Györffy György 1950-ben hatalmas vállalkozásba kezdett. Egy olyan korai magyar történeti-földrajzot kívánt a múltja iránt érdeklődő emberek kezébe adni, amely megyék szerint, alfabetikus rendben haladva, és minden egyes Árpád-kori település összes fennmaradt történeti adatát feldolgozva monumentális kézikönyv-sorozatként áll az olvasók rendelkezésére. Az első kötet (A-Cs) hat év forrásfeltárás, és hét évi megfeszített munka eredményeként 1963-ban jelent meg, és átütő sikert aratott. Vásárlóinak körét nehéz meghatározni, a hagyományos vevők (könyvtárak, egyetemi- és főiskolai oktatók, tanárok és hallgatók) mellett jószerivel minden lokálpatrióta igyekezett a ''GYÖRFFY''-t beszerezni. Történeti munkától szokatlan módon így alig két évtized alatt három kiadást ért meg és ma már, négy elkészült kötet (II-III. kötet 1987., IV. kötet 1998.) tükrében bízvást állítható, hogy Az Árpád-kori Magyarország történeti földrajza a magyar medievisztika határokon innen és túl mindmáig legnagyobb érdeklődéssel kísért vállalkozása lett. Monumentális művét, amelyet 1957-ben még csupán öt, majd később hét kötetre tervezett, Györffy György végül nem tudta befejezni. (A sorozat négy elkészült darabja azonban a középkori Magyar Királyság területének így is közel kétharmadáról - 34 vármegyéről, valamint a Barcaságról, a Kunságról, a Csepel-szigetről és a Fogarasföldről - nyújt biztos történeti fogódzót). Ezért a Történettudományi Intézet vezetése, a munka folytatásával (mindenekelőtt Pozsony megye még Györffy György által elkezdett, de már befejezetlenül maradt feldolgozásával) 2003-tól Nógrády Árpádot bízta meg. A jelen pályázat a soron következő két megye, Sáros és Somogy anyagának feldolgozásához és publikálásra való előkészítéséhez kér négy éves anyagi támogatást.
Summary
In 1950 György Györffy launched a huge enterprise. He intended to offer for people interested in their past a historical geography which, in volumes treating the counties in alphabetical order, would contain all the surviving historical data of each village from the Árpád period, and thus constitute an indispensable handbook for the public. After six years of intensive research and seven years of hard work the first volume (A-Cs) was published in 1963 and proved an immense success. Although the circle of purchasers is hard to establish, it is certain that beside the traditional buyers (libraries, university professors, teachers and students) almost all people interested in the history of their region tried to have their own „Györffy”. Thus, which is unusual in the case of a historical work, it was issued three times in the course of two decades, and now, in view of the four published volumes (II-III 1987, IV. 1998) it can be safely stated that the Historical Geography of Árpád Hungary proved the grandest enterprise of Hungarian medievalists both in Hungary and beyond. The monumental work, however, which was intended originally to comprise five, and later seven volumes, could not be brought to completion by Györffy. (Although the four volumes do cover almost two thirds of medieval Hungary, that is 34 counties, the Barcaság, the Cuman lands, the Csepel Island and Fogarasföld.) Consequently, the Institute of History decided to continue the work, beginning with the material of Pozsony county, left unfinished by Györffy, and charged with its completion Árpád Nógrády. The present application requests financial support for four years in order to arrange the source material of the two next counties, Sáros and Somogy, and prepare its publication.

A program célja Györffy György történeti földrajzi művének folytatása volt Györffy kéziratos adatgyűjtésének felhasználásával. A pályázat első évében a feladatot módosítottuk: Györffy anyaggyűjtéséből csak a jelzetek használtuk fel a munka során. A mű eredeti szerkezetét meghagytuk, de az adattári, a szöveges elbeszélő és a térképes részt jelentősen kibővítettük. A források mindegyikét eredeti szövegből közöltük. Az ezután következő kötetek készítőinek már az általunk kidolgozott új módszert kell követniük. Az így elkészült mű minőségében és mennyiségében felette áll a program beadásakor vállalt feladatnak: a 2000-es évek tudományos és technikai színvonalához méltó módon elkészítettük Sáros és Somogy megye Árpád-kori történeti földrajzát, ahhoz színes térképeket készítettünk. A kutatásra szánt összegeket csökkentettük, a pénzügyi tervet átcsoportosítottuk, így a program pénzügyi támogatásával a művet 2012 folyamán kiadjuk.

The aim of the program was to continue the series of historical geography of Hungary under the Árpáds originally launched by György Györffy, based on his manuscript collection. In the first year of the program the task was modified: from his collection of materials we have only used his references in the course of our work. Whereas the original structure of the work was left untouched, the sections containing the database, the narrative and the maps were considerably enlarged. All of the sources are published directly from the originals. The editors of the subsequent volumes will thus already be obliged to follow the methods we have elaborated here. The work we have thus prepared greatly surpasses in terms of both quantity and quality the task we undertook at the time when the program began: we have prepared in accordance with the technical and scientific requirements of the 2000s the historical geography of the counties of Sáros and Somogy in the Árpád period, and attached to them coloured maps. By a financial restructuring of the program, the work will be published in the course of 2012.
