Summary
The main goals of the research are to investigate the mantle plumes and their surface manifestations, the effects of the phase transition at the upper and lower mantle boundary, and the effects of geometry on the thermal convection of mantle using numerical modeling techniques. In the framework of the research an automatic plume detection algorithm is going to be developed, which is able to track the evolution of the upwelling and downwelling limbs of the convection cells in real-time. Its application makes it possible to quantify the number of plumes, their size, temperature anomaly, horizontal and vertical velocities, mass- and heat transfer. Thus, the effects of the main factors on the plumes and their surface manifestations such as the Rayleigh-number, viscosity distribution in the mantle, radioactive heat production, adiabatic work, viscous dissipation and the phase transition can be studied in a quantitative way. Such modeling studies contribute to the better understanding of the dynamics of mantle convection. Systematic model investigation in non-Cartesian geometry (in axial cylinder, cylindrical shell and spherical shell) will be done first time in Hungary. The results of modeling will be compared to the surface observations at hot spots and the up-to-date results of mantle tomographic studies. The automatic plume detection algorithm is a new method in the study of mantle plumes, thus the results are worth publishing for the international scientific community.

Results in Hungarian
A kutatás során a földköpenyben zajló termikus konvekciót modelleztük különböző feltételezések mellett. Vizsgáltuk a 660 km-ben található ásványi fázisátalakulás hatását a konvekció dinamikájára.
Results in English
We modelled different aspects of the thermal convection in the Earth’s mantle. We studied the effects of the phase transition at 660 km depth on the dynamics of the convection. We varied the values of the Clapeyron slope and the Rayleigh-number. Depending on them the convection occurs in one or two layers, and there is an intermittent zone, where the phase boundary is semipermeable: it is closed, but it opens periodically allowing the flow of large amount of material. We calculated the frequency of these mantle avalanches, and it agrees well with the frequency of flood basalt activity. Assuming depth- and temperature dependent mantle viscosity and internal heat production a high viscosity stiff lithosphere, a low viscosity asthenosphere, a medium viscosity lower mantle and a low viscosity D” layer develop in the models similarly to the Earth. However, in the models the stiff lithosphere does not take part in the convection. There are many efforts made to solve this problem and construct a model, which explains mantle convection and plate tectonics consistently. When we model only one mantle plume, then the modelled topography, gravity- and geoidanomalies fit well to the observations. We studied the evolution of the high density layer above the core-mantle boundary. Due to the convection above the layer and in the layer itself the layer is diluted with low density material resulting in the reduction of its density, which leads to the dissemination and dissolution of the layer.
