Summary in Hungarian
Fotonok hatására a nanométer skálán bekövetkező elektronátviteli folyamatokat kívánunk vizsgálni néhány anyagcsoport esetében.

A röntgenfoszforok közül perspektívikusak a halogéncirkonát üvegek, melyekben a báriumhalid nanokristályos zárványok jobb megismerése szükséges a tárolt röntgenképek felbontásának növelése céljából. Másrészt a Li2B4O7:Cu detektoranyag egykristályos és üvegváltozatait fogjuk előállítani a Cu környezetének jellemzésére és a funkció optimalizálására.

Még fontosabbak a porfirinek fényindukált töltésváltozásai. Előkísérleteink szerint a sejtmembránt modellező liposzómák a specifikusan beépülő porfirinek révén maguk is elektronszerkezet változáson mennek keresztül, mely funkciójukat befolyásolja. E folyamatok spinjelzéses technikával nyomon követhetőek, és a gyógyszer + lokális fényhatás elvén működő un. fotodinamikus terápia kiindulási pontjának tekinthetők.

A kutatásokhoz hazai preparatív bázis és nemzetközi együttműködő partnerek is rendelkezésre állnak.
Summary
Photon-induced electron transport on the nanometer scale will be investigated for selected groups of materials. In all cases the planned basic investigation methods are EPR, optical absorption and luminescence spectroscopy.

The first group of materials are LiNbO3 and similar photorefractive oxide crystals. The aim is to prepare new shallow electron traps by doping and composition control and to characterise their interactions with photons, in particular for predicting phenomena during hologram recording, fixing and readout.

Among X-ray phosphors and detectors halogen-zirconate glasses have prospective applications requiring a deeper understanding of their nanocrystalline barium halide inclusions for improved resolution of the stored X-ray images. Li2B4O7:Cu is a detector material where single crystal and glassy phases will be investigated for characterising the Cu incorporation and optimising the material’s detector capabilities.

Photoinduced charge changes of porphyrins are even more important. Liposomes which are model systems for cell membranes also undergo similar changes of electron structure due to specifically incorporated porphyrins influencing their functioning as proven by our pilot experiments. These processes can be traced by spin labelling techniques and are a starting point for ‘photodynamic therapy’ based on the drug + local illumination principle.

The planned research is based on domestic preparative bases and international partners for cooperation.

A LiNbO3-ban besugárzással keltett elektron- és lyukpolaronok optikai abszorpciós járulékait tranziensek mérésével elkülönítettük, lehetővé téve a kvantitatív tervezést periodikusan polarizált integrált optikai eszközökben is.

Photorefractíve oxide crystals: In LiNbO3 and K3Li2Nb5O15 characterization methods for holographic and nonlinear optical applications have been developed to monitor composition, Nb’s on Li site, and some important dopants. Measuring transients of the optical absorption in LiNbO3 the contributions of radiation induced electron and hole-polarons could be separated offering a quantitative starting point for planning even periodically poled integrated optical devices. In doped Tb3Ga5O12 garnet the photorefractive behaviour has been shown to be due to Tb4+ - Tb3+ charge-transfers. Scintillators: Due to its excellent light yield BaBr2:Ce3+ has been shown to be a promising replacement for presently commercialized BaFBr:Eu2+ X-ray storage phosphors as it may provide better resolution if produced as inclusions of a glass ceramic. The incorporation, charge states and optical transitions of Cu and Ag activators in the neutron-detector and tissue-equivalent thermoluminescent dosimeter material lithium tetraborate (Li2B4O7) and infrared vibrations of OH- ions in scheelite-type molibdates and tungstates have been characterized. Porphyrin+membrane systems: Photosensitive porphyrin derivatives applicable in photodynamic therapy have been introduced into phospholipid membranes used as models of walls of pathological cells. Incorporation and factors optimizing the destructive effect of light were characterized using spin labelling techniques.
