In our endeavors to explore the impacts of modern climate change, we primarily focused on the phenomena of teleconnections (bridging the low latitudes with the high latitudes) and climate-driven laboratory experiments. Our findings uncovered common characteristics across a variety of processes ranging from the impact of large-scale upper tropospheric winds on global sea-level rise and Arctic sea ice sensitivity to the significant reconfiguration of continents and ocean currents 34 million years ago, which instigated the glaciation of Antarctica. We also identified key features of climate extremes in a changing climate, particularly in relation to the predictability of these extremes and their time evolution. We consider it a major result having demonstrated that if the Southern Ocean and the entire Southern Hemisphere had been ice-free before Drake Passage opening, we would have had global warming instead of the observed cooling. This result underlines the role of ice-albedo feedback and CO2 in driving the southern hemisphere cooling. All this is experimental and numerical evidence that Antarctic glaciation, at least in part, started before the Drake Passage opened.
