Summary
In the recent years there has been a wide-spreading research activity developed in the field of production, analysis and physical applications of attosecond (10-18 s) pulses. The key element in the generation of such extremely short pulses is that the respone functions (the number of emitted electrons, intensity of the scattered radiation) of the laser illuminated target (metal surface) may have very wide energy spectra due to the nonlinear interaction. This leads at the same time to a high degree of temporal localization of the induced signals. Our group has already long been dealing with both the theoretical and experimental research of the basic processes induced by high-intensity laser fields on metal surfaces (above threshold ionization (ATI), generation of anomalously high energy (keV) fotoelectrons, higher harmonics (HHG) and generation of high energy (x-ray) radiation in the presence of a static electric field, the first theoretical prediction of attosecond pulses). In order to reach our goals in the present project we carry out further theoretical and experimental investigations of the above-mentioned nonlinear processes on the basis of newer viewpoints appeared in the meantime. In the study of ATI electron wave packets and HHG radiation of attosecond structure we take into account the intermediate excitations at the surface, the surface plasmons and the role of the absolute phases of the inducing few-cycle laser pulses. These subjects are very closely connected to a part of the extensive research activity on attophysics headed by Prof. Dr. F. Krausz ( Abteilung Attosekunden- und Hochfeldphysik, Max-Planck-Institut für Quantenoptik, Garching, Deutschland ), hence a more regular cooperation on a larger scale is desirable.

Final report

Results in Hungarian
A kutatási tervvel összhangban, a Max Planck Kvantumoptikai Intézettel való együttműködésnek köszönhetően felépítettünk Budapesten egy egyedi, 200 nJ-os, 40 fs-os impulzusokat adó Ti:zafír oszcillátort.
Results in English
According to the research plan, based on the collaboration with the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics we built a unique Ti:sapphire oscillator delivering 200-nJ, 40-fs laser pulses. We also carried out studies related to the ultrafast dynamics of light-matter interactions both in Budapest and in Germany with particular focus on the investigation of the so-called surface plasmon enhanced electron acceleration. These results were partly published during the project and the publication of the 2008 measurement results is under way.
