Summary in Hungarian
A tervezett kutatás egymást részben átfedő, egymással szembenhaladó lézerimpulzusok, atomok mozgásállapotára gyakorolt hatását vizsgálná. Ezután olyan paramétertartományok feltérképezése a cél, melyek lehetővé teszik ezen manipulációs eljárások megvalósítását a Plazmafizikai főosztály lézerlaboratóriumában.
Summary
The planned research aims to investigate the possibilities of manipulating the mechanical state of atoms using pairs of counterpropagating, partially overlapping laser pulses. The first aim is to find new methods to transfer several photon momenta to an atom with a lambda level scheme, using a single pair of partially overlapping laser pulses, without exciting the atom considerably. Next, the effect of spontaneous emission on manipulation schemes using such pulse pairs are to be examined, identifying those which are most resistant to the adverse effects. The following task is to identify parameter ranges where these effects can be realized in the laser laboratory of the plasma physics department. Finally, the prospects of using these manipulation schemes for atom-laser applications are to be examined. The aim here is to extract atoms from some source, (such as a cloud of cold atoms or a Bose-Einstein condensate) and accelarate them uniformly and coherently.

Final report

Results in English
During the course of the project I first investigated the interaction of partially overlapping laser pulses with atoms for the acceleration of an atomic ensemble, or the manipulation of their internal state. I have shown how such manipulation schemes work even if the interaction persists for much longer than the spontaneous lifetime of the atoms. I have also shown that these schemes are very useful when manipulating atoms with complex level structures, i.e. several close lying hyperfine states with rotationally degenerate substates, and the initial state of the atoms is some random mixture of such rotational state sublevels. Furthermore, it is possible to conceive schemes using just two overlapping laser pulses which allow the entanglement of the rotational substates with discrete center-of-mass momentum states. During the second phase of the project I investigated the interaction of a pair of overlapping pulses with rare-earth ions in a host crystal where vibrational motion of the ions is coupled to electronic excitation. I have also considered nonlinear pulse propagation phenomena in an inhomogeneously broadened medium of such ions, e.g. the generation various Raman sidebands.
