Az OTKA támogatásával elkészült és megjelent Debreceni cívis szótár régi adós¬ságot törlesztő, forrásfeltáró regionális tájszótár, hiányt pótló alapkutatás. Közel 30.000 címszót és mintegy 100.000 jelentést, nagy mennyiségű frazémát, szólást, közmondást és értékes néprajzi anyagot tartalmaz. A benne közölt népnyelvi és néprajzi anyag a rohamosan átalakuló, eltűnő népi kultúra pótolhatatlan emléke. A szótár új kutatási és összehasonlítási tevékenységre ad lehetőséget a magyar és a nemzetközi dialektológiai kutatások számára, de hasznos anyagot nyújt a néprajztudomány, a művelődéstörténet kutatóinak is.

With the financial support of OTKA (National Foundation for Research) at the University of Debrecen a special „civic” dictionary has been compiled and published: the Debrecen „Cívis” Dictionary. „Cívises” were well-to-do peasants living in town in Eastern Hungary, mostly in Debrecen. The compilation of this regional dialectical dictionary (as the result of a basic research work uncovering special source-material) and its publication supplies a long felt need. The dictionary contains approximately 30.000 headwords, about 100.000 semantic variants, a large quantity of phrasemes, idiomatic expressions, proverbs, and a colourful ethnographical materail of great value. The dialectical and ethnographical material published in the dictionary is an irreplaceable relic of a rapidly changing and already being in the process of disappearing people’s culture. For the researchers of Hungarian and international dialectology the new dictionary provides an opportunity to make a comparison between different dialects, and it can be instrumental for ethnographers and historians of civilisation in their research work as well.
