Summary in Hungarian
Az 1990 után bekövetkezett sorsdöntő politikatörténeti fordulat megköveteli és megengedi a 20. századi zenei művelődés és zeneszerzés új szellemű áttekintését. E munka alapvetését célozza jelen pályázat, mely a század gazdag zeneéletének tükröződéseképpen sokrétű feladatot tűz maga elé. A 2000-ben megindult Dohnányi-kutatás eredményeire építve összeállítja a zeneszerző tematikus jegyzékét. Gyűjti a 20. századi magyar zenei emigrációra vonatkozó adalékokat, és tanulmányban feldolgozza azokat. Tanulmányban foglalja össze a 20. század magyar operatörténetét és az 1950 előtti budapesti hangversenyéletet, a zenekritika történetét 1950-ig. Feldolgozza a magyar zenetudomány történetét az intézményes kutatás kezdete előtt. Adatolja a populáris zene főbb műfajait. Legfontosabb feladata tanulmányok készítése a 20. századi magyar műzene nagy alkotóiról (Bartók, Kodály, Dohnányi, Kurtág, Ligeti) és a nemzeti avantgarde egymást követő hullámainak indulásáról (1930-1950 között virágzó nemzedék, 1960 után fellépő nemzedék), és metodika kidolgozása a 20. századi magyar zeneszerzés történetének integrált tárgyalására a mintatanulmányok alapján.
Summary
The fundamental political change after 1990 requires a new survey of the history of 20th century Hungarian composition and music culture, free from the aesthetic dogmas of the previous regime. The basis for such exploration will be laid in the present multiple project which mirrors the richly layered structure of its subject. The thematic catalogue of the works of Ernő Dohnányi will be finished. Data will be collected and a study written on the phenomenon of emigration in 20th century Hungarian music culture. The history of Hungarian opera in the 20th century, concert life before 1950, Hungarian music criticism in the same period will be studied. A bibliography of Hungarian musicology in the first half of the century will be prepared. Genres, production and consumption of popular music in the same period will be studied. The main objective is the preparation of case studies on important personalities and generations of Hungarian art music like Béla Bartók, Zoltán Kodály, Ernő Dohnányi, György Ligeti, György Kurtág, the flourishing of the „second avantgarde” of Hungarian music (1930-1950) and the emergence of the „third avantgarde” around 1960. The elaboration of the methodological approach towards an integrated historiography of Hungarian 20th century composition will be attempted

Final report

Results in Hungarian
A pályázat új nemzedéket vont be a 20. századi magyar zenetörténet kutatásába, kritikai elemzés tárgyává tette a tervezett Magyar Zenetörténet 5. kötetének negyed századdal korábban készült kötettervét, és megalapozta a téma további kutatásának módszereit.
Results in English
The project has launched a new generation of scholars in the research of the history of 20th-century Hungarian music. The 25years old plan for vol. 5. of the History of Hungarian Music was subjected to critical analysis, and a new historiographical approach was elaborated. Important results were achieved mainly in basic research. Archival documents of the era after 1956, for political reasons not accessible before 1990, were collected and studied. A bibliography of Hungarian musicology in the period 1900–1950, listings and collections of musical criticism in several periods of the 20th century were compiled. A computerized database of concert programs in Budapest in the pre-World-War-II period was finalized, and a similar one for the second half of the century initiated. A catalogue of Hungarian emigré musicians was completed. An archive of digitized scores, music recordings and press reviews of works of the Hungarian school of composers in Kolozsvár/Cluj (Romania) was assembled. The repertory of the Hungarian Opera in Kolozsvár/Cluj, a discography of Hungarian opera singers in the early 20th century and of Hungarian jazz between 1947 and 1969 were compiled. In the historiography of musical composition, new chapters were opened on the oeuvre of Zoltán Kodály and Ernő Dohnányi. Works and attitudes of the third Hungarian avantgarde after 1955 were studied, and a collection of studies on Hungarian music and musical life between 1940 and 1956 was prepared for publication.
