Summary in Hungarian
Érdekes módon mindezidáig szinte semmilyen adat nem áll rendelkezésre a bR diszperziójára vonatkozóan a közeli infravörös tartományban, ahol a legtöbb ultragyors lézer működik.
Második lépésként a bR nemlineáris törésmutatóját és többfotonos abszorpcióját mérjük meg egyéb fény-indukált nemlineáris optikai jelenségek mellett. Ezáltal elsőként a világon teljessé tesszük a bR fenomenológiai optikai leírását.
Harmadrészt, a periodikus struktúrák különböző felületeken történő létrehozásának területén végzett jelenlegi kutatásainkat kiterjesztjük a komplex plazmon-struktúrák femtoszekundumos lézerekkel történő újszerű keltésére.
Summary
Nowadays ultrafast laser technology has made possible to investigate ultrafast time resolved physical processes as well as nonlinear optical phenomena. Measurement and control of the carrier-envelope phase of few optical cycle laser pulses have opened a route to attoscience and led to new definition of frequency standards.
In this proposal first we intend to measure the time resolved linear dispersion of bacteriorhodopsin (bR), a promising organic material in many areas, with special attention to the first, very fast transition of its photocycle. Curiously enough, almost no dispersion data of bR are available in the near infrared, where most of the ultrafast lasers operate.
Second, among other light induced nonlinear optical phenomena, the nonlinear refractive index and multiphoton absorption of bR are to be measured. Hence, first in the world, the phenomenological optical description of bR is to be completed.
Third, we are extending our recent studies on generation of periodic structures on various surfaces to novel production of complex plasmonic structures with femtosecond lasers. The presence of such complex patterns on metal films results in unique spectral properties and considerable near-field enhancement, which may be beneficial in many application areas.
Fourth, considerable amount of research are also dedicated to generate femtosecond laser pulses in the visible and ultraviolet as well as to develop diagnostical methods for the time resolved dispersion measurements.
The project is to be carried out with the use of the TeWaTi laser system designed and developed by the PI of the current proposal and his team, which is the only TW-class femtosecond laser available in Hungary (http://titan.physx.u-szeged.hu/~tewati).

Az ultrarövid impulzusú, nagy intenzitású lézerek használatára alapuló kutatási projekt a – a kutatási tervnek megfelelően – öt fő tudományos részterület mentén hozott nemzetközi szintű eredményeket. • Kísérletileg igazoltuk a bR fotociklusának a BR->K és BR->I átmenetén alapuló ultragyors optikai kapcsolást.
Results in English
The project based the use of ultrashort and high intensity lasers has delivered scientific results in the frontiers of international researches in five sub-areas. • We have experimentally demonstrated an ultrafast optical switch based on the photocycle transitions BR->K and BR->I of bacteriorhodopsin. This could be one of the bases of the future implementation of a protein-based integrated optical device. • We have carried out a systematic measurement series for the determination of the pressure dependent nonlinear refractive indices of inert gases, which has not been done before. • We have developed a novel lithography method based on colloid sphere monolayers and femtosecond lasers. • A new procedure based on OPCPA and chirp-assisted SFG has been developed generation of energetic ultrashort pulses in the green spectral range. • A new measurement method based on only linear optical elements and processes has been developed for determination of carrier envelope offset phase (CEP drift) of short laser pulses. We have measured first in the world the CEP-drift of picosecond pulses. It is worth noting that the project was delayed by moving the entire laboratory twice during the project lifetime, as well as the fatal breakdown of one of the pump lasers. However, we have published 15 papers in international journals, submitted 2 Hungarian and one international patent applications.
