Summary in Hungarian
A pályázat célja a szegénység társadalmi nemi dimenziójának összehasonlitó tárgyalása az Európai Únió országaiban. Két adatbázist fogunk felhasználni, (SILC 2005, és The Racialization and Feminization of Poverty, 2000) igy a longitudinális összehasonlitás is lehetségessé válik. Idáig egyáltalán nem született tanulmány, amely ilyen tipusú összehasonlitásba bevont volna a Kelet - Európai országokat is. Az adatbázisok elemzése során arra a kérdésre keresünk választ, hogy melyek azok a tényezők, melyek valószinűvé teszik a szegénység feminizációját egy országban, illetve ennek hosszabb távon való fennmaradását.
Summary
The goal of this individual project is to explore the determinants of the variation in the shape and degree of the
gender poverty gap: what macro and micro level factors contribute to the “feminization of poverty”
in the 21st century and how do these combine?

There are two theoretical and methodological innovations this project sets out to achieve.

(1) First, so far only a handful of studies have examined the relationship between gender and
poverty in a comparative context in developed western European countries and only one in post-state socialist
eastern European ones . There are no studies that develop theory based on information from both sets of countries,
even though this may produce more variation and thus more theoretical leverage.

(2) Second, the studies published so far use a very limited definition of poverty
(defined as per capita household income less than 50% of the national median income).
This ignores a number of dimensions where gender inequality in poverty may be visible, such as, for
example, inequalities in access to resources within the household.

Ezen kívül számos más cikk van különböző stádiumokban, melyeket a 2013-as évben tervezünk publikálni nemzetközi folyóiratokban.

It is a well known fact that women are overrepresented among the poor in many but not all countries. The goal of our project was to identify some of the macro level factors which determine the size of the gender poverty gap. In addition, this research was expected to shed light on the social transformation and its varieties across the post-socialist region. Using data from the 2008 wave of EU SILC as well as a macro level dataset we collected from printed and internet sources, we have found that fast paced, FDI led economic growth is associated with a larger gender poverty gap in the 10 pots-socialist EU members states, while generous welfare subsidies especially targeting families reduced women's relative disadvantage. A further case study of Hungary showed that while lengthy parental leave allowances may help women escape poverty, they nevertheless tend to marginalize them in the labor market while, and possible after, on leave. We have written two articles on the basis of the research and both have been submitted to significant international journals. We plan to use the datasets in further research as well.
