Summary in Hungarian
A project célja a hatékony biológiai növényvédelem elméleti, populációdinamikai megalapozásának továbbfejlesztése.
Míg a rövid távú szimulációs eredmények melegházi kultúrákban segítheti a biológiai védekezés stratégiaválasztását, a hosszú távú vizsgálatok a szabad földi termesztés esetén támogathatják a biológiai növényvédelmet. A monitorozás tervezett módszertani fejlesztése is hozzájárulhat a biológiai ágensek optimális alkalmazásához.
Summary
The aim of the project is the development of theoretical, population-dynamical foundations of an efficient biological pest control. To this end we setup and analyse a dynamical model of stage-structured two- and three-species insect population systems (pest-parasitoid and pest-predator systems, pest having both parasitoid and predator) where the different development and interaction rates are temperature-dependent. While short-term simulation results will support the choice of release strategy of agents in greenhouse crops, the study of the long-term behaviour can help the biological pest control in open field crops. The planned development of the monitoring methodology can also contribute to the optimal application of biological agents.

The theoretical results will provide a deeper insight into the dynamic behaviour of multi-species insect population systems. The new model and the simulation results will be tested on laboratory data collected by the collaborating foreign partners. The project joins the theoretical foundation of important applications in pest management, and therefore anticipates not only future applications in the domestic biological pest control, but may also provide a methodological preparation to an applied European consortial project on the optimization of pest management in agriculture, involving producers of biological agents, as well.

Finally we note that, concerning the planned research, no important risk can be foreseen.

Results in English
The most important result of the project research was the setup a new dynamic model for the temperature- and stage-dependent development of multispecies population systems. The mathematical setting of our model, using simulation analysis, makes it possible to answer some important questions of biological pest control. Our model is appropriate, e.g., for the optimization of the release of an insect natural enemy of an insect pest. In the model building, in addition to the temperature-dependent biological parameters of the single species, the functional response describing the interspecific interaction plays a key role. The model is appropriate not only for simulation analysis of the efficiency of agents, but also for the application of optimal control methodology for the most efficient timing of agent releases, and for the consideration of its economic implications. Based on laboratory and greenhouse trials carried out by our Spanish collaborators, our model was fitted to the data of an egg-larval parasitoid and its host, and also validated. We emphasize that this model can be easily adapted to other interacting species involved in biological or integrated pest control with either parasitoid or predator agents. We have also pursued other research lines either thematically or methodologically connected to the main topic, such as construction and analysis of functional responses, introduction of ecological games, monitoring and equilibrium control of population systems.
