Summary in Hungarian
A globális klímaváltozás következtében tovább nőhet a kedvezőtlen környezeti hatások valószínűsége. Jelen pályázat célja a gazdaságilag jelentős gabonafélék stresszkörülmények között adott válaszreakcióinak jobb megismerése. Régóta ismert, hogy a szalicilsav (SA) jelátvivő molekulaként működik a növények védekező folyamataiban. Ebben a munkában a szalicilsavfüggő védekezési mechanizmusok egyéb jelátviteli utakkal való kapcsolatát tanulmányozzuk kalászos gabonafélékben. A következő lépésekben a különböző SA-szintekkel rendelkező kiválasztott genotípusokat vizsgáljuk.
Summary
The predicted climate change may further increase the possibility of unexpected unfavourable environmental conditions. The aim is to obtain a better understanding of the responses given to various types of stress by cereal species of outstanding economic importance. Salicylic acid (SA) has long been known as a signal molecule in the induction of defence mechanisms in plants. Special attention will be paid to the cross-talk processes between various signalling pathways. In the first step several cereal genotypes will be characterised for their levels of stress tolerance, and correlation between the level of tolerance and the endogenous level of certain signal transducers and/or protective compounds, especially SA, will be determined. These results may provide useful information per se about a few stress-related signalling processes of the cereal genotypes used in breeding programmes. In the next steps selected genotypes with different levels of SA will be used in further experiments aimed at discovering the effect of altered levels of SA on other signal pathways. Changes in the lipid composition and in the quantities of plant hormones (including polyamines) and other protective compounds will also be studied under control and stress conditions. It is expected that the results will enable us to pinpoint processes that could be manipulated either by conventional plant breeding or using biotechnology to achieve more efficient improvements in plant stress tolerance.

Final report

Results in Hungarian
A szintén gabonák közé tartozó rizsben, mely köztudottan magas szalicilsav tartalommal rendelkezik, szintén kimutattuk, hogy a szalicilsav kezdeti szintje nincs közvetlen kapcsolatban a szárazságtoleranciával.
Results in English
It was concluded that salicylic acid has an important role as a protective compound and signalling molecule, and was in significant relationship with several members of the antioxidant system and other protective compounds, such as polyamines and the heavy metal chelating phytochelatins. However, the levels of salicylic acid either initially or under stress conditions, could not explain the degree of tolerance to heavy metal, low temperature, PEG-induced drought stress or powdery mildew infection in the wheat lines investigated. In rice, a crop plants, which can be characterised with a very high level of salicylic acid content, there was no strong correlation between the basal salicylic acid contents and the degree of drought tolerance.
