- A Schumann-rezonanciák, villámokból eredő EM jelek „globális hőmérőként” szolgálnak.
- A légköri elektromos potenciál több évtized óta csökken.
- Az ionoszférában és sztratosztférában hőmérsékletváltozásokat észlelnek.
- A Nemzetközi Űridőjárás és -Éghajlat project keretében a földközeli térséget és annak földi hatásait vizsgálják.
- A geomágneses tevékenység, mint a napszélparaméterek indikátora hosszútávon nő.
- A geomágneses főtér csökkenése a közelmúltban nagy figyelmet keltett.
- Az EM geofizikai kutatások jelzik a földkéreg elektromos paramétereinek, vele a földrengésekben felszabaduló tektonikai feszültségek változását is.
- Az EM terek jelzik a talajnedvesség változása miatti felszínközeli ellenállásváltozást.
A project célja ezeknek a vizsgálatoknak a folytatása, hosszútávú EM változások és ezen jelenségek közötti kapcsolatok keresése. A kutatás a nagycenki és tihanyi obszervatórium geomágneses, légköri elektromos és ionoszféra adatain, terepi méréseken és nemzetközi együttműködésen alapul.
Summary
Research in the framework of the OTKA Post-graduate Center „Geoelectromagnetism” led to detection of connections between EM variations and global-regional environmental changes. Certain EM variations may influence climate and weather, and indicate changes in the Earth’s interior, too.
Some examples:
Schumann-resonances, EM signals from lightnings serve as „global thermometers”.
Atmospheric electric potential has decreased since decades.
In the troposphere and stratosphere, temperature changes have been observed.
International Space Weather and Climate projects were initiated to study variations in near-Earth space and their terrestrial effects.
Geomagnetic activity as indicator of solar wind parameters has a long-term increase.
Decrease of the geomagnetic main field led to public interest.
Geophysical EM exploration methods indicate changes in EM parameters of the Earth’s crust, thus increase subsequent release of tectonic stresses in earthquakes.
EM fields detect electric resistivity changes in near-surface levels due to soil humidity changes.
The aim of the project is to continue these investigations, to look for long-term trends in EM fields and interconnections between these phenomena. The research is based on data of the Nagycenk and Tihany observatories (geomagnetic, atmospheric electric, ionospheric data), on experimental field measurements, and on international cooperation.

Final report

Keresték a földrengések elektromágneses előfutárait. Jelentősen bővültek a villámtevékenységből eredő Schumann rezonanciára valamint elektromágneses tranziensekre vonatkozó ismeretek. Az ionoszférabeli elektronsűrűség esetében jelentős tengerpart-hatás mutatkozott. Az altalaj ellenállásában a globális éghajlatváltozás hatását keresve a beszivárgó csapadékvíz okozta ellenállás változásra sikerült példát találni. Folytatódott a tektonikai hatásra kialakult gyenge zónák elektromágneses kutatása.
Results in English
Activity in the present field includes the development of the instrumentation of the Nagycenk Geophysical Observatory (geomagnetic measuring systems, ionosonde), moreover other instrumental and methodological developments, too. Observatory data are available in a database. Based on result of the Nagycenk and Tihany observatories and on data of permanent and temporal networks, long-term trends of different electromagnetic parameters were investigated. Thus geomagnetic activity was found secularly increasing, a decrease of the atmospheric electric potential gradient and a 11-year modulation of the winter/December attenuation of the geomagnetic pulsation activity were confirmed. Several possibilities (pulsations, whistlers, modelling) were used to improve knowledge about structure and parameters of the magnetosphere. Electromagnetic precursors of earthquakes were searched. A significant increase of understanding was obtained in connection with Schumann resonances and electromagnetic transients caused by lightening. It was shown that see-coasts influence characteristically changes in ionospheric electron content. When looking for the effect of the global climate changes in the subsurface electric resistivity, an example was discovered for the decrease of the resistivity due to infiltrating water from precipitation. Electromagnetic exploration of tectonically conditioned weak zones was continued, too.
