Final report

Results in Hungarian
A kocsányos tölgy (Quercus robur L.) értékes, kötelezően színesen gesztesedő fafaj. A színes „gyűrű” elhalványul a levegővel érintkezve. A galluszsav színreakciója alapján a fahiba kimutatható.
Results in English
Pedunculate oak is an obligatory colored heartwood forming wood species. Its heartwood defect, emerging more and more frequently in living stems is the so called ring-like discoloration, which causes substantial economic loss. Heartwood formation takes place in the transition-zone bordering heartwood and sapwood tissues under distinct chemical conditions, leading to the decrease of pH, increase of the totalphenol concentration in the inner part of the transition zone, change of the concentration of the carbohydrates, etc. From among the phenolic-acids gallic-acid and its derivatives are charecteristic to the oak heartwood. These compounds are also present in large amounts in the heartwood of pedunculate oak. Regarding the concentrations of flavonoids significant tendencies could not be established in heartwood tissues. Oxydoreductase enzymes could not also be detected in the heartwood. Significant differences could be established between the ring-like-discolored and healthy heartwood tissues regarding the soluble carbohydrate, totalphenol and gallic-acid content. The discolored rings fade as they contact with air. The colorful heartwood defect may however be visualized by developing appropriate staining reagents basing on the indication of gallic-acid.
