The research has verified the hypothesis that based on the knowledge of the population dynamic effects of the biochemical processes in activated sludge wastewater treatment through the adequate bioreactor configuration such kind of environmental conditions can be provided for the microorganisms carrying out the biodegradation of pollutants that assure the dominance of the favored bacteria or processes. It has been pointed out that the high dissolved oxygen level occurring in the un-staged, open denitrification reactor kinetically inhibits denitrification, whereas in the staged reactor oxygen dissolution barely effects the elimination of nitrate when carbon supply is marginal. Through studying the operation of a plant treating winery wastewater it has been proven that Glycogen Accumulating Organisms (GAO) can be implemented for tolerating N- and/or P-deficiency, since these microorganisms are capable of accumulating excess carbon within their cells. The competition of GAO and Polyphosphate Accumulating Organisms (PAO) – both of which can be enriched in an anaerobic/aerobic bioreactor configuration – was investigated in a continuously operated, pilot-scale experiment and in a full-scale system. It has been shown that low orthophosphate levels may occur in the activated sludge basins due to chemical (Ferric chloride) dosing used for supplementing biological phosphorus removal. As a consequence, the proliferation of GAOs is encouraged and the performance of biological phosphorus removal is deteriorated at the same time.
