A kutatás célja a Német Szövetségi Köztársaság és Magyarország kapcsolatrendszerének forrásalapú feltárása, feldolgozása 1949-től 1990-ig. Tervezett alapkutatási jelleggel a levéltári és nyomtatott források legszélesebb körű összegyűjtése és értelmezése, valamint a témakört tárgyaló elemzés létrehozása, kronológiai alapvetéssel. A vizsgálat célja nem csak és nem elsősorban a nyugatnémet-magyar diplomáciatörténet meghatározó eseményeinek, folyamatainak feltárása, hanem a gazdasági, kulturális, tudományos – és meghatározott területeken – a mindennapi, „civil” kapcsolatok kutatása és elemzése a két ország viszonylatában. A hagyományos kapcsolattörténeti megközelítés mellett a kölcsönhatások vizsgálatát is célnak tekintjük. A kutatás eredményeként önálló kötet publikálása tervezett, az NSZK-magyar kapcsolatok történetét feldolgozó monografikus jellegű bevezetővel és kommentált források kiadásával.
Summary
The research is aimed at the resource-based exploration and elaboration of the relations between the Federal Republic of Germany and Hungary from 1949 to 1990. The planned basic research would include the collection and interpretation of archival and printed resources on the widest possible scale and the creation of a scientific analysis on chronological grounds. The objective of the research is not only and not primarily the exploration of the key events and processes of the history of diplomacy between West Germany and Hungary, but the research of economic, cultural, scientific and – in certain areas – everyday „civilian” relationships between the two countries. Beside the traditional approach on the history of bilateral relations we also intend to study the interrelatedness of West Germany and Hungary. As a result of the research we plan to publish a book with a monographic introduction on the history of relations between the Federal Republic of Germany and Hungary including commented resources.

A kutatás célja Magyarország és az NSZK kapcsolatainak forrásalapú feltárása és bemutatása 1949-től 1990-ig. A kéziratban elkészült alapkutatás jellegű dokumentumkötetben 125 iratot közlünk magyar és német levéltárak anyagából, valamint a két ország korabeli sajtójából. A közölt forrásokat a témakört tárgyaló-összefoglaló elemzés vezeti be, a vizsgált időszak átfogó kronológiája zárja le. A monografikus jellegű bevezető kilenc fejezete keretében vizsgáljuk a magyar-nyugatnémet viszony alakulásának legjellegzetesebb vonulatait, a politika-és diplomáciatörténet mellett a gazdasági, kulturális-tudományos és "mindennapi" kapcsolatokat is figyelembe véve.
A bilaterális kapcsolatok a kezdetektől fogva sajátos kettősséget mutattak: a hidegháborús konfrontációval egy időben a kölcsönös előnyökkel járó gazdasági kapcsolatok - időszakos visszaesések mellett - folyamatosan fejlődtek. 1963-ban a kereskedelmi képviseletek kölcsönös megnyitása, 1973-ban a diplomáciai kapcsolatok felvétele által intézményesültek a két ország közötti kapcsolatok, amelyek fellendülést hoztak bilaterális téren. Az ideológiailag problematikus és a "baráti" NDK-ra tekintettel kényes kulturális kapcsolatok viszont csak az 1980-as évek közepétől fejlődtek dinamikusabban. Kutatásaink alapján a Magyarország és az NSZK közötti viszonyban a politikai-ideológiai fordulat 1986/87-ben - tehát még a rendszerváltás előtt - következett be. Ezt a folyamatot az 1989. évi események koronázták meg.

The aim of the research project is to explore the relations between Hungary and the FRG from 1949 until 1990 on the basis of historical sources. In our research volume, which exists in form of a manuscript, we release 125 documents from Hungarian and German archives and from the contemporary press. A synthetic analysis about the subject introduces the released sources and a chronology gives an overview about the research period. Our monographic introduction analyses the most characteristic features of the development of Hungarian–German relations in nine chapters. Besides the political and diplomatic history it takes a view on the economic, cultural, scientific and “everyday” relations, too. The bilateral relations were characterized from the beginnings by a specific dichotomy: parallel to the Cold War confrontation the economic relations, which were favorable for both sides, showed a constant growth. The relations were institutionalized in 1963 by the mutual establishment of commercial representation offices and in 1973 by the establishment of diplomatic relations. The consequences were a boom in the bilateral contacts. The cultural relations, which were ideologically problematic and considering the “friendly minded” GDR delicate, showed dynamic development only since the mid-1980’s. The turn in the political-ideological relations took place in 1986/87, before the transformation of the political system in Hungary. This process reached its highlight with the events of 1989.
