A kutatás eredményeit összefoglaló szerkesztett, 475 oldalas kötet – 22 szerző közös munkája –, az ősmaradványokban gazdag bakonyi felső jura–alsó kréta formációk részletes és sokoldalú értékelését nyújtja. A monográfia első fele a vizsgált 18 szelvényt, azok integrált rétegtanát, tágabb földtani környezetét, valamint a terület medencefejlődését ismerteti. A könyv második fele főként őslénytani vonatkozású leíró fejezeteket tartalmaz. A bakonyi jura/kréta határszelvények vizsgálata hozzájárul a berriasi bázisának kijelöléséhez, így végső soron a globális földtani időskála utolsó hiányzó rendszerhatárának – a kréta időszak bázisának – kijelöléséhez is.

The result of the project - an edited monograph -, summarizes our current knowledge on the fossiliferous Upper Jurassic–Lower Cretaceous formations of the Bakony through the work of 22 authors from seven countries. The first part of the volume is about the geology and stratigraphy of the studied 18 sections, and the second part comprises the palaeontological descriptions of the main fossil groups studied, including radiolarians, calpionellids, ostracods, corals, bivalves, gastropods, ammonites, belemnites, brachiopods, crinoids, and fish. Our aim was to give a comprehensive picture of the large fossil material which was piled up by our predecessors over the last 150 years, and which remained largely untouched in museums and storehouses. Studies of the macro- and microfauna and the nannofossils, provided a basis for a revised, high-resolution biostratigraphic framework. Biostratigraphic data were integrated with outcrop-scale structural geological observations, magnetostratigraphic results, and geochemical analysis, including stable isotope and elemental geochemistry, leading to a comprehensive model of the Jurassic to Cretaceous paleoenvironment and sedimentary basin evolution of the region. Since the base of the Cretaceous still lacks the Golden Spike, i.e. the formal designation of the Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP), our results may contribute also towards the definition of the last missing system boundary of the global geochronological table.
