A kutatás fő célja, hogy tudományos eszközökkel feltárja a magyar (úgynevezett poszt-szocialista) „új városokban ” és térségeikben az 1990-es évek második felétől kibontakozott területi társadalmi folyamatok jellegzetességeit, a poszt szocialista új városi fejlődéstörténeti adottságok, illetve a polgári átmenet, a modernizáció, a globalizáció meghatározó hatásmechanizmusai szerint.
A kutatás keretében a magyarországi poszt-szocialista új városok esetében kiderülnek a történetileg meghatározott területi társadalmi sajátosságok mai megnyilvánulásai, valamint a globális fejlődés sajátosságaiban szerveződött új területi társadalmi trendek, s mindezek alapján a történeti folyamatokban és a globális átmenetben szerveződő – egyéb város típusoktól eltérő – sajátos városfejlődési modell lehetősége, annak főbb területi és társadalmi sajátosságai.
A kutatás arra a tudományos problémára is választ keres, hogy létrejött-e a magyar városhálózatban egy sajátos, történetileg és a mai folyamatok által kondicionált új típusú városfejlődési modell, amely a mai átalakulások révén integrálódott a nyugat európai új városfejlődési modellekbe.
Summary
The main goal of the research is to explore the spatial, social characteristics of the Hungarian (post-socialist) „new towns” and their areas in the second half of the 1990s, determined by the socialist development mechanism and the transition, modernization and globalization processes.
The research will verify the historically determinated spatial, social factors of theHungarian new towns and the new global spatial, social trends, especially the possibility of a special urban development model, which is integrated into theWestern European new urban development models.

1) Az empirikus vizsgálatok (150 személyes mélyinterjú) és a megalapozó háttérelemzések alapján esettanulmányok készültek: Dunaújváros és térsége, Kazincbarcika és térsége, Baja és térsége, Gyöngyös és térsége címekkel.
2) Nemzetközi konferencia szervezésére került sor 2012. december 13-án. A magyar kutatók mellett két külföldi vendégelőadó részvételére is sor került. Az előadások absztraktjait tartalmazó CD címe: „New towns in Europe and Hungary at the Beginning of the 21st Century. International Conference”
3) Az eredményeket Belgrádban, 2013. május 22-25. között a „Regional Development, Spatial Planning and Strategic Governance” című nemzetközi konferencián is bemutattuk. 1) Based on the empirical research (150 in-depth interviews) and the comparative analysis, case studies were elaborated: Dunaújváros and Surroundings, Kazincbarcika and Surroundings, Baja and Surroundings, Gyöngyös and Surroundings.
2) International conference was organised on 13th December, 2012. Hungarian researchers and foreign lecturers presented the research results. Title of edited abstracts CD: „New Towns in Europe and Hungary at the Beginning of the 21st Century. International Conference”
3) The scientific results were presented at „Regional Development, Spatial Planning and Strategic Governance”International Conference in Belgrade, Serbia (22-25th May, 2013), with two presentations: Szirmai, V.: „Emergence of a New Urban Development Model?
