Summary in Hungarian
Menczer Béla alig ismert alakja a magyar eszmetörténetnek.
Summary
Bela Menczer is poorly known figure of the Hungarian history of thought. He was a social theorist and philosopher of history, a journalist, publicist, a researcher of the Austo-Hungarian Monarchy, and of Hungary in that, as well as an internationally renowned figure of Catholic Conservatism. He was a member of the radical Galilei Circle in Budapest during the Great War. Later he emigrated to Paris and lived there, as well as in Berlin, and London. He became a conservative during the Second World War, serving in De Gaulle’s army. His Nachlass is stored in the Manuscript Department of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. It includes letters, papers, interviews and his biography. This research aims at cataloguing and recording these texts as well as his published works. A summary paper will analyse his ouevre and life, trying to find his place on the 20th century Hungarian intellectual horizon.

Final report

Results in Hungarian
A kutatás Menczer Béla történész, újságíró munkásságának föltárására, bemutatására, értelmezésére vállalkozott.
Results in English
The research aimed at exploring, exposing and interpreting the oeuvre of the historian-journalist Bela Menczer. Primary source-research and catalogization was necessary. In the Manuscript Section of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences almost the entire legacy is available, with the exception of some of his correspondence. Finding out where some of his letters are now being stored would have been too costly, however, compared to their expected value, so this aim has been deleted. Published and unpublished manuscripts have all been recorded electronically and catalogued both chronologically and thematically. The correspondence and Travel Journals have been not recorded, only browsed through, due to their volume, with the exception of his correspondence with A. Kolnai and the collection of essays selected out from the Journals by himself. This correspondence was scanned and later been typed and electronically stored. We think this is worth publishing. The final paper envisaged at the beginning of this research has been completed. Its title is "The thinking of Bela Menczer and the Hungarian Conservative Tradition." It is forthcoming in the Political Science Review. Some of its findings are included in the summary report attached. We find it reasonable to publish the Kolnai-Menczer correspondence, after some editing, and a selection of essays written by Menczer. The chances for publications need to be and will be explored right after closing this research project.
