various metals and metal alloys using acoustic emission measurements. The majority of the examined samples were shape memory alloys, where I investigated the transformation between the austenite and martensite phases in one part, and the intermittent motion of martensite phase twin boundaries in another part. I also conducted investigations on the plastic deformation of tin at different temperatures. Acoustic emission is an extremely sensitive technique, which means that in many cases, noise events are recorded that do not originate from the sample but possibly from the surrounding environment. Furthermore, the impulses coming from the examined sample can also arise from various physical phenomena, which should be separately examined for more accurate results. I performed the separation of signals detected during a measurement but coming from different sources using adaptive cluster analysis, thus obtaining valuable new information about the behavior of the examined samples.
