Summary in Hungarian
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A projekt célja a hálóelmélet és esetleg néhány ahhoz kapcsolódó terület gazdagítása új eredményekkel, és ezen eredmények publikálása nemzetközileg elismert matematikai folyóiratokban. Az eddigi publikációk tanúsága szerint a projekt a legtöbb témája kellőképpen érdekli a kutatókat és a témavezető (a projekt egyetlen tagja) szakértő ezen területeken.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.

A kutatás féligmoduláris hálókra, azok kongruenciahálóira, planáris hálókra, konvex geometriára, kevés elemmel generált hálókra, forgási ("rotational") hálókra, hálók főkongruenciáira és általános algebrák kompatibilis kvázirendezéseinek és más relációinak hálóira koncentrál; továbbá bármely olyan kapcsolódó témára is, amelyik természetesen merülhet fel de itt nincs felsorolva.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

"( MSC Primary=(06C10)) AND pubyear in [2010 2019]" Matches: 45,
"( Author=(czedli) AND MSC Primary=(06C10)) AND pubyear in [2010 2019]" Matches: 20.
"( MSC Primary=(06C10)) AND pubyear in [2000 2009]" Matches: 20.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

A hálók absztrakt algebrai struktúrák. Amennyiben érdeklődő hallgatók jelentkeznek a jövőben, akkor a projekt eredményei a doktori képzésben lesznek hasznosíthatók.
Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The goal of the project is to enrich lattice theory and, possibly, some related topics with new results, to be published in mathematical journals of international recognition. Publications witness that most of the topics included in the project enjoy sufficient current research interest and that the principal investigator (that is, the only participant of the project) has expertise with them.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The research focuses on semimodular lattices, their congruence lattices, planar lattices, convex geometry, lattices generated by few elements, rotational lattices, principal congruences of lattices, lattices of compatible quasiorders and other relations of algebras, and also on any related problem and topic that might naturally arise but not listed here.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

Lattice theory is a theoretical branch of mathematics and so are the related topics the project aims at. No direct societal application of the results of the project is expected. However, the results might be exploited in PhD training. Similar research is carried out by about a dozen of lattice theorists in several countries; mostly occasionally but intensively and permanently by my coauthor, George Grätzer; see my biographic paper

Strengths of the project: many of the topics of the project are thriving and match the applicant’s expertise. E.g, 44 % of the publications on “Semimodular lattices, geometric lattices” in the last decade were published or coauthored by G. Czédli; this is shown by the MathSciNet searches
"( MSC Primary=(06C10)) AND pubyear in [2010 2019]" Matches: 45
and
"( Author=(czedli) AND MSC Primary=(06C10)) AND pubyear in [2010 2019]" Matches: 20.
Current prosperity is clear by comparing the searches above to
"( MSC Primary=(06C10)) AND pubyear in [2000 2009]" Matches: 20.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

Lattice theory is a part of modern algebra with close links to geometry and combinatorics and with significant overlapping with the theory of general algebras. Lattices are abstract algebraic structures; the finite ones of small size can be visualized by diagrams expressing some hierarchy among the elements. Lattices often occur as structures related to other mathematical structures. Lattice theory as a separate field in algebra came to existence in the nineteen-thirties; this was due to Garrett Birkhoff’s work. Lattice theory soon attracted famous mathematicians like John von Neumann. The goal of the project is to enrich lattice theory and, possibly, some related topics with new results, to be published in international mathematical journals. If interested students come in the future, the results of the project can be exploited in PhD training.

Final report

Results in Hungarian
Kongruenciáik a számelméleti "modulo n" általánosításai.
Results in English
Lattices are algebraic structures based on orderings; their operations are taking infima and suprema. Their congruences generalize the number theoretic "modulo n". SPS lattices are special planar lattices in connection with geometries; they were introduced by G. Grätzer and E. Knapp in 2007. Using these lattices in 2011, G. Czédli and E.T. Schmidt improved a group theoretic theorem from the 19th century. The project has resulted in numerous new theorems on the properties of SPS lattices and their congruences, and we have proved a connection with finite model theory. Partitions and quasiorders of an n-element finite set also form lattices: Part(n) and Quo(n). It was known for many n that they can be built from four elements, i.e, they are 4-generated. For 24 new values of n, we have proved that Quo(n) is generated by a subset {a,b,c,d} such that c<d. For many m,n,k, we have proved that Part(n)*Part(m) and Part(n)^k are 4-generated. E.g., if k=10^89 (ten to the 89), then the direct power Part(100)^k is 4-generated. We have shown that Part(n) has many 4-element generating sets and this fact could be used in cryptography. The results are contained in 16 research papers. 11 of them (in 255 pages) has been appeared in international mathematical journals. The rest five are freely and irrevocably available; they are waiting for referees' reviews.
